You need to have patience. I expect an answer from him since the winter. I hope my question will be solved soon

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=497545.0

The instructions given above by Theymos make sense. How can a moderator respond if their inbox is being spammed? I trust you followed instructions and sent one signed message to each. On the other hand I did not realize that you have been waiting 7+ months for a reply. This is insanity.

Do you think that the moderators actually read every private message sent to them? Messages from 7+ months ago? This seems to be an unreasonable task to expect anyone to do. Do you find yourself going through every personal email you have received from 7+ months ago? It would be a very long process.... a process that makes zero sense to undertake for someone who values their time. The expectation that Cyrus and Theymos must spend their time reading months of messages is wrong. At the same time it's clear the process for recovering a hacked account on bitcointalk is best case inefficient, worst case completely broken.

-----BEGIN BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Also roda, I have not seen you once publicly post a signed message proving you own the ETH address 0x634cE633deF89D115A6A6e56317D700F200F219C from your stolen account Radar19. Roda00 can you reply with a signed message here? It's easy to sign a message, can you do this publicly? This is a signed message using a BTC address associated with my stolen bitcointalk account kworrom: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=80785;sa=showPosts;start=940. The date is September 8th, 2018.

In my opinion what drives these account thefts (and forum spam) is the bounty and incentive programs. Roda, why are you so keen on bounty programs? I have a negative opinion about these programs and advertising because my personal account was hacked to be used in these programs! To be honest I don't like that these advertising programs exist, and I think they devalue the forum. It appears the majority of threads are no longer filled with people holding great discussions around cryptocurrency and related services, but instead short meaningless three sentence spam posts in various languages to increase reputation for the purpose of these godforsaken advertising incentives. What it has become is not endearing as it once was... my faith has dwindled in bitcointalk.

UPDATE APRIL 6, 2019:
I was able to reclaim my account successfully today! Thank you!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You did everything as stated in "Recovering hacked accounts or accounts with lost passwords", but your account should be tagged by DT member and banned by mod so hacker can not do more damage to your account. It is quite logical that the account is completely blocked until the moment it is returned to the right owner, in this case to you.

Thanks for making this clear Lucius, I really appreciate it. Since I have already sent a message to Cyrus, Hilariousandco, and Theymos I will try and message other DT members once with a signed message. After a search I found people have created a handy list of all the DT members on the forum: https://pastebin.com/fdruf3Hx I don't want to spam people though, so I guess the first person I'll message is mprep (moderator of the alt-coin bounty section). I will update if anything new happens, cheers.

I notice you did not open your thread and ask someone to verify your address and tag hacker so he can not use your accounts on a way he is using it now. Also mods can ban your account if you prove that you are owner, and signed message is good proof for that.

Lucius, I'm not sure I follow your suggestion. Am I approaching this in the wrong way? What should I do next in your opinion? Here's a timeline of my actions:

1. I read Theymos's stickied post about recovering a hacked/stolen account and followed his instructions.

If you want us to recover a hacked/lost account, you need to prove that you own it. Typically, the only acceptable method of proving ownership is by signing a message (including current date and desired new email address) using a Bitcoin address or PGP key associated with the account. Send one PM to Cyrus. If Cyrus doesn't respond after two weeks, you can try sending a PM to me instead. When sending a PM, use a template...

2. I privately messaged Cyrus once with a signed Bitcoin message using an address I used on the account in the format suggested. It has been two weeks with no reply from Cyrus.

3. I privately messaged the moderator Hilariousandco once with a signed Bitcoin message after he replied to me in a thread. It has been also been two weeks with no reply.
Send me the signed message on my hilariousandco account or post it here and if it checks out I can ban the account. Only admins can restore access to you though so you'll still need to wait for that to happen.

4. I publicly posted about my situation in the same thread responding to hilarious and included a signed Bitcoin message about it.
I've messaged Cyrus and hilariousandco privately. For the public record I will post here as well:

Here is one unedited post where I posted the 189EGkRQHkzPwqrzvaabgAVj696eL6uQeB address:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=90718.msg1517066#msg1517066

Here is the link to my stolen account:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=80785

I look forward to seeing action towards this in a reasonable amount of time. I will also message Theymos in 2 weeks if I don't hear from Cyrus. I understand everyone is busy, and it's a horrible waste of time to deal with account requests, but I don't know what else to do at this point.

