3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best Bitcoin Android apps and widgets on: February 17, 2014, 07:39:20 PM
I recommend Bitcoin Checker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobnetic.coinguardian).
It shows prices for all different coins from many different exchanges (Vircurex, Cryptsy, MtGox, BTC-e, Bitstamp, coinmarket.io and much more). It also has an alarm function (e.g. you can set it up to ring when the rate exceeds x $/BTC) and even a TTS (it automatically announces the course all X minutes per text-to-speech-engine. There's also a widget and best of it, you can put the rates you need most permanently in the notification bar.
I think it's a great app, fast, easy and feature-rich.

Seriously? Why? Isn't 42 few enough? And still only 8 decimal places? Unpractical, nothing new and not needed.
Thumbs down.

[...]
If you read the article you linked to you will understand that the NSA approached Linus Torvalds (the inventor of Linux and still one of the developers) to make a backdoor - but he didn't. That's simply because Linus doesn't own Linux - he can't decide on his own what to change. And Linux is open-source and devoloped by a huge load of developers - nobody, not even Linus, can implement a backdoor without anyone noticing.
That's why Linux is safe and will stay so.

They pressured/intimidated him into denying NSA attempts.
He nodded yes.
If they still have the ability to control what he says, how can you be so sure?

Have you personally reviewed ALL Linux kernel source code?
If they can pressure Linus, they can pressure anybody who discovers and attempts to divulge the backdoor in the source.

No, I haven't. But the great thing about Linux and open-source in general is that it's huge - Linux is developed by hundreds of developers all around the world. And not even the NSA has the power to intimidate a developer in Russia (most notably Russia), Switzerland, Norway or elsewhere. It's the same principle that makes Bitcoin so safe - decentralization.

[...]NSA Backdoors have been found on windoze.
Apple products do not seem to be any safer.
Linux is not safe either.
Wrong. Win and Apple are of course backdoored by the NSA and so on, but Linux isn't. If you read the article you linked to you will understand that the NSA approached Linus Torvalds (the inventor of Linux and still one of the developers) to make a backdoor - but he didn't. That's simply because Linus doesn't own Linux - he can't decide on his own what to change. Smartphone Kill Switch Could Become Federal Law

Quote
On Thursday, US Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Mazie Hirono (D-HI) introduced national legislation to require a way to disable smartphones remotely. The goal is to deter theft and protect consumers, but this defense against thieves might come with greater vulnerability to hackers, according to a mobile industry trade group.

WITH CELL PHONE THEFTS SURGING, KLOBUCHAR, MIKULSKI, BLUMENTHAL, HIRONO INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO REQUIRE A “KILL SWITCH” ON SMARTPHONES TO DETER THIEVES, HELP PROTECT CONSUMERS [from themselves.]

The way I see it, this comes from the school of never-let-a-crisis-go-to-waste, in this case, blame thieves who've taken advantage of idiot consumers to advance an agenda.

Make no mistake, next are all internet-connectable devices, the same devices currently used to remit payment freely, i.e. Bitcoin.

That's just...  Shocked I can't find words for this. What's next? Every door of the world should be openable by the government? Every camera should be viewable? "The land of the free"? My ass.

Well, if you think about it... What about implementing a kill-switch into the heads of new-born babies? They could be stolen too! Great idea!
7  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bitcoin Curse? JP Morgan Executive Becomes 5th Banker to Die in Last 2 Weeks on: February 13, 2014, 06:55:17 PM
Two weeks after the suicide of a JP Morgan banker who jumped to his death from the top of a building, another of the firm’s employees has died, with 37-year-old Ryan Henry Crane becoming the 5th banker fatality in just the last few weeks alone.

Crane was an Executive Director in JPM’s Global Program Trading desk based in New York and had been with the firm for 14 years.

Few details have been released concerning the nature of his death, with reports merely stating that Crane is survived by his wife and son.

“We can only hope this disturbing chain of deaths within the financial industry – one of which involved a nail-gun induced suicide – is purely accidental,” writes Zero Hedge

Wait a second. How is that associated with Bitcoin?

No. But it will be unusable until it either gets confirmed or gets retrurned - which can take some time. Next time use a bigger fee.
9  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox SCAM? $38million disappeared. Large sums affected. on: February 11, 2014, 01:33:20 PM
If the Bitcoin Foundation itself called bullshit on MtGox, will they remove it as (Gold) member? Or isn't this possible? (maybe the foundation pledged to keep them as gold member and MtGox donated in return? I don't know)
10  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Best way to buy bitcoin on: February 10, 2014, 06:23:46 PM
[...]In my case localbitcoins only offers coins at 20% rate on bitstamp if I search for a seller from my country. And taking into account the 300km drive to get a better deal in cash,  localbitcoins is a no no.

Well, I didn't know that. For me the cheapest offers are 493.37€ for OKPay and 505.85€ for a SEPA bank transfer. As the current market price according to BitcoinAverage is 495€, these are quite fair prices. And don't forget, if you had some succesful trades and good ratings before, you can start an offer by yourself. This often results in better prices.

It seems like we have some wuite different price situations here. Well, I'm satisfied with LocalBitcoins, so I will keep using it.
11  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Best way to buy bitcoin on: February 10, 2014, 06:06:34 PM
I recommend localbitcoins.com.
It's easy, you don't have to trust a centralized institution to store your coins securely (as Mt.Gox showed, that might backfire) and you don't have to provide them with your ID/proof of residence. They offer an escrow and rating service, so as long as you use it careful, it's safe. Also they work with both € and $, and offer a huge load of payment methods, just choose the one you like most (but not PayPal. It's easily reversible. Many Sellers lost their money by using PayPal). Read the guides on their site for further information.

Well, BitcoinAverage just removed MtGox from their site, which is a nice beginning. We have to get rid of MtGox so it stops pulling the price down.

Somebody seriously panicked there. From 600 to 100 and back in minutes? Wow. That's just dumb.
15  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox SCAM? $38million disappeared. Large sums affected. on: February 08, 2014, 10:06:54 AM
Just looked at BitcoinAverage, MtGox still holds 33% of the BTC/USD and 55% of the BTC/EUR market volume. Either people are really dumb or just trading like crazy because they know they won't see their money back anyway. Hopefully this will be less soon.
16  Economy / Speculation / Re: i put almost all my money and lost a lot on: February 07, 2014, 10:10:07 PM
I agree. As Douglas Adams said in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, DON'T PANIC!
As OP would say, don't do his error!
17  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox SCAM? $38million disappeared. Large sums affected. on: February 06, 2014, 05:27:19 PM
So what exchange do you guys recommend for exchange into euros? According to bitcoinaverage.com MtGox holds 50% of the BTC-EUR market volume... Better use bitcoin.de or kraken? I would use btc-e, but you have to withdraw at least 500€ and the fees are minimum 100€! Somebody have a recommendation?
