Thank you Danny for all your advice.

Regarding hardware wallets do you perhaps have any preferences.?. I've just been looking at the Ledger Nano S.
4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet Encryption Question. on: February 04, 2017, 03:45:33 PM
I think I might know the answer to this but wanted to make sure.
I am running the latest Core wallet and have been making regular encrypted back ups....now if I were to change my encryption password and then make a new backup would that render my old backups non assessable and usable to someone who found them but only knew the old password and not the new one ?.
I hope that makes sense...:-)

If someone already had a copy of the wallet (or obtained an old backup of that wallet) that was encrypted with the old password and you changed the password to a new password, they would still be able to access the old encrypted wallet if they had the old password.

I see thank you....that's what I thought....so if someone wanted to be 100% sure that his/her current Core wallet couldn't be compromised should old back ups /passwords get into the wrong hands then creating a brand new Core wallet on a new pc and sending the Bitcoins from the current wallet to it...then backing up and re-encrypting might be the way to go ?....or to maybe buy a hardware wallet and use that instead ?.

Thank you for your quick reply.....I think I'll wait for the next version to see if moving to HD is any easier...:-)

Ah that's good news thank you for the replies....
I'm using the latest version of Core and have been backing up after *every* transaction which is obviously taking the ''back up regularly'' mantra a bit too far...!!.
Thanks again.

Did you create the wallet with the latest version of Bitcoin Core or a previous version?

Be aware that if you created the wallet with, say, 0.10.x or 0.11.x or whatever, just updating to 0.13.x won't change your wallet to a HD wallet.

You are right though, backing up after every transaction is probably overkill.

I'm sorry I'm afraid I'm a bit confused ...the Bitcoin Core wallet I have is... V 0.13.1 ...  and I have been updating this for the last few years whenever a new version comes out.
So do I need to change to a HD wallet..?...and if so where do I obtain one from please ?.

9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Frequency of back ups...? on: February 02, 2017, 02:42:56 PM
Could anyone tell me how frequently the Bitcoin Core wallet requires backing up...?.
If the last back up was carried out say a year ago and in the meantime some transactions had been made would that back up still be able to be used in the event of pc failure to create an accurate new wallet ?.

Thank you for your replies...

So when the actual main wallet is encrypted with a passphrase this encryption and same passphrase is automatically applied to the wallet.dat back up that the user then makes.

Only one encryption needs to be done...because the wallet.dat file ...*is*...the wallet.

Back ups need to be carried out preferably before 100 transactions have been completed...is this regardless of whether or not I change my address to receive coins though..?

Have I understood the above correctly can you tell me please
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Wallet backup safety.... on: April 09, 2014, 07:22:52 PM
Hello...

Sorry for this newbie question but then again I am quite ''new'' to Bitcoin as you will soon gather ..... Cheesy

I've just downloaded Bitcoin core ...the most recent version... and have encrypted and backed up my wallet.

Now my main question is if someone was to gain access to my wallet.dat file back-up could they then just place it into a new fresh wallet and steal my coins or is it the case the .dat file is also now encrypted because of the encryption I carried out on the actual main wallet...?.

and my other question is whether it is necessary to carry out a wallet back up every time coins move in and out of a wallet..?...so in other words if I have hard drive failure in a months time will the month old wallet.dat backup I've just done still be able to give me a completely accurate up to date wallet despite transactions having occurred in the meantime...?.

Any help really appreciated.

Zenone.
