A middleman is a person in the network who connects people to increase the value of that network.

With rapid digitisation, new evolving types of platforms are popping up.

Multi-sided platforms creates value by enabling direct interactions between two (or more) distinct types of affiliated customers.

There is also concept of sharing economy where owners rent out something they are not using, such as a car or house to a stranger using peer-to-peer platforms – “the middleman”.

These platforms exist because there is a need for “the middleman” to match the different sides of the platform in a more efficient and effective way saving transaction cost.



All participating sides are usually charged by “the middleman”.

Personal details are sometimes used or sold by “the middleman”, generating additional income.

“The middleman” platform usually keeps all the income generated without sharing any of the pie.

A system or platform where only one actor takes all the rewards and benefits does not seem fair.

There are countless examples where trust is given to a single actor – “The middleman”.
