2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mt. Gox needs to give more time between reopening and starting trading. on: June 23, 2011, 09:02:01 PM
So if you don't get a chance to log in before trading starts.. your orders will still be there and will execute?  I hope that's not how they do it.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I can understand, this is all up to Mt. Gox, isn't it? Not really much the users can do about it.
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: my linux box was hacked today and almost 400 BTC were stolen! on: June 23, 2011, 08:46:36 PM
By saying "my linux box just got hacked, and now I'm going to get sued", he also pretty much said:

"I downloaded something from an untrusted source, intentionally set it to executable, and then intentionally executed it. I gave the hacker your money. Now I am going to get sued because I am an idiot."
There are quite a few other ways to exploit a box running Linux. Attempting the method you described there would be my last thought.
4  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Looks like they may have found the MtGox crooks? on: June 23, 2011, 10:45:08 AM
I believe it means the FBI raided a datacenter and confiscated some servers. This actually happens quite often, so could you please enlighten us on how you made the jump in logic to deduct that this had something to do with Mt. Gox being hacked?

JPMorgue Chase and Goldman Sachs would like politely disagree with you here
They don't act like they are immune. They act like they have the money to settle any cases. And they do.
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: WTF @ Mt.Gox?! on: June 23, 2011, 10:38:56 AM
I pointed that out on the other tread. that, my friends, is called extortion. you cant say your product is less secure unless the users pay more money. this isn't the fucking mafia. these clowns really are clueless. shit got real way to fast for these kids. but they have been thrown into the pool now. they will either learn to swim or sink.
Of course you can say that your product is more secure for those who pay. Why shouldn't you be able to say so in a free market? This is completely normal in the grown-up world.
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Price of gold crashes to nothing on: June 23, 2011, 10:36:45 AM
If there was a robbery, no.

However, if someone suddenly flooded the market selling their gold reserves, the price would take a drastic hit.
8  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why all the bitcoin haters? on: June 22, 2011, 09:18:31 PM
Since I am skeptical towards bitcoin, I guess that makes me a hater?

I am not afraid of bitcoins. I understand how they work. I have quite a good grasp on economy, mathematics, markets and trading. That is why I am skeptical towards bitcoin. The thing is, bitcoin does have quite a few legitimate skeptical questions surrounding it, and after reading these forums for quite some time before registering, I've seen that the biggest enemy for bitcoin in the "battle" towards becoming a full on currency alternative are the evangelists.

Any skeptical question is immediately shot down with "troll", "you don't know how it works", "get out of here" and other replies in the same tone. Sure, there are a fair share of utter retards posting nonsense here trying to look cool or whatever in bashing bitcoins, but not all of us are being skeptical just to be skeptical.

If I have a question about a problem with bitcoins, and ask it in a normal polite manner, I would expect a normal and polite answer. If I'm wrong and my problems are only perceived problems, then by all means show me what I'm not getting. I would welcome it, since it would give me a chance to learn. But the "oldtimers" very often seem to be in instant attack mode for any skeptics, and don't even bother answer questions properly. That's why, after all my time reading, I'm still skeptical. I don't see anyone actually tackling the problems that bitcoin is having.
9  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Looking to buy bitcoins with paypal on: June 22, 2011, 09:02:40 PM
Hasn't PayPal put a ban on bitcoin buying/selling due to the extremely high chargeback volumes? With chargebacks PayPal gets extra work and no money, meaning they would be pretty quick to freeze accounts dealing with it.
10  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How long will we be able to mine? on: June 22, 2011, 09:00:24 PM
Mining will go on forever, however new blocks will stop being created somewhere around 2130, if my memory serves. (Actually 2140, just checked)
So that is when the 21,000,000th bitcoin is generated?

Though, from what I'm seeing, the speed of which blocks are generated will depend on the available hardware? So how would it be possible to calculate this, considering we have no idea what power hardware will have in the future. Even predicting the power of hardware a couple of years ahead is close to impossible.

Howdy.

I'm one of the skeptics when it comes to bitcoins, but I'm always willing to learn and have any mistaken negative thoughts disproven  Smiley
