2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Best Symbol For The Satoshi on: August 06, 2019, 06:06:10 AM
I have a few very important things to point out on this subject.

1: We're not replacing "BTC". We're discussing a new symbol to represent the unit of BTC, "satoshi". We have a symbol for $ and ¢. It only makes sense to have BTC and $@. Additionally, other denominations of BTC , bits, etc., can coexist with satoshis as useful units.

2: the $ symbol is used for some 20 currencies around the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollar I think for many people around the world '$' is understood to mean "money" in general. The sat symbol ($@) is not a shoutout to our fiat friends, its is a symbol of a new kind of money, decentralized internet money.

3. $@ could potentially be aesthetic and functional. I image sending bitcoin could be as simple as sending an email: "1000$@alice". One idea is to not have a designated $@ key on the keyboard, which would create significant hardware issues. Instead, you could produce the sat symbol by typing the two characters, "$@", consecutively, which would then automatically be converted the sat symbol. This approach would require only software development and would likely not require keyboard changes.

4. Creating a completely new symbol for sats is not a menial task. I personally believe that $@ is very intuitive and has great potential. However, I also understand the appeal of using a character already in Unicode.

5. The satoshi symbol should emerge organically, in true bitcoin fashion. Developers and users should feel free to use whichever symbol they feel best represents the satoshi.

If you think $@ is a good option, please consider sharing and contributing to the project! https://github.com/bitficus/theSat