5. I privately messaged Theymos once with a signed Bitcoin message using an address I used on the account. Now I'm planning on waiting a reasonable amount of time before a response (months) before posting about it again.

After your reply I also sent a signed message to hillariousandco two weeks ago on August 19th, but didn't hear anything back. I also tried posting publicly for everyone https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4864633.msg44391814#msg44391814. I'm sure the message was buried in your inbox or you had more important things to do. It's fine. I appreciate the gesture. It appears this is a losing battle I'm fighting, but when you get your account stolen and someone creates a telegram account with the sole purpose of impersonating it really strikes a nerve.

Update: It has been over two weeks now and I unfortunately did not receive a response from Cyrus. I will try and message Theymos now with a signed message.

Vyg I am in a similar situation where my account was stolen. After reading similar things from others I am less optimistic than I was starting out, and I know exactly what you're going through. So far I have just messaged Cyrus, and hilariousandco, and in a weeks time will try messaging Theymos.

This is my stolen account on bitcointalk kworrom: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=80785

In the end my best advice is send one signed message with information to Cyrus/hilariousandco/Theymos, and check back every week on the situation for a message from them. If it takes longer than 6 months just move on and consider that they are choosing to ignore your request. This is at least how I am approaching the situation. Hopefully your account is returned to you, or you can find a way to eventually move on to using another account or other forums. At the very least if your account is benefiting from bounty programs like my stolen account is maybe try and contact the bounty providers to get them suspended, or again message hilariousandco to try to ban the account (hilariousandco has not responded to me yet, but said he would look at a message the other day). It is a sad state of affairs, but honestly it's just life... you will take losses and have to move on. This is unfortunately one of those situations it seems.

It's not the ad slots that are the issue. It's paid sig spam, mostly from ICOs who couldn't care less about spam. In fact, more spam is better for them. More posts = more ad impressions. This needs to change

I could not agree more, but what's worse is these campaigns are also now not only rewarding those spamming bitcointalk but also external websites. This causes people to create fake social media accounts or use stolen accounts it appears. I can't believe the people managing ICOs don't realize this... as long as their advertising is spread they are happy even if it is through illegitimate means. Their bounty programs are essentially paying for spam on bitcointalk and externally... this only makes me more skeptical of whatever they are promoting.

Thank you for the offer hilarious. I will message you with a signed message so you can see what my old account is doing. I can sign a message from the first bitcoin address I posted (which I posted multiple times). I also own the original email used to register the account, and still have emails and notifications from private messages that I can attach a screenshot of. I've also used my real first name and can verify who I am. If this is happening with my old account it's bound to be happening with others.

I'm not sure if individual bans versus profiling accounts and collecting data for a mass ban of fraudulent users would be more beneficial. There seems to be a conflict of interest possibly as well with doing this at all. Part of the value of this forum is created by the massive amount of these bounty/ad/affiliate programs. It is prime real estate for businesses to reach those who have/know about cryptocurrency. The people running these ad campaigns would not be happy if a large amount of their campaigners were banned. Again, they must realize a large amount of their campaigners are suspect, but as long as it benefits them they look the other way. This line of thought is completely ignoring whether the ICOs/services/products they advertise are even legitimate in the first place as well. To be completely honest I'm not sure that the problems created by advertising can be ever solved here... or elsewhere for that matter.

Mapuche, I am in the same situation. I just messaged Cyrus a signed bitcoin message from an address used in my account as described by Theymos in https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=497545.0 and if in two weeks he doesn't respond I will message Theymos with a signed bitcoin message to reset my account.

