1  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to get Casascius coins graded? on: March 15, 2024, 05:33:26 PM
I have some coins that I was thinking about having graded, but I have a few questions.  My coins have just been sitting in a box in a safe, rarely seeing light for over a decade.  They are not mint, but certainly in great shape.  Is it worth getting them graded?  I also remember reading that some services no longer grade these coins.  So what are the ones that do grade them still, and which is the best to go with?  Can I hand deliver them to the facility?  I would be pretty nervous shipping such a high value item, even with insurance.  Is there anything regarding grading that I need to be aware of?

Depends on what your long-term goal is for these coins/collectibles.
I prefer my coins graded/slabbed to give them more protection and know that they have been authenticated.

ANACS no longer grades physical cryptos. They stopped in about 2019.

NGC is currently grading physical cryptos, but seems very limited to only Casascius coins at the moment

PCGS is currently grading physical cryptos, but only way to submit is to mail-in to them or drop off in person at a coin show

ICG is currently grading physical cryptos, they DO allow walk-in service if you call ahead and set it up with them.

Cost can vary from $25 up to $150+ depending on the service tier/turn-around time and then also the value of said crypto collectible.

Due to the value of certain collectibles like Casascius and similar, I would no longer recommend shipping these items.

Insurance will not cover the value of the digital load of loaded collectibles. This is similar to shipping a gift-card.

Thank you so much!  This is exactly what I was looking for!

The fastest way to turn into cold hard cash would be to offer the coin at a discount for an in-person exchange. Considering the current price, I would think the discount would have to be significant for someone to travel to Ohio (maybe get lucky and find someone local) for an in person cash buy. You mentioned counterfeit...well if you want cash, that is certainly a risk (Bitcoin fixes this Wink. Maybe meet at a bank and have it wired to your account while you are there together? Maybe someone else has a better suggestion?  I'll officially offer you $40k for it and be there in 1 day?

The second fastest way to turn into cash would be to peel the coin and send to your preferred crypto exchange and convert to dollars there. Then withdraw the dollars to your connected bank account. This will take 1-3 days at best if you are setup properly. It doesn't sound like you even have an exchange setup yet tho, so it could take longer. You will likely have some sort of withdrawal limits placed on a new account. If you decide to peel, here is a good write-up from Krogoth...https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5303860.0

A less technical way to redeem is to use a Ballet wallet, but I'm assuming you would need to order one first and then wait for shipping (adding more time to the process). Don't forget about redeeming the forks. HK8 shows you how to do all that here... https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5274279.msg55152981#msg55152981

Another way would be to sell it at auction on here and using an escrow, for a fee. And you would still have BTC to convert to cash afterwards, so you might want to get that process started and open a crypto exchange account that you can link your bank account to. If you don't have one already that is.

Was no one interested when you posted before?...https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5315671.msg56301351#msg56301351
It would also help if you posted a pic with your username, the date, and the coin all in the same pic.

Thank you very much for your reply.  I will probably go ahead and get the process rolling for setting up an exchange account in case I cannot find a buyer.  Is there one that is better than others for liquidating BTC?  Last time I listed it for sale, I had a few people message me, one tried to scam me, and nobody ended up buying it.  I will grab a new pic with the date later today.

As the title states, I need to sell a physical coin ASAP, but I have no idea how to begin to do so safely.  I am wanting to get fiat/cash/USD for it.  Is it possible to sell via bank transfer?  Is that safe?  I have paypal, but I know how easy it is for scammers to reverse paypal payments.  Are bank transfers safer?  What about specific banks.  Does anyone know if Key bank is bitcoin friendly?  Would they even know the money was from a bitcoin sale?  Would the amount of the transfer cause any problems because it is so large?  Would it just be better to try to find someone local and trade case for it?  How do I know their cash is not counterfeit?  How would I even make an in person trade like that safely?  And how would I even go about finding someone local?  I tried signing up for localbitcoins, but is seems I cannot create an account because of my location(Ohio).  And even if I could, It seems like they don't have a way to list physical coins.  Sorry for all the questions, but I am getting desperate, and this just seems like it is impossible to do, and do safely without getting killed, or scammed.   I really don't want to peel this to redeem the BTC.  I think that would be a shame since the amount of these that are unpeel goes down every day.  It would make me feel like I was destroying a painting.  I also don't really want to sell it for BTC because I don't have a wallet of any kind.  Never have.  I am super intimidated after reading all the stories about people making a simple mistake, and then "POOF", all their money is gone.  I don't want that to be me, and I really need to make sure I have these funds, and soon.  Any and all help would be seriously appreciated!  Sorry again for rambling.

I purchased this in 2013 or 2014, and it has been stored in my safe in a climate controlled room since then.

EDIT:  PLEASE READ.  IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE COMPLETING A TRANSACTION INSIDE A SECURE LOCATION (A BANK), THEN THERE IS NO NEED TO PM ME.
