there is a really nice desktop gadget, I think its call Everest.  It displays cpu and gpu loads and temps.

Yea at current difficultly and the way things are going, I dont think its a good idea to solo mine, unless you have 4ghash or more.

looks likes its really good if you are a 24/7 miner
