1  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Frozen address, I think on: April 16, 2014, 02:27:01 AM
I have Electrum 1.9.8 now. And now I am having trouble getting connected. All other issues still in place and unsolved.

What operating system are you using? Windows of some flavour?

Try selecting a different electrum server.

Try entering the ip address of the server instead of the domain name. You can lookup the IP here: http://network-tools.com/.

For example 88.198.241.196 for electrum.be or  144.76.99.209 for ecdsa.net

I'm using Mac OSX. But I sorted it all out after much research. That Bitcoin is simply gone. I was misreading the addresses. Something happened and I wouldn't be able to figure it out. I am too busy with other things and do not follow all the updates and information like I should in order to be well versed on the BTC scene.

I found out that all hell was going to break loose with MyGox right about the time they went into lock-down. I lost another 7 BTC there. Now that I'm all cleaned out of BTC, I'm going to have to take a sideline interest in it only. Hope the techies can help get it all sorted out so that the rest of us laymen can trust the whole thing.

Thanks for your help. If I had any BTC left I'd tip you a bit for your help, but I don't, so I am unable to.

If you freeze an address its balance is NOT deducted from the total you see on the bottom left. Also there is a visual cue in a frozen address i.e. its colour turns to light-blue/cyan.

It sounds to me like you have a really old version of electrum. Usually it creates 5 addresses by default and more each time you receive money. So if you have just 2 addresses and no freeze option in the right click context menu then it sounds like an older version. What version of electrum are you using? The version number usually shows up in the window title bar but if it's not there you can find it under help menu > about

Another question. You say one of your addresses has a balance of 1BTC. How did you come by that information? Does it says so in the electrum window or did you look up the address on a site like blockchain.info?

Thanks. I'm using Electrum 1.7.3. The color of the address is different. I'm color-blind so I don't know what color it is. I sent the BTC in question there myself from another wallet.

Click on the green/red icon on the lower right corner of the electrum window and choose to connect to electrum.be server. See if it displays the correct balance now.

If that doesn't work. Make a copy of your electrum directory for backup purposes:

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Electrum#Wallet_File

In older versions the file is wallet.dat in your electrum folder.

Then download and upgrade to the latest electrum version which is 1.9.8:

My wallet shows a zero balance at lower left. It is encrypted. One of my addresses (there are only two, I don't use this wallet very often) still has a balance of one BTC. That one BTC should be the balance on this wallet.

Does this mean the address is frozen? If not what else could be going on?

Any help would be great.

A bit about me so you go easy on me: I am not a tech-type, I'm relatively new to BTC in use. Regardless of my slight ignorance in use of BTC I do understand quite a bit about BTC from an economic and monetary theory angle. I am someone who likes the technology quite a bit, but sees some of its pitfalls in really taking off in the fact that it is not as easy for some people, like me, to understand from a technical perspective. Not everyone is, nor cares to be, a total techie. I am one of them. I want this technology to take off. But being a people and relationship type, I think it has a long way to go. I say all of this because I'd appreciate any real assistance anyone might offer without some of the negative attitudes I've experienced in situations like this in the past.

Thank you.

Trying to go easy on you here.

It would help if you at least mentioned which wallet you are using:

  • Armory
  • Bitcoin-Qt
  • Electrum
  • MultiBit
  • blockchain.info
  • Mycellium
  • Something else I haven't thought to mention yet?

I can make some assumptions taking the context of your question into account, but rather than risk useless and misleading advice, I'll wait for confirmation of which wallet you are asking about.

I'm using Electrum.

Go to the receive tab, right click that address and select "freeze" / "unfreeze".
Then restart Electrum. Does that fix it?

I don't get "freeze/unfreeze" when I do this. I get these options:

"copy to clipboard"
"QR code"
"edit label"
"private key"
"sign message"

Sorry, forgot that crucial detail: Electrum is the wallet I'm referring to. And I'm asking about an address being frozen, not the entire wallet.

Thanks again.
