Wow Plen
So there's no button that calculates the gas fee and then indicates and lets you swap the rest of what's in your account?

Not as far as I know, no

I dont get charged for these "insufficient funds" attempts I assume.

You lose all ETH you spent on gas if your transaction fails because you run out of gas (your limit was too low).

So I tried a small exchange first of $300 first and the gas fee was $45 or so
You're suggesting I leave room for another 45 and perhaps 75%

That was just a suggestion, yes. So you want to spend $300-($45x2)=$210 on ETH. So you could google "210USD in ETH" which is approximately 0.12 ETH.

Do most folks keep enough stored in uniswap where they don't have to figure out exact amounts for these transactions?

I'm not sure what most people are doing in this time of high gas prices. I understand you're doing a small transaction to test, but I imagine if you're using UniSwap you want to be exchanging a lot of $$ or the fees will absolutely kill you and doing it simply to hold

What a horrible time to suck at math.

Never a good time to suck at math Wink

With all this said, it maybe easier for you to use the "SWAP" feature of Metamask. Click it and enter an ETH value then type ALBT into the token field and click Get Quote and watch what Metamask does. Though you'll pay a Metamask premium as well.

Many thanks to all who responded. I'm trying to not abuse your good will and expertise.
Last 2 questions.
To confirm, I not only lose the gas fee when I confirm a transaction and it fails, but also when I try one and it comes back "insufficient funds"?

If I smell my neurons burning because of frustration and want to temporarily abort the altcoin transaction  what happens to the balance I see in Uniswap? Can it be sent back to coinbase with a fee, to metamask, etc? For safety purposes..?

More thanks thank you know.

No way for me to do these dollars to percentage calcuations in my head(even calculator's a bitch for me)

Thanks again for taking the time to remove the bone from my head

Trust yourself, you can do it. All you need to do is to make sure you are sending it to the RIGHT ADDRESS.

Since you mentioned Coinbase and Metamask, are you trying to send ETH right?

-Open your Metamask and copy your address there
-Open your Coinbase. Go to the Withdrawal page choose ETH then paste your receiving ETH address there which comes from your Metamask.

For now, do these first and come back here.

Hey Chaser & Anyone else who might be around to lend a hand on my first Uniswap
I have transferred the funds into metamask and have tried to convert from ether to an altcoin
When asked how much I'd like to swap I put "Max" and it came up "Insufficient funds".
I assume that's because I don't have enough to cover the max plus gas fee.
I can I put the exact amount that covers the gas fee plus what's left over?
It doesn't seem to accept a US dollar amount into the boxes.
What am I missing?

Can't thank you enough in advance.

You don't have to pay someone for doing that. You can do it alone just do it slowly and follow the step by step process through checking the addresses of the receiver properly.
Is this your first time doing it?

Thanks much for getting back to me
Still learning the terminology. I have purchased coins a couple of times so far but just through coinbase.
This extra couple of steps from metamask to uniswap is giving me the yips for some reason. Cheers

I'll give it a shot and circle back if there's a snag.  This stuff brings out the worst in my dyslexia.
Thanks much for your quick reply!

Hey Folks

Cro-magnon here trying to dip my toes into the Alt-Coin world and purchase some Alliance Block. "Semi-Understand" the first steps but would gladly pay someone $50 bucks to phone and walk me through moving from coinbase to metamask to uniswap and onto my nano s. A bit of a nervous nellie about screwing it up. If that's of any interest to anyone let me know.