Currently my account is being used by someone abusing bounty programs, and English is not their first language. I'm still in possession of the original email address I registered my account with, and private keys of bitcoin addresses I posted with so I can sign messages. Weirdly the person who hacked my account didn't delete or modify my posts... they are all still there. It's frustrating as it is funny... you can tell they started using my account when it started suddenly linking Russian Twitter and Facebook accounts for reward programs, and speaking Russian. In my case they are also spamming youtube with my bitcointalk profile they hacked, and then they went and made a freaking telegram account with my bitcointalk username likely to scam people. It makes me literally mad. I don't want to post the link in case they will be notified and delete/modify my old forum posts. I wish I could do something, but I am powerless. I know how you feel.

I will update you if Cyrus in 2 weeks or Theymos responds. I am optimistic that they will help us all out if you can sign messages, but they probably are taking on many (too many?) responsibilities at the time. Really this just makes me think poorly of bounty and airdrop programs that are magnets for unsavory people looking to exploit them. It is unreasonable to expect Cyrus/Theymos to dedicate all of their time to resetting peoples accounts, and it seems like something that could be automated to some degree. Imagine what their message inbox looks like... how many messages do you think Cyrus/Theymos receive a day? Thousands? Tens of thousands? There is no way to read all of them and do other productive things. Many productive people avoid email and communication like this because to be frank it is a huge waste of time for little reward. I feel as pissed as you that someone hacked my account, but at the same time expecting Cyrus/Theymos (who are providing their own time for account recovery) to put my account recovery as a priority over other things is unreasonable. There should be an automated system implemented as Theymos suggested he was working on, or there should be a separate moderator who deals with these issues, but there isn't. As painful as it is to watch someone take your personal username and account and abuse it, we have to wait. I have faith that Cyrus/Theymos will help us in the end.
13  Other / Meta / Re: Recovering my hacked account [signed message] on: August 17, 2018, 07:29:14 AM
I feel your pain. I am in the same situation. I also have had my account compromised. I have sent a message to Cyrus as instructed in this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=497545.0 and if he doesn't respond in 2 weeks I will then message Theymos with a signed message using my bitcoin address I posted and still have access to.

My account is being used right now to likely abuse bounty programs... the person who took over the account doesn't seem to use English as a first language, but is rather Eastern European. They did not edit any of my earlier posts oddly, but it's obvious when they started to do this. It is an unfortunate situation. I will follow your thread in hopes that you get your account back, and I will let you know if Cyrus or Theymos respond to me as well. Cheer up, I'm sure they will help eventually.

I really like the idea that Theymos will implement something new to combat this issue. I'm excited to see what he comes up with.

Roda, I know how you feel. My account was compromised as well. My account is now spamming in a different language and assuming another identity. They are ripping off bounty campaigns currently. I have messaged Cyrus as well with a signed message from a bitcoin address I used, but I did not hear anything back yet. I do not want to mention the account here in fear that they might edit the post history as it happened to you. It sucks, but I am sure the admins are busy, and they will get to it eventually. If two weeks pass then I will send the same message to recover my account to theymos as he describes here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=497545.0

I hope things turn out alright for you Roda. Keep your head up you are not the only one in this situation. I'll be following your thread I will let you know if Cyrus replies within 2 weeks or not to me. Good luck!

Make sure you have a complicated password that you don't use elsewhere.
Consider using a unique username that is unrelated to your email and other accounts you own.
Consider changing your password periodically.
Don't reuse your password on other sites.

I know this from personal experience...
My account on bitcointalk was compromised and they changed the email address so I can't reset it! Just yesterday I messaged the admin Cyrus with a signed message from the first bitcoin address I posted on the account. I still haven't heard back from Cyrus, but I hope he sees my message soon. The person who took over my account doesn't seem to speak English as a first language, and even features a different identity now...he's spamming for some bounty campaigns, but he left all my old posts unaltered. Luckily I still own the bitcoin address and private keys posted by my account to sign and verify a message using that. It still sucks though. You don't want this to happen to you. I don't think I even got an email saying my account's email and other things had changed, at least I didn't see it. So again:

Make sure you have a complicated password that you don't use elsewhere.
Consider using a unique username that is unrelated to your email and other accounts you own.
Consider changing your password periodically.
Don't reuse your password on other sites.
