After playing around with this calc, it seems that 6 months from now, everyone under 1 ghash will have to call it quits.

So why are you bolding "for profit". I am still mining and making quite a LOT of profit thankyou. YOU are the troll. Do some proper research before making such a "bold" statement. Idiot.
I'm guessing you've already paid off the cost of your hardware. If you've done that, or you're not buying hardware specifically for mining, it should work out to be profitable for users with decent ATI cards. Yes I've paid off the hardware from mining quite a while ago and in the very near future my energy costs will also be zero (see other thread on free UK solar panels). It's very profitable for me. I also hold quite a few bitcoins too and will speculate with those at a later date. |

Sunny Sale. :-) Well Sale is almost Cheshire, so of course down south in Sale you're going to get a lot more sun. My Mum's in Warrington, and she tells me it's like the South of France down there at the moment. Hahahaha I suppose so but Ardwick is only about 7 miles away? It's really hot here. Can't sleep in this heat. In Warrington it's even worse. lol |

I'm currently in Shanghai China, and its 30 degrees and it's midnight, but I can tell you without hesitation, it raining in Manchester (haven't you listened to The Smiths?) It's been sunny here for the last week or so. Rained for 5 minutes yesterday but was hot just like today. Very hot and humid right now. |

you could use a piezoelectric material to produce electricity from the force of the rain hitting it, although the forces would be pretty tiny and I wouldn't think anything would be efficient enough to get much if anything worthwhile. They are trying to do this in some countries on the motorways (ie. tyres hitting strips) but then they realised that this wears out tyres and the energy needed to replace was more that that gained. Cost the government less though and the end user more. So a small shift of wealth. lol |

I say wind turbines where it is windy  And solar panels in good weather Nah, I looked into trubines a while back and well.....they're a rubbish solution. 1.) You need planning permission to install them. 2.) The consumer ones are noisy and produce next to no energy compared to solar. 3.) The heavy duty ones are big and expensive and will not be allowed in a residential area. 4.) Can be dangerous as the blades have a tendency to go flying off (rarely but still happens sometimes) The other way is to use a Fresnel lens to convert water to steam and get that to turn a turbine, but not very economical yet and noisy too. Solar is the only viable consumer solution at the moment. Turbines are best installed in farms. If there is a river near your house you even cant put a wheel in. Not allowed. |

Im from Manchester too, however the energy stats reckon that Manchester is still good for cutting your energy bill in half as a minimum on a medium sized house. |

Nope, on this one you don't have to pay. They give you the option of them putting up the up-front costs so long as you have a south facing roof. The only thing is that you don't own the solar panels, they do. And they collect the cheque, however you get the electricity benefit and no maintenance costs or installation costs etc,...... A VERY good idea me thinks :-) |

많이 궁금합니다. ^^;;;
반갑습니다~~ rig은 윗분 서명 같은 애플컴퓨터가 아니라도 가능합니다. 일반적인 PC이면 mining이 가능하고요. 가능하면 AMD의 고성능 그래픽 카드일수록 잘 됩니다. 문제는 전기를 너무 많이 먹어서 가정집에서 돌리기에는 무리가 따릅니다. So is electricity more expensive than in the UK? |

I was suggesting exactly what I said, that newcomers should check out this more realistic calculator before they get into bitcoin mining for profit. If you plot price rises against difficulty you will see there is a price rise in line with difficulty rises, so even if you can only mine a lower amount of BTC, then the price you get for them is higher also. Are you sure about that? Maybe before Mai 2011 but now its more than questionable. Lets look at June to July difficulty and BTC price. We started out somewhere around 0.6 mill and now we are at 1,69 mil - this is more than 280% rise in difficulty. BTC was trading around 10 in the beginning of June and now we are at 13-14 USD. I see 30% rise (not bad at all). Forget the jump to 30, this had nothing to do with difficulty. If you look at the July data, picture is quite the opposite to your prediction. Difficulty jumped from 1.2 mil to 1,69 an this is almost 40% jump. At the same time, BTC has fallen from 17 to 13.5. Do be honest, this a bit strange. BTC needs more businesses to accept the coin and not more miners to flood the market. In long term, I am bullish and I believe that more businesses will starting to accept the coin. This need some serious PR work and selling. Well yes, except that there has been a few factors which have stagnated the price such as the MTGOX issue and the fact that trading fees have been waived over that period etc,. etc,... I really don't think you can take the latest month or two as valid examples. These have been strange months. I believe the price will re-adjust soon. I also think that due to namecoins being more profitable in the short term, this will reduce the difficulty of Bitcoins temporarily also (even if it's only the once). Over time we will see what happens but to simply put in a calculator where the price remains fixed for all eternity is not an accurate reflection in my opinion. I am holding quite a lot of Bitcoins (not selling) as I feel that they will rise in price soon. So although my profit may be (x) if I sell now, it will not be (x) later down the line, so you can argue that mining may be more profitable than the current price indicates if the value rises at some point. If the price rises, I get benefit for all previously mined coins as I'm holding on. The reverse is also true. |

This IS a basic mining rig. The 5870's can be bought for £120 if you know where to get them and happen to be the best value for money at that price. I used to have 5830's. They are currently £75 in the UK. But let's get serious here, this is a very basic mining rig. I know people who are running banks of 5970's using 20+ machines in Russia. The 5970's are not value for money (well for me anyway), but depending on your contacts / job etc, it is viable for some people due to how cheaply they can get their hands on the cards. Now each of those machines are pushing 2400 MH . That's serious stuff. Anything less than say 1000MH from a machine is simply playing at it. Let's face it even at that speed you're not going to get much return. So I stand by what I say, a couple (2) of 5870's is simply playing at it and basic. |
