KYC, AML, and SoF checks should work the following way, if applicable: The exchange asks you to provide the address that you will pay from. When you do, they do their background checks with their third-party blockchain analysis providers. You receive feedback that states that your coins are either ok or additional information will be needed from you.
Some exchange services (I won’t name them to keep them off the regulatory radar) actually do work this way. |

If the exchange was used by criminals, then go after those criminals, build your case, and arrest them. The world wasn't unsafe with eXch around and it won't be any safer with them gone.
If you work in a supermarket and a thief comes and buys something, should the police close the market down and arrest the manager and staff because they allowed a criminal to buy his food there? They should not.

~~~ It may be an unrelated coincidence and the ETH node software just sucks as we've seen problem reports by eXch regarding their ETH node more often that with their other coins nodes. Shitty ETH node software isn't directly a fault of eXch, it's rather the Ethereum ecosystem which is to blame. eXch should try running Rust Ethereum. It's much more reliable than Go-Ethereum in my opinion. Runs well even on consumer-grade hardware |

I respect gmaxwell a lot, but I have to admit I have tried your software and checked the code and I loved it. I don't have a definitive feedback yet, but it looks good. I am just letting you know that I plan to check on your software a lot more and let you know my final thoughts. Maybe @gmaxwell could re-evaluate his negative trust to mmgen-py? I mention this here as I assume eXch wouldn't have supported and donated to MMGen wallet without careful checking the project and deeming it a worthy privacy-friendly software.

My condolences, eXch team, on the demise of your exchange, and wishing you all the best for whatever projects you choose to pursue in the future.
Your recent experience demonstrates once again that centralized crypto entities will always be attacked by the state, and that DeFi is the way forward.
And a thank you for your mention of MMGen Wallet and its commitment to privacy. It led to a spike in page hits and downloads on the mmgen.org site and Github project page, hopefully onboarding some new users.
