1  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: investment advice? on: March 04, 2023, 11:09:42 AM
I am a new member of bitcoin forum. Investing in Bitcoin can either be profitable or a loss. I will invest in Bitcoin. I don't know where to invest. Should I put it in Trust Wallet or Binance? Hoping for advice from everyone on where it should be placed? There will be no possibility of hacking. please help and advice?

I think what people are saying is... don't put anything on Binance you are not willing to lose.
Not just because Binance can get hacked , or pull a Mt.Gox / FTX...
but ( in regards to using leverage ) using any leverage over 5x can quickly get you liquidated.

Getting a hardware wallet, buying some Bitcoin, and leaving it on that wallet is a good idea ( hodl )
also, engrave your seed word on a piece of steel and hide it

Personally, I love the idea of a passphrase, but it seems like others are leary of it because if you forget it, your Bitcoin is irretrievable.
2  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Can time stamp be manipulated? on: March 04, 2023, 11:02:15 AM
it is theoretically possible for a miner to manipulate the timestamp in the block header before mining the block, but doing so would require them to solve a computationally difficult proof-of-work algorithm. In addition, if a miner were to manipulate the timestamp, the block would likely be rejected by the network because other nodes would detect the inconsistency between the timestamp and the actual time when the block was mined. Therefore, it is very unlikely for a miner to manipulate the timestamp in a block header.
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I started accepting Bitcoin at my store in September 2021, here's an update. on: March 04, 2023, 04:44:09 AM
Hello all, I wanted to give an update about my hardware store.

I started accepting Bitcoin payments in september 2021 and it has been a very nice journey learning about this wonderful invention. I recently invested in a ColdCard mk4 to keep my funds safe (using it fully airgapped). It really made me understand how Bitcoin works, I learnt that cryptography is literally what holds Bitcoin together, which I find awesome.

I've built up a pretty nice amount of Bitcoin over time and I have never spent any of it (except when purchasing my coldcard). I know for a fact that one day Bitcoin will be worth so much more, cryptography is the future. I'll HODL until the day I die.

It's pretty nice too because customers who know about and pay with Bitcoin at my store tend to come back when they need to purchase something and pay with Bitcoin.

So yeah, this was my little update, thanks for listening to my ramble Cheesy, I'm out.

can you post a link to the store?
4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: zomg lightning netowrk payment is fast as heck on: March 04, 2023, 04:40:52 AM
Yeah LN is pretty sick. I haven't used it myself but I've watched videos of people using it and they hit the button and literally a second later (or less) the other person has received the money.

As a network protocol its got some tradeoffs and still seems to need work and improvements that will hopefully hide some of those tradeoffs, but in terms of being able to send cheap and instant payments with Bitcoin its pretty amazing.

Bitcoin base chain is great for storing wealth and moving money around and buying things on the internet, but LN makes Bitcoin work for buying things in person where you need that instant payment.

Yes. Also, how long has LN been around? I think the first transaction was only in 2019... so it's just a baby, and it already performs beautifully... maybe a few kinks to work out, but it just needs a few years and it will only get better.
5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: zomg lightning netowrk payment is fast as heck on: March 04, 2023, 04:10:09 AM
I just did my first every lightning network payment from a smartphone wallet to a desktop wallet ( 2 different wallets, muun and phoenix )
Can you please clarify what desktop wallet you used exactly for lightning transactions, since Muun and Phoenix are both mobile only wallets?
Maybe it's possible to install them on computer using some Android emulator, but that is not exactly what you would call a desktop wallet.

Muun is mobile only ( Im using Android )
but with Phoenix, I was able to install it via the Mac App Store ( IOS ) on my Mac Mini, and it works great. ( with Muun on the Mac App Store, it specified that it was iPhone-only )

Also to the people above who answered some of my questions... thank you, I would give you merit points, but apparently I have no merit points to give Sad

So can someone tell me... is the fee based on the amount you send?
If you setup your own channel, there should be no fee. Assuming you have your own node and connect to another node to set up a channel, the transaction you will make on that channel should be free. Fee can vary, the lightning network node runners are the ones that set the fee. The more the hubs to route your transaction too, the higher the fee.

Cool, thanks for the info...
this is even more of a reason for me to set up a node.
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: zomg lightning netowrk payment is fast as heck on: March 03, 2023, 07:31:33 AM
I just tried another payment, about 10 bucks US,

on my 'muun' wallet it quoted a 7 cent fee

when I received the payment ( again, only took about a second ) my fee was 91 cents, and I was given a message that a new fee channel was opened for me to receive the payment.

So OK, I guess that is done to ensure a fast payment.
I am also guessing that if people don't want fees to go over a certain  amount they can set that up.

