4  Other / Beginners & Help / Is it possible for mt. gox or tradehill to scam you whenever you trade? on: July 26, 2011, 03:00:15 PM
Hi,

I just had a thought that sounds pretty obvious, but maybe there is an obvious answer which I don't see. Huh

So, imagine such a situation:

The best sell BTC order on an exchange site is 10USD/BTC. I put in a buy BTC @11USD/BTC, and am counting on it to be fulfilled at 10USD/BTC, because there is such a sell offer.
Now, the exchange sees those two offers, and instead of matching them, they buy from the other guy at 10USD/BTC, and sell me for 10.8USD/BTC. And then they say: a dark pool buy order came in at 10.2USD/BTC, and we matched the 10USD/BTC sell order with this, while your buy @11USD/BTC order got fulfilled by a dark pool sell order at 10.8USD/BTC.

Is this possible, or am I missing something? And if it is, then how do you know if this is not happening all the time?

Thanks,

5  Other / Beginners & Help / EUR->BTC order executed as EUR->USD->BTC? on: July 22, 2011, 10:37:25 AM
Hi,

I've got a question because I'm wondering if it's better to fund my exchange account with EUR or USD.

So, suppose I fund my account with EUR, and create a 'buy' order, e.g 'I'll buy 10BTC at 12EUR/BTC'.

Do I have to wait for a 'sell BTC at 12EUR/BTC' order to appear, or if there is a 'sell BTC at 16USD/BTC' order, my 'buy' order will get executed and EUR exchanged to USD so that the seller gets paid in USD?

If this is not the case, and I'd have to wait for a 'sell BTC for EUR' order, this would decrease the probability of me buying, because there would be much less 'sell for EUR' offers that 'sell for USD'?

Thanks in advance for any insight on this.

6  Other / Beginners & Help / How are orders executed on mtgox and other exchanges? on: July 03, 2011, 10:18:55 PM
Hi,

I'm new to trading bitcoins, and trying to work out some kind of a strategy, similar to trading shares...

I would like to set up a few "buy" orders on different exchanges (mtgox, bitomat), which would not execute right away, but when there is a suitable sell offer.
So I would offer to pay a bit less than the best sell offer is asking for, counting on the price to fall.

I have a few questions regarding this:

1. If I set up an offer e.g. "I'll buy 2BTC for at most $9/BTC", and at some point an offer appears: "sell 1BTC for $9/BTC", will my "buy" offer be executed partially or not at all? What if a "sell 1BTC for $8.9/BTC" comes in?
2. How does the exchange decide, which buy offer to match with a given sell offer? Is it oldest first? E.g. say there are 10 offer "buy for $9/BTC", and one sell offer comes in. Which of the buy offers will be fulfilled?

If anybody can cast any light on the questions above, I'd be grateful.

Thanks,
Bitboy999
