1  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Would it be possible to reestablish the decimal value of a bitcoin? on: May 02, 2014, 02:53:15 AM
Quote
That's silly.  That's like saying there is a psychological factor of having "just a few thousand dollars".  Anyone who feels that way, isn't capable of logic and reason.  As such, they wouldn't contribute much to the economy anyhow.  Eventually, when all they can have is "just a few micro-bitcoin, they may finally see reality and come around.

The problem with techies is that they never listen to average joe concerns and marketing people.  These units are unusable counting number of zeros each time you want to pay and missing one. It is easier to deal with whole numbers and two decimal places because everybody is used to that.

This is why marketing departments exist. You and I might take the time to understand something like this but the average person tunes out after less than a minute. If it's not completely self-evident or there isn't a big push for them to figure it out they'll just give up almost right away.
2  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: nTek Computers | World's Most Powerful Bitcoin Miner - 2.4Th/s (to 3.2Th/s) on: April 23, 2014, 02:50:17 AM
They've made a lot of promises before and not delivered anything. If not a scam they're at least a BFL-style preorder scheme, taking orders before they even have a product design.
3  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Another Ponzi scheme? (by HashFast) on: March 29, 2014, 03:10:40 AM
No, a ponzi scheme is a very specific thing. They wouldn't produce anything at all and just pay out proceeds to the initial purchasers based on money collected from later purchasers.

Using pre-order money to develop a product is not what I would call good business practice, but it's not a ponzi scheme and it's not even illegal. See Kickstarter for a popular example of this sort of business practice.

And no, I don't think they'll make their release date. I'm personally not willing to pre-order anything, least of all Bitcoin mining equipment.
4  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ntek 1.2th/s miner? on: March 29, 2014, 02:54:31 AM
So, the gist is they claim a 14 day wait on their site. No one who's ordered has received anything and some people had had issues getting refunds.

No one has been given a shipping date and if you had ordered from anyone else you'd have a miner by now. So this is either a scam or a poorly run operation.

Nice.
5  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: How to turn on rig without power button? on: March 17, 2014, 04:04:27 AM
I always set them in BIOS to "FULL ON after Power Back", it also ensures that after a blackout the miner will turn on. Then I also enable WOL and Power On by RTC alarma and set it to something like "everyday 12:00:00 PM", so I don't need to come close to the room with miners, even if for some reason they turn off, they will be back somehow.

This way I can go on business trips for whatever long I want and I don't need to worry about miners going down (except for PSU failure, but that's different story).

That's what I do too, it's easy and they'll reboot after power outages. I've also got WOL on and Teamviewer set up on every box just in case I need to remote in.
6  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Why am I still mining? on: March 16, 2014, 04:13:35 AM
It's totally impossible to see the future. Right now you have to bet on Bitcoin increasing in value. Of course you could just buy the Bitcoins directly instead.

I find the current prices for the cost-effective mining units too high to stomach. I went into mining Litecoins last year using the GPUs I had been using for Bitcoin (and adding more). Because of the recent spike in AMD GPU prices I sold off almost all my cards at MORE than I paid for them (most of them were more than 12 months old). It was just more profitable to sell the cards.

Under current market conditions I think I'm done. There could be plenty more profit left in this, but I think there is a limit to what the market can bare long term. The price is going to crash and crash hard at some point and I don't want to be there holding the bag.
7  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Have I killed my graphic card? on: March 16, 2014, 04:05:53 AM
That's definitely not something I've ever seen before, and I've seen a lot of computer problems. Have you tried taking the card out and testing it in another system?

There shouldn't be anything in the buffer if you turn the system entirely off, it's volatile memory.
8  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: BFL Monarch More Delays on: March 08, 2014, 03:04:11 AM
Do you remember when they claimed they'd have Monarch's shipped out in October 2013?

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't start shipping until October 2014.
9  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Are all gpu coolers compatible with each gpu?How to make sure it will be? on: February 25, 2014, 04:52:15 AM
If you're looking for one for Radeon 7950, 7970 or 280xs you have to get one that specifically supports those models. The reason for this is that the GPU is installed at a 45 degree angle and coolers not specifically designed to fit those cards won't. But coolers designed for any of those cards will fit all reference and most non-reference designs of all of those cards.

