1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Possible to Set up a full node on 10 year old PC? on: June 22, 2021, 10:15:25 AM
Are you planning to install any Linux distributions? If so, install it and follow this guide: https://bitcoin.org/en/full-node#linux-instructions. It doesn't get simpler and more concise than that.

Ok maybe Linux might be a way which i did ponder. I had a look at the article and noticed nothing around lightning network.

Essentially I want to be able to run something like MyNode where i can utilize the lightning network and have an interface like MyNode to access similar things.

2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The real reason I got into bitcoin on: June 22, 2021, 10:04:27 AM

Now I was a die hard bitcoin fan, still am a little, but the more I thought about the end game of bitcoin the less I became a fan. Like eventually bitcoin will be 100% premine to kids born in 2142, why don`t they get a chance to mine rewards? how is that fair to them? or how it is inevitable that circulating supply will go to 0 due to dust, bugs, lost passwords, breaking hardware, death. That does not really seem great for humanity in the future. It also leads to mass murder and robbery and eventually miner wars.

This is very very pessimistic, the future depends on the steps we take. each of us have a say, can create & implement things. We can create new ways of governance. We can look out for the kids of the year 2142 but taking necessary action now.

Further more, I believe with how quick technology is advancing that between now and then new generations will find new ways to create systems and new models of hierarchy. The future could be a utopia if those who are conscious and aware of how their actions affect others, little lone the future of the world so long as we all don't become complacient after selfish needs of the lambo go to the moon culture.

Don't forget about the 2nd, 3rd, 4th layers to bitcoin. Universal Basic Income could be a result of crypto development. AI is unavoidable and doesn't mean it will turn the population of humans to dust of bones and flesh. When people are given more time they can work on bigger issues.

Stack your sats, create generational wealth teach your kids, nephews and nieces solid values and pass it down to them when your ready to go back to your true self, omni present and omni potent consciousness.
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Possible to Set up a full node on 10 year old PC? on: June 22, 2021, 09:45:24 AM
Hey there,

I'm looking to setup a full node on an old computer.

Specs: 4gb ram / Core 2 Quad / 2.8 GHz

Running windows 8 however when I look at raspberry pies I feel this may be able to work, I don't want to set it up via windows. I would rather do outside of windows and set up the node software like you do on a pi.

I've tried to find tutorials on the tube but unable to locate something relevant to me.

If you can point me to past topics on this forum or other links I would gladly appreciate it.

Thanks

I'm in a similar boat. Nano might be a bit much for a child starter, and you don't want to bore them either, I started mine off with things like novelty bitcoin stuff and worked up to satori/small paper wallets it's working so far. Its touchy because the first part they get lost they tend to think it's boring.
Make the impalable, palable. Intangible, tangible.
It's difficult explaining btc to most adults, children I would approach slowly. Just my opinion mine is a couple years younger.

yes educating adults is tough, but i feel kids are slightly more intuitive with tech and electronics. Sure don't want to bore them either, i'm good at keeping things light and fun with my daughter even dense topics.

Thanks i'll look into it.

The block explorer is likely to be correct. If those addresses are empty, then it likely means that you made a transaction from them and all the funds which you didn't send to the recipient's address were moved to a change address as I've explained above. If you look at the individual address on a block explorer then it will be empty, but in Ledger Live it will show you the combined total of all the addresses within that account, including the change addresses, which is where your bitcoins now reside.

I don't like that I can't locate my btc on the block explorer, I used blockchain.info, it suffices. But i had a little sweat moment when I couldn't see funds in Electrum coupled with what looked like my funds been moved on the explorer, yikes!.

anyway i've moved it all over to bc1 addresses tried electrum and everything is there as it appears, no issues.

I think the change addresses really played up on electrum, looks like electrum is mainly either legacy or native and dosn't support p2sh too well.

I didn't realize p2sh was multisig too
6  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Connecting my Ledger to Electrum. Only 1 account is Showing, I have more, help! on: November 30, 2019, 01:26:56 PM
Aside from the "missing" funds, that all seems fairly normal... as you use each account, new receiving addresses will be used... as you spend, the change from your outgoing transactions ends up in "change" addresses.

we'll you see i'm trying to run a test here to see if my funds appear, I'll be using my ledger/accounts via electrum so I can sign from the address for a token airdrop, if it dosn't display my funds correctly I may not get credited the appropriate amount in the airdrop.

