1  Other / Off-topic / Re: Is it normal to not want to work at all? on: February 02, 2021, 07:03:51 AM
I feel exactly the same. I cannot understand people that say if they won the lottery they'd get bored. That's insane to me. I have so many books I want to read, films to watch, video games to play, countries to visit, raves and festivals to go to. Why would you rather work instead of doing those things?! I want to start a family but what's the point when you only see your child in the evenings and weekends when you're all tired?

I was home educated but my parents are hippies and me and my siblings had no formal education. We just hung out. Played games, saw friends, went swimming in the river, read books, played with our cats. We'd visit castles or towns we've never been to. Make beer, take photographs, paint. I miss being able to do whatever I want.
I'm not sure they mean 'bored' so much as 'restless' or 'existential'. After a while of relaxing and consuming some people will feel like their life has no point or meaning. There are a lot of ways to find meaning, to make a mark on the world: writing, making music, raising children, or working for a nonprofit. When you take away the need to earn a living some people will gravitate to those pursuits. People already do those things in spite of the fact that it can be a tough and meager existence. What do you think would happen when automation makes the 'work or starve' system no longer necessary?

There are people who might be happy doing nothing but TV and video games for the rest of their life. But not everybody's like that.
2  Other / Off-topic / Re: Anyone else grow up poor but are better off now and it feels weird to buy things on: February 02, 2021, 03:15:04 AM
I wasn't quite that poor, and it was a long long time ago, and it still feels weird to look at my bank balance. A part of me still always fears that is will be taken away.
I broke into the middle class over 20 years ago, but I still have a constant nagging fear that this is all temporary and that life will bring me back at any moment.

I've done a lot to mitigate it though. My savings include a cash position that could get me (my family) by for over a year of unemployment if necessary. I have a good retirement savings. My son has a large college fund. I've also not been afraid to spend money on things that make me happy even if it's frivolous.

I don't feel like I don't belong in my position. It's just a worry that it could be fleeting, and I don't think that's ever going to be completely out of the back of my mind.
I felt the same way, like I deserve to be stuck back where i was but I know it’s just the guilt of who I have left behind. Nowadays since I have a great job and my gf is from a nicer background where she never went hungry and her family could buy cars from Acura or Lexus but not to where they could vacation every year. She knows where all the nicer restaurants, clothing stores, and everything else nicer is which helps me forget the places I used to go to. I feel safe knowing I’m doing all I can to never be poor again, and that she is how she is because it alleviates a side of me that is stuck is poor mode but has moved on. Idk if it makes sense but being with someone who was never poor helps me cope better with the guilt of how being poor was for me.
3  Other / Off-topic / Re: Is it weird to wake up 2 hours before anybody else to have time alone? on: February 01, 2021, 07:37:45 AM
Here is the thing. Even when you love someone dearly, you need time away from them.

My father went from a 5 day workweek to a 4 day, with the free day being on a day my mother works. She was annoyed at it first, because " Don't you love me and want to spend time with me." After thinking about it she understands. She likes having time just to herself as well.

They love each other dearly, go on walks at the end of each workday, having weekends away with just to two of them.

Just having some time to charge up and not having to deal with anybodies shit.

Last job I worked.

"Yea, everyone here is new, but it's totally because of covid"

"The boss doesn't like people going out to get lunch because they're afraid you'll never come back, so being your own lunch"

"You'll get weird looks if you leave on time". It was a chinese owned company with heavy chinese work culture influence so you were expected to stay overtime all week.

Also "the people here are nice but it's pretty stressful".

Eta: also was told by my trainer "you want to know the best advice I can give you? Find another job". This was like...my 2nd week in.

True story about leaving during lunch: At one job I worked many years for, I would train almost every new employee that came in. I remember two people right now.

One girl I trained all morning, then lunch time came, and she asked if there were any restaurants around. I told her “here and there” and she drove off to get lunch. Waited for her to come back after lunch, but she never came back. Made me waste my entire morning for nothing.

Another guy I trained and during training, he QUICKLY grabs his backpack and nervously asks where the bathroom is. I thought, “Damn, this guy must need to go!” I thought him grabbing his backpack was just being protective of his belongings since you know, it is his first day.

We all thought he would come back, because right by his computer that he was at, he left his lunchbox. He never came back.

Now that I think of it, what the hell happened to that lunchbox?

I'm a homeowners insurance claim adjuster. I handle mid to large size claims (usually fires, burst pipes, or similar) so most everyone I talk to is displaced from their home, is scared and confused about what's next, and has heard a million horror stories about how insurance companies just do all they can to screw you over.

About 60% of my day is spent on the phone explaining the process and policy to people, answering whatever questions they have, answering them again when they forget or get confused, getting to know customers because I'll be talking to them for the next 6-18 months, and doing my best to make them feel at ease and getting them to trust that I have their best interests at heart. About 20% is coordinating various vendors, contractors, housing, etc, and about 20% is spent looking over photos, estimates, and reports. We also have to document everything we do and nearly every conversation so there's a great deal of time dedicated to that.

Pre covid I typically drove 2-6 hrs each day to inspect homes so a lot of this work was done behind the wheel and in person.

No. You are not going dumb. May be you have less things to do or just avoiding things to do. ( like myself). But, create a new hobby or read a book or learn something online what interests you. There are thousands of free courses as well. It will just keep you busy and give you confidence. 🙏

French fries/chips/whatever you want to call them. McDonalds buys its potatoes at around 20 cents to the pound. You can get about four medium fries ($1.79) out of a pound of potatoes. Even if transport, labor, and other overhead triples the cost that's still a profit margin well over 1000%.

Margins on soda are even higher while burgers and other items have more ingredients and complexity and are thus more expensive to produce.
Well, that is $1.50 profit. (Per medium fries) Sure it is alot compared to 20 cents. But let's not forget that, even though that is a big profit. You would need to sell a shit ton of fries to even make it worth it.

Sure McDonalds has enough money to buy potatoes at $1 by the pound, but that would mean they had to sell 80% (correct my math if im wrong) more.

With that said, it is still cheap for us consumers to buy it from them, than it would be for us to make it at home.

Just throwing my 2 cents in.

We had a kid in our class who was pure chaos. Came late all the time, forgot stuff, didn't do his homework, disruptive in class... you get the picture. One day he came to school over two hours late and said the bus he was on fell into a sinkhole. Everybody was like "yeah, right", until the news came in that there had indeed been a sinkhole from a tunnel construction and that indeed a bus had slipped into it. We never found out whether our classmate had actually been in it, but he swore he was.

I like cats so much, but now I have no conditions to raise them. In 2 years, I must raise a Devon Rex cat!
10  Other / Off-topic / Re: How do you make friends when you're 30+? on: January 30, 2021, 02:53:09 AM
Join clubs of activities you enjoy. Talk to the people at your job. Write a message to your old classmates or friends. Meet your neighbours.
Agreed. Also you can find likeminded people that way... volunteering or getting a part time job in something you are actually interested might help to. I think getting out there is tough enough but to actually make a friend you'll have to break the ice and take "the next step" by asking a person to hang out with you. Friend date!
