Have you considered using an Electrum seed passphrase instead? It would prevent you from having to re-use the same address and it would allow you to create a "watch-only" wallet with Electrum or with https://coldmonitor.com
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are newcommers to bitcoin laggards or what? on: May 10, 2014, 06:26:17 AM
Bitcoin will hit the ditch of history pretty soon.
Why:

Because it is infested with scam. I am not talking about theoretical scam, but real-life.
Examples:
1. more than 50% of miners manufacturers scam their customers-a fact.
2. mining pools are constantly off line due to multiple sustained attacks, putting mining revenue in jeopardy
3. hashing speed undergoes gigantic fluctuations, suggesting a possibility that large unused hashing potential exist that could be used for the 51% attcak that would render bitcoins useless
4. someone (early adopters) is constantly selling, resulting in a 6 mo downtrend.
7. governments are actively undermining bitcoin-china

Why are you participating in this forum if you think "Bitcoin will hit the ditch of history pretty soon.". Seems a bit strange...
3  Other / Off-topic / Re: It's official! The Bitcoin Foundation has an accused pedophile on its board. on: May 10, 2014, 02:18:11 AM
I think we should pick our fights and the Bitcoin Foundation's fight is Bitcoin. Maybe Brock's name is being unjustly dragged in the mud but unfortunately, it won't matter to journalists who want to damage Bitcoin's image or to Joe Sixpack watching Fox News. Similar to law firms, PR organisations should not be concerned about what's morally "right" or "wrong". The only thing that should matter to them is defending their client (i.e. Bitcoin) in the court of public opinion. Charlie Shrem understood that which is why he resigned shortly after his arrest. It doesn't matter whether the foundation is "right" to support Brock if in the end it fails at its goal of promoting Bitcoin. Therefore, I disagree that the foundation should "stand by Brock's side" like some people here have suggested... let's make a Brock Foundation for that.

It seems it's working now for some reason  Huh
5  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANN] ColdMonitor: a wallet for true HODLers (early preview) on: May 08, 2014, 10:31:23 AM
Bump! ColdMonitor is now in beta testing as an app on the Android Play Store. Shoot me an email if you'd like to try the app: hello@coldmonitor.com

It seems my watchlist is always empty no matter what I do. Is this feature broken?
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Prepaid credit card for Bitcoin? on: May 08, 2014, 06:32:53 AM
Hi all... I was wondering if there are any service that would let me buy a prepaid credit card online? I don't actually need the physical card as I only need it for a one time 30$ payment. Any service you recommend?

Edit: oops, I think I should have posted this in Marketplace.. Maybe a mod can move it?

Hi tmu,

Thanks a lot for reporting this bug! I believe I have fixed it, could you confirm it is working now? PS: coldmonitor is a bit slow for transactions with many txins/txouts but we're working on that. Also, any feature you'd like us to implement?

Cheers,
Max
10  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoind / cold storage how it's work on: May 07, 2014, 05:38:45 PM
Cold storage just means storing your private keys (wallet) on a non-networked media (paper, usb key, etc.). You can do that with any Bitcoin client but clients which support deterministic keys make it easier. I recommend you create an Electrum wallet and write down its seed phrase on a piece of paper and save its "master public key" somewhere on your computer. You can then delete the wallet from your computer and put that piece of paper in a safe place (and possibly make copies of it in different locations).

You can then use the "master public key" to create a watch only wallet and receive transactions. Even if your computer gets hacked, a master public key does not have the power to spend anything, it can only watch for transactions.

A bit of self promotion: I've built a service which allows people to watch their cold wallet online (Electrum Master Public Keys are supported): https://coldmonitor.com. One planned feature is to send SMS notifications when transactions happen in your wallet.

Bumped! Improved wallet UI. It's now possible to filter by address and get transaction details by clicking on a transaction. Also, fixed a couple of bugs (large wallets can now load - although slowly. Still haven't implemented server side paging/filtering).

Armory wallet support on the way.