Sounds like it might be a "gap limit" issue... It's possible you've used a receiving address in Ledger Live that is actually out past the gap limit that Electrum is using (20 by default) so it's just not finding an inbound transaction or 2...

not sure what a gap limit issue is? i've noticed in the ledger some of the ins went to two addresses, one to a change address.

Are you missing the 0.2 BTC from one "account"? Or is it smaller amounts from each account that add up to 0.2 BTC? Huh
when I add the total up of what I can see in my accounts via electrum its about .2 btc shy of where it should be.

its hard to see your balance on a blockexplorer, i've noticed amounts get split sometimes but when i look up 2 of my receiving addresses for two accounts on a blockexplorer the addresses are empty  Huh but ledger live is displaying everything correctly...

also, I've only got 2 small outs on two accounts, everything else hasn't been touched since it landed there
7  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Connecting my Ledger to Electrum. Only 1 address is Showing, I have more, help! on: November 30, 2019, 12:15:05 PM
What do you mean "only 1 address is showing", from the receive tab or the addresses tab?
In the addresses tab (view->Show addresses), there should be at least 20+ addresses if you only used 4.

If you meant "accounts" refer to above post;

Note: Accounts and addresses aren't the same.

Yes I think I mean accounts, I've created accounts in my ledger I have 4 accounts.

You have to create separate wallets for each of your accounts. You have to modify the last number of the derivation path which is shown under the address type selection. Select the type of address you want before modyfing the last number. 0 is the first account, 1 the second and so on. Don't forget about ' which should at the end.

Thanks for the concise response it made sense so I tried it. I changed the ending 0 of the deviation number and moved up through 0-3, 4 and beyond showed nothing.

0-3 I was able to retrieve amounts in those accounts but not the full amounts.

I'm short .2 btc here, I also noticed that when I navigate over to "Addresses" there are many listed there, the first one appears to be my retriving address with 0 balance and lower down there is a balance listed under "change" address type. its the same for all the accounts

If the title didn't explain it I'm basically trying to access my Ledger Nano S via Electrum desktop windows wallet, I believe I've made the right moves to set up a standard wallet > use Ledger Nano S > Choose P2SH address type as all my addresses are that format.

Then when i'm ready to view the accounts only one address shows up, i have at least 4 in total. Can anyone help with suggestions?

10  Other / Off-topic / I bought my 10 year daughter a Ledger Nano S, not sure if it's the right move. on: November 29, 2019, 10:31:19 AM
I'm just writing as recently I purchased myself a Ledger Nano S & during the same checkout purchased my 10 y/o daughter a Ledger too.

There's been a mix up with the postage where I've only received one item and not two, even though the invoice on the parcel said there was 2 enclosed. Either way I've reached out to Ledger about it & i'm still waiting for appropriate correspondence.

Anyway, I needed to get myself a Nano and decided to buy two. I have this idea on how I can educate my daughter on Bitcoin, money, saving, technology etc all at once and I want her to have a good comprehensive understanding of it crypto/bitcoin, its quite complex and i imagine it will take some time but ideally, by the time shes 18 I want her to have that knowledge base of understanding, and one hell of a competitive advantage vs her peers as I believe that this crypto thing is just getting started and wont be going away.

Also her mother (we are separated) isn't the best saver and I think recently she's gotten into a bit of debt using credit cards, she was in debt when we got together but worked herself out of it, i'm not certain but i know her money and spending habits aren't the best.  I don't feel that's a great example for our daughter even though its an indirect thing by example.

Essentially i thought that if i buy her a ledger nano and we do the whole set up, (writing down passphrases, set up pins, install the crypto app, create the accounts and tags for accounts, get her to physically execute the transfer of her funds from my wallet to hers etc) she'll have a hands on experience with it all, it would help drive the concept home. Also at the end of the day she gets to take home a tangible item which reflects her BTC holdings.

Some family members think its a bit much but if tell my daughter she has BTC she doesn't have a sense of ownership over it and tends to forget till I remind her later. Where as if she has the nano every time she comes across it she'll remember she has BTC.

I've already spoken with my daughter about this idea and layed down some ground rules, mainly that she's not allowed to spent what I've accumilated for her till shes 40 and that when she gets a job in the future she'll have to contribute 20% of her income to her nano too.