That is, unless you're into manually modifying the contact surface. Then you can buy anything. I've managed to cut quite a few GPU coolers to fit cards they're not designed to fit in the past, but the higher end Radeons are a pain.
10  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Are all gpu coolers compatible with each gpu?How to make sure it will be? on: February 23, 2014, 03:15:18 AM
No, definitely not. Read the manufacturer's web site, they always list supported cards. If they don't then it won't fit, guaranteed.
11  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 3$/Ghs as low 2.6$/GHs do you think sminers.com Legit ? on: February 23, 2014, 03:10:19 AM
Just doing a quick google map search on the location advertised on their site brings up a building that is under construction and located in a port.

Nordre Nostekaien 1
5011 Bergen
NORWAY

That doesn't necessarily mean anything, the building I live in is a big hole in the ground on Google maps.

Not saying this isn't a scam though, about 95% of these sites are scams.

Also, as for the new account. There was a time when newbies only had very limited forum access to prevent this sort of thing. Don't expect anyone to believe you unless you put in some time here because shill accounts are very common.
12  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Nvidia Just Might Steal The Cryptocurrency Mining Crown From AMD on: February 23, 2014, 03:02:58 AM
Preitty sure ASICs are already tops for "cyptocurrency". That is the one that matters! Give scrypt altcoins a few months and it will be the same there too.
13  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ntek 1.2th/s miner? on: February 15, 2014, 03:19:29 AM
Can you fart out and deliver a better miner?

Anyone can "do" a better website... it is never about the website. Ever!

And the lousier the website, the better the technological product!

Someone failed marketing class. Sometimes it's the best website that wins regardless of product quality.
14  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: {BFL} WHAT! :( Butterfly Lads won't deliver the Monarch Till March or April:( on: February 13, 2014, 02:04:27 AM
Don't worry, I'm sure they'll start slowly shipping small quantities by November!
15  Other / Archival / Re: SwiftMiner 2.2TH/s BTC Miners Available for March Delivery! on: February 13, 2014, 01:28:57 AM
Red flag alert, no address and no phone number!

Also Swiftminer is not a legal corporation or small business name as is legally required by Canadian law!

Website is Wordpress + WooCommerce Plugin with modified enfold theme. Not terrible, but not too time consuming either.
16  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Anyone see the video of an "operational" Bitmine.ch 1 TH/s CoinDesk? on: February 13, 2014, 01:16:35 AM
If you want real fraud you can literally program yourself a fake display any time you like. Animate one, hack CGMiner (which is open source) or just write a quick console app.

I don't know what these videos are meant to prove. Maybe I'll make an example fake video just to show you what I mean.

I'm not saying if it's a fraud or not, but judging based on looks is totally pointless because it's just so easy to fake.
17  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ntek 1.2th/s miner? on: February 13, 2014, 01:03:01 AM
I could fart out a better website in 10 minutes.
18  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Which Companies ask for receipt from authorized reseller for RMA on: February 09, 2014, 09:06:29 PM
Almost all of them. I'd assume they do unless otherwise stated.
19  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: my mtgox account has been robbed this night. on: February 09, 2014, 09:04:03 PM
Anything is possible, I wouldn't trust MTGox with anything right now. The rumour is that they don't actually have the money to pay their customers because they've been paying operating costs (including lawsuits) using customer funds.
20  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 1THS,1000W, Bitcoin miner coming. on: February 09, 2014, 08:55:32 PM
Butterfly has the 600 GH/s Monarch for $2196. I think that is the cheapest per GH price I have seen.
http://www.butterflylabs.com/monarch/

Thats $3.66 /GH
This one is $6.50/GH almost double!

The only problem is when I saw it first just 4 weeks ago, the BFL Monarch could make one BTC in 5 days. Still has not even shipped yet.
Now it makes one BTC in almost 9 days, ONLY IF YOU HAD IT TODAY, but you dont, BFL is using them to mine.

By the time it ships it will make one BTC in 50 days and that 50 days will never come because it keeps increasing while you wait for the 50 days. So its a never ending cycle.

Plus the moment the 45000 BFL cards get released and hit the market, BTC difficulty will quadrouple in a matter of few days so those cards the moment you open the box are obsolete.

Hahahaha, BFL. If they're on the same sort of schedule as last time the design isn't even taped out yet. You'd be lucky to get one by this time next year.
