Life should be fair. I agree. I think that it's unfair some people are smarter than others. Let's give them brain damage! Also, what about people that are better looking? Acid to the face! Lots of hair? Scalp removal! Taller than me? Chop off their feet! Skinny? Force-fed donuts! The sooner we all sink to the same level, the sooner I can stop feeling sorry for my own personal shortcomings. There was a short story with this concept. Beautiful people had to wear masks and such. What was it called? There is also at least one song: Rush - The Trees: There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their please.
The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty

Gold is obsolete money. Will never be used as money again. Gold is only valuable for its utility.
Gold is valuable and will continue to be valuable because people remember it to be valuable. It's part of our culture. There will always be this. Utility be damned. Idiots with disposable income will always exist, as will enterprising individuals willing to sell them worthless(?) shiny shit. Now if only we could cover Ferraris with bitcoins. |

As BTC approaches zero, the hoarders will realize they are sitting on a pile of nothing. The 6.8 million bitcoins really need to be spread out and sold. ^this. Those with lots of bitcoins need to start investing in and building the bitcoin economy, or they'll be left with nothing but a lot of play money. As somebody else said here, better to have 50% of a lot than 100% of nothing. |

But here's something to think about. If I found this diamond so big that it could make all diamonds worthless... What exactly could I do with it? The only thing I could do is break it down into smaller diamonds and sell those. I'd hold onto my big diamond and only buy stuff as I needed to. It would make sense for me to keep my wealth hidden and secret, rather than destroying the world's economy.

As people find deposits of precious metals and minerals today? The world doesn't end. Some people just get rich.
Furthermore, metals take up physical space. Please tell me where 100 times the current quantity of gold might suddenly appear, assuming, of course, that the world is running on gold as its currency. Yeah gold is a poor analogy. Diamonds are better. So say one day I'm digging in my backyard one day and I find a watermelon sized perfect diamond worth fifty quadrillion dollars. What you're proposing is about as likely. By the time bitcoins would appreciate in value to the point a flash drive could cause serious damage, such media would be well past it's expiration date. The data would be unrecoverable. Plus. I'm guessing whoever has a large amount of bitcoins today will probably spread them around a bit (if they don't, bitcoins won't be used and won't be worth much anyway). |

It is infinitly divisible (up to 8 decimal places right now, easily expandable with a modification of the client); so even if at one point there is only a total of 1BTC circulating in the whole world that will still be more than enough
There are issues with that scenario that I have pointed out in other threads, but others don't seem to agree with me. Assuming the scenario you have illustrated, you must agree that it is possible that 100, or even 1,000 Bitcoins could be rediscovered, thus the World's economy, which was thriving on 1 Bitcoin, has now undergone 100 or even 1,000 fold inflation overnight if the Bitcoins are dumped on the market. They're calling it a way to get "free bitcoins". Good job OP. I don't suppose you'd "fully disclose" that the "exploit" as you call it, is not, in fact, a way to get "free bitcoins". I don't suppose you'd bother to correct the misinformation you've fostered.
You can't blame him for 'journalists' writing about matter they have little to no knowledge about. Oh I very much CAN blame him, as he started the false implication. The journalist was merely repeating (accurately) what he read in the OP. |

What you did is no different than what Lulzsec has been doing this past 50 days - blatantly disregarding the safety of individuals in order to make a point, arrogantly. You say that like it's a bad thing Fool. You see no further than the immediate. LulzSec did nothing more than create an excuse for the authorities to try and clamp down on the Internet and/or bit coin (how they were seen to be funded). For an added bonus, they mixed in immigration and drug issues into their troll. Now the average Joe will welcome the "protection" of our brand new, locked down, internet -- free from the dangers inherent to anonymity. Technology may not exist now, or ever, but they, and the momentum they have created, will certainly create the demand. Similarly, your actions reflect on bitcoin itself in the public eye, and you don't seem to care. I wonder why. |

Please don't repeat the OP's false insinuation that he somehow found an exploit. It's a display bug. Nothing more, and drawing such public (false) light to it serves no purpose but to make Mt. Gox and bit coin look bad. Something the OP was seeking, i'd wager. Yes, there is a time for full disclosure, but it's only after private channels have failed to fix the issue.

Yeah, but your "full disclosure" was based on the assumption that the trade would execute. It wouldn't. It's a bug, yes, but hardly a showstopper.

I paid 70 bucks to get an earlier flight home because I would have missed it otherwise. Yesterday I skipped the fucking banquet at the end of the fucking conference I was at. It is costing me a lot to be here.
Couldn't pay $5 for wifi at the hotel? I think he was trying to say he would not have wifi in-flight. |

Ok. So i'm gonna be pissed if this is delayed. There are so many other things I could be doing than refreshing a page.
Then go do them. And possibly miss a reopening and the opportunities that come with early access? I am not willing to risk my money like that. This is absurd. I made plans based on the deadline they specified. They keep missing it. I keep having to avoid doing other fun things (or sleeping) because i'm not sure if MtGox is going to open up while I'm asleep. What they are doing is simply rude. I'd accept "next week" if they could deliver it. |

2. Speed
Pick one.
3. TradeHill I will likely go there too (or perhaps a third option), but in the mean time, I would like to think Mt. Gox is taking the proper time to take the claims process seriously, and somebody else isn't engineering their way into my account. You can't simultaneously criticize Mt. Gox for not taking enough time to secure their shit, and demand they hurry up, throwing security to the wind in favor of convenience. |