However, is she old enough to start this? maybe should i wait a few more years? I can always create an account under my nano and tag it as her holdings till a later date and add to it as I would if she had the nano.

While writing this I received an email from Ledger and that they have lost the second item.
Do I want to get a refund for it or should I go ahead with the plan and get a new shipment out?
11  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S Hypothetical Situation, Curious on the answers on: November 24, 2019, 02:08:29 AM
The method where you delete the coin in your Ledger could be a great way to have a set and forget the of thing. Don't worry; it's just a way to keep track of your holdings, so if you decide to delete one of them, you might forget that you have one. There could be advantages and disadvantages to that like:

  • Pros
    • Setting a coin and completely forgetting everything
    • Eventually remembering the coin you saved and thankful that you remembered
    • Set a time and date to check if the value has changed
  • Cons
    • Completely forgetting it and it lost value
A lot of people have done that, and it's been okay for them.

nice, a good approach but i'll never forget how much i got on my bags, unless i get hit in the head somehow and forget that way. I guess its a good security measure tho, if you get robbed one day with a gun to your head and have to open up your ledger live interface, to have a majoirty hidden away would be a good idea.

I did get access to a pc today so i installed ledger live and loaded my ledger up on it and i see what you guys mean about how the addresses are there. simple as adding an account. I also deleted an account and got it back. ledger is boss.
12  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Ledger Nano S Hypothetical Situation, Curious on the answers on: November 22, 2019, 10:31:18 AM
In the ledger nano s you need to install apps (apps been btc, eth, ltc - coins)

after that you create addresses for the coins.

I've got a few million satoshis sitting on one of those addresses, and i'm curious what would happen if I navigated to the top right (on the edit account tab) and were to delete the address that held my coins.

would it be recoverable?
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Did I compromise my paper wallet? Help and opinions appreciated on: November 17, 2019, 01:57:58 PM

hmm, i do have a hardware wallet but I wanted a unique new address for a donation tip jar, hence why i was going with the paper wallet .

Did you know you can create unlimited "unique" addresses with your hardware Wallet, right?you don't need to create a paper wallet and be exposed to all those risks just to make a new address

For donations, many people use a vanity generator. Like 3savekids3jKhs..

ahh k, i've got the ledger nano s. wasn't aware of that! i'll explore that

no problems, its very well put together, good blend of price, speculation and tech. I feel more people need to see this.
15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Did I compromise my paper wallet? Help and opinions appreciated on: November 17, 2019, 11:45:46 AM

There are many risks, many weak points when considering making a paper wallet.

My suggestion is that you make one only for educational purposes. Buy a hardware wallet, trezor or ledger. Those are the safer, they are cheap (about $ 80) and you probably never lose your money.

hmm, i do have a hardware wallet but I wanted a unique new address for a donation tip jar, hence why i was going with the paper wallet .

Thanks for the info guys, a few links I can explore to better generate wallets in the future.

The computer i generated the wallet on hasn't got malware, I'm sure of it, its only ever used for media creation a (adobe suite) and that's it.
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Did I compromise my paper wallet? Help and opinions appreciated on: November 16, 2019, 08:34:28 PM
yes, while i was connected to the internet. Sad

how is it that been connected to the net whilst "printing to PDF" locally would leave me part fucked?

or are you saying in general that when generating paper wallets online regardless of how you save them is risky?
17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Did I compromise my paper wallet? Help and opinions appreciated on: November 16, 2019, 08:09:48 PM
So I was on a PC the other day and made a new paper wallet over https://segwitaddress.org/

I saved a copy of it using snipping tool on windows to save a screencap of the public key and private keys and saved it onto my secure crypto usb.

Then I also, and this is where I might've fucked up,  I also right clicked and selected 'Print to PDF' to save a PDF of the webpage too.

My question is: Does the PC (Windows 10) store the printed file anywhere? I've removed it entirely off the pc and onto my usb too however i'm worried that there is a cashe of the file stored somewhere on the PC or in the browser (google chrome).?

I'm thinking it may be a file or a piece of data that an average user man not stumble upon however a hacker could uncover...

If there is a file somewhere on the PC how do i remove and completely clear the data? or am i overly cautious and should not worry.

Thoughts?