Just implemented a currency switcher in the footer so you can view your wallet in BTC, mBTC or USD (latest price from bitstamp).

13  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANN] ColdMonitor: a wallet for true HODLers (early preview) on: May 04, 2014, 10:43:12 AM
- Better UI (display the list of transactions in a smarter way, awareness of change addresses, etc.)

Another update today Smiley The wallet show now display transactions in the same way as the Electrum client. Much better to understand what's going on now.
14  Economy / Services / Re: Hiring: Devs who can build block-explorers on: May 03, 2014, 06:58:07 PM
I'm sorry but it's simply not worth it for me to write a proposal without knowing who you are, what your budget is, what your requirements are, etc. I have written a block explorer internally for https://ColdMonitor.com and have the required knowledge / experience to make this happen but I need more info. If you are really serious about this, I'll help you write a requirements document for you for 1 BTC that you can send to potential developers. If I had to bid on this project without any further information, I'd say around 3 months work (or ~24,000$).
15  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: A FANTASTIC idea for a serious Developer. on: May 03, 2014, 06:01:56 PM
You haven't said anything really convincing except that you had an "idea". There is a sea of people with fantastic ideas. The funny things is that you make it sound like whoever you chose to work for you will be oh so lucky. I'm sorry but that's a bit offensive considering that you haven't even said what you are bringing to the table. (PS: if all you have is an idea I can guarantee that no serious developer will be interested)

If you want to get serious replies though, try to elaborate on this idea and explain what you are looking for exactly (an employee? a co-founder? a freelancer?).

BUMP! I have just implemented basic user registration/login and ability to save wallet but I have to admit I haven't done much testing yet.
17  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANN] ColdMonitor: a wallet for true HODLers (early preview) on: May 01, 2014, 09:44:00 PM
(Wow, a reply and a positive one at that!)

> Do you plan on charging for the service? And specifically for SMS/email alerts?

I haven't given much thought about that yet. I do plan to find a way to generate revenue eventually (at least to keep the lights on and keep my stomach full if I'm lucky) but I'm not sure what form it will take yet. I think I will probably go with a freemium type model: a free basic version and a paid version with additional features. Or have a free web app and sell a paid mobile app? Or make it free for wallets with less than X BTC and paid for wallets with more than X BTC? Or have everything free but charge for API usage? Just run on donations and hope that BTC will go to the moon?

Those are just some ideas off the top of my head. Are SMS alerts something you'd be willing to pay for? Otherwise, are there any set of features that you think would be worth paying for? In any case, I'll give you a free coupon because you are a self proclaimed poor developer and you were the first to post here Smiley

Thanks for the post by the way, really cheered me up!

TL;DR: https://www.coldmonitor.com

Hola!

A few weeks ago, I started wondering what I could to help improve the often poor security practices of Bitcoin users and companies. I realized that people typically make tradeoffs between usability and security and wondered if I could help by making a good security practice, namely the use of cold wallets (wallets which are not stored on a networked device), more convenient to use.

People already use "watch only" wallets today through various means but I felt none of the solutions out there were focused on that specific use case.

So I started learning about Bitcoin's protocol and wrote a "watch only" wallet. It's still very much a work in progress but currently supports wallets made up of a list of addresses or an Electrum Master Public Key.

Here's a few features I have in mind for the future:

- Better UI (display the list of transactions in a smarter way, awareness of change addresses, etc.)
- Registration/login: ability to save wallets
- Receive email / SMS alerts when transactions occur
- API and web hooks which let users execute specific actions when specific transactions occur
- Ability to create new transactions in order to sign them offline
- Support for BIP32 HD wallets
- Some nice visualizations and graphs
- Your suggestions

Anyways, I'm posting this here to get some early feedback from the community and make sure I'm going in the right direction. Let me know your (constructive) criticism and keep in mind that this still very much a work in progress! (Please be nice, I've put a lot of sweat into this although it's still pretty basic)

Try it out! https://www.coldmonitor.com
