1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gmail unusual activity on: June 19, 2011, 09:52:23 PM
There is no salt with the passwords. Seriously, I rented an Amazon high CPU instance and went crackin' away.

These people deserved their accounts to be hacked, seriously.

Lol  Smiley
You should do that on your GPU farm Wink

Apparently cracked in 3 mins with a gpu.
So, MtGox does not us salt... It's really bad. The only good thing they can do is to reset all passwords and revalidate accounts through emails. But in case of passwords that match email ones situation becomes even worse...
4  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How I'd like it to work (Bitcoin face-to-face) feel free to steal idea on: June 19, 2011, 07:56:22 PM
I don`t see much sense in making my wallet public. IMHO, this system would be useful only in form when Point of Sale generates temporary bitcoin account just like MTGox does now. But in such case bluetooth is not appropriate (in public places it's use may be misleading), QR code should be used instead. As far as I know, Bitcoin e-shop API already exists, so QR code generation and transaction processing (on Point of Sale side) is not to hard to implement. Also, mobile bitcoin java client exists (written bysomebode from Google), as far as free QR codes processing libraries. I think, we will see prototype implementation in few months. On the other hand, current market instability prevents further bitcoin adoption  Sad
5  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Fake time atack on Bitcoin difficulty adjustment system - possible or not? on: June 18, 2011, 11:00:36 PM
Thanks for answers. Have one more question.
The constraint isn't 2 hours since the last block, it's two hours ahead of the the current network time, not the last block time.
How does system deal with local time? e.g. +2 GMT and -4 GMT.

At the moment I'm configuring system according to guide for SDK 2.4 on fresh Ubuntu Server 11.04.
Few notes:

7  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Fake time atack on Bitcoin difficulty adjustment system - possible or not? on: June 17, 2011, 11:51:42 AM
Hi all. Bitcoin is a very interesting phenomenon we have never seen before (or I have missed out some historical spirals Smiley ), so it`s the first thing of that kind and may be vulnerable to unpredicted attack concepts. One of them is given below:

Can anybody explain what will happen after such scenario:
- Computer A is mining BTCs
- It has it's system clock adjusted, said, five hours ahead.
- Suddenly this computer generates the 2016'th block on the current difficulty.
- The new block is signed (including generation time && new difficulty) and published to other peers.

Will the new difficulty smaller than it should be? Or Bitcoin system has some mechanism to handle this case?

I've studied project wiki, original article and other sources and did not find any answer.

If such atack is possible, attacker may adjust system time to +1 day, + 2 week and so on, dropping new difficulty in such way.

The probability of such situation is not so low as may seem, because most miners don't like difficulty jumps. So, this people are likely to install hacked bitcoin miners, which will generate blocks with wrong timestamps and thus lower difficulty. But in this case Bitcoin system may be destroyed...

Hi. I have a month experience in bitcoin mining and five years of IT studies/practics. I need out of there because I would like to discuss some possible security issues in Bitcoin software.

You may try disabling Aero, unused system services etc...
10  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: mybitcoin.com is down on: June 15, 2011, 04:52:04 PM
I just managed to get two bitcoins sent to my wallet at mybitcoin last night and I was expecting to check on them this morning. If the site never comes back up am I just SOL on those two coins lost in transaction?
probably, yes. Transactions are net reversible. But you may try contact site owner directly, if possible.
11  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Too late to start mining? on: June 15, 2011, 04:40:36 PM
@xonar

The base speed with the flags of -v -w 128 on my 5870m is 140 base clock 700mhz memclock 1000 leaving the memclock the same as it makes no difference on this particular card even lowering all the way to 300 base temp is about 90c .

when i run i overclock to 810 temp hovers around between 100-102c and Mhash goes between 163 and 166

incidentally when i play games such as bad company or vietnam temps hit about 105 and i tend to play for a long time or used to before this whole mining thing Smiley
Isn`t 100+ temp too high? As far as I know temperatures above 95 Clsius are strongly not recommended  Undecided

13  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: overclock HD 6850 beyond 850 MHz on: June 15, 2011, 04:36:38 PM
the limit of the 6850 is 244 mh/s

I think 1050 is too much.

Try to get the lowest value which will get you 244
Have you had a water pump it wouldn't be a great problem Wink IMHO