So can someone tell me... is the fee based on the amount you send?
because last night, I was playing around with sending like, a  penny per transaction, and the fee was a fraction of a penny

thanks for any info you can give

I just did my first every lightning network payment from a smartphone wallet to a desktop wallet ( 2 different wallets, muun and phoenix )
Now, I think I had my fee set way to high for the feww bucks I sent ( 3000 sats ),
but man it was almost instant, like less than a second.

Someday I will set up a node.

February 27, BLiTZ: News On the island of Bali in Indonesia, Russian investment blogger Yuri Boytsov was beaten and robbed. According to the tg-channel Baza, unknown persons forced him to transfer bitcoins in the amount of $284,000 to their accounts. According to him, the attackers are an Indonesian in the form of a policeman, a man in a Balaklava, as well as two “two men of Caucasian appearance.”

According to the blogger, the attackers broke into his villa and began to demand money for the fact that he “dumped” someone. Fighters did not want to give away their funds. And then the unknown hit him on the head several times. So they managed to force the Russian to unlock the smartphone and transfer the passwords. Some transfers had to be verified.

His girlfriend, who was with Boytsov, said that the service did not miss a transfer for such a large amount. To fulfill their plan, the kidnappers photographed a Russian citizen with a passport and sent the photo to the support service. After that, the hijackers left the villa, and the victims went to the local law enforcement officers to write a statement. The police managed to detain one of the alleged perpetrators – their faces were visible on video from surveillance cameras – but he denies his guilt. According to the detainee, the Russian is a swindler himself.

i'm sorry for the victim, who seems to be still unable to get his bitcoins, news of robberies like this have caused a stir several times because the thief did not want cash or other valuables from the victim but only targeted the victim's bitcoin.

there is no detailed explanation of how the thief could find out that the tourist has bitcoins, however, bitcoin ownership cannot tell it to other people because it is very sensitive and can provoke crime.

if you have already told other people the number of your bitcoins, you should make other reasons when people ask you about it again, crime can come from anyone and anywhere, so being suspicious is quite important.

I was just wondering, in your signature you quote ' help the victim scammed by Cold Key '
Can you give details about this?

Also, as per the news story... I think the Russian should have had a wallet with a passphrase... the passphrase would lead to a secondary wallet that would have only a small amount
10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 25th Seed Phrase on: January 05, 2023, 07:56:42 AM
Hi Guys...
just a quick question...
if this guy had a 25th seed phrase enabled, would that have prevented the hack?

Thanks

doesnt matter if its a long string of characters or a bunch of words. if its has been typed into a compromised PC that a hacker can see files of.. the hacker can get it

even a latest hardware wallet. a hacker can simply set up a phished/emulating GUI display to show "error with device. to reset device please re enter your seed" or whatever their error pages look like to get people to type it in.

Thanks

12  Economy / Exchanges / Re: FTX has been hacked, delete the app, don't go to website on: November 12, 2022, 06:14:26 AM
I only trust exchanges with a few hundred $ worth of btc,
if I can make it into thousands then I cash out the original investment
don't trust exchanges with more than  a few hundred bucks
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What will be running in your mind if Bitcoin reaches $1000 again on: November 12, 2022, 06:08:26 AM
I think Bitcoin, currently being at $16K, is just lots of investors who don't understand that fundamentally, Bitcoin is rock-solid.
They see FTX go belly-up, the fear and irrationality kicks in, and they dump... so I buy it up, thanks.
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Elon Musk on Twitter: "Chihuahua." The Sheep: "We Love You Elon, BTC is Dying!" on: May 17, 2021, 05:52:41 AM
The Elon pump was fun , but people should pay more attention to what Greyscale and Microstrategy are doing... and other ETFs and the like.
( hint, they are gobbling up all the Bitcoins that the twitter-crowd are selling )

Bitmex 'reported' this story... they just wanted to liquidate longs.
18  Economy / Speculation / Re: Are we going to see another PANIC on: March 09, 2020, 06:22:19 AM
Bitcoin has decreased significantly within last days. In some of the local group I am active, some people are trying to sell their Bitcoin, some are looking for what's happening and it seems to be little panic here.
If the price continue to decrease, I think it will create more panic which will bring capitulation, will not it?

Bitcoin is doing fine, considering WTI oil just dumped 30%
How often do you see that?
And the DOW is looking like i'ts going to have another -5% drop today...
And thats a major index comprised of Trillions of dollars worth of stock.
Bitcoin is down about 14% , and has a market cap of a couple hundred billion.

Bitcoin will skyrocket only when everyone is as frustrated as the OP.
When everyone has given up and forgotten about Bitcoin... then the price will spike up.
