1  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANN: BITMAIN has Tested Its 28nm Bitcoin Mining Chip BM1382 on: June 27, 2014, 08:56:21 PM

Just make sure there is nothing flammable near by if you are going to do that long term.  I have seen this go very bad.

I am running 3 S1 on a 1200 watt PS Silverstone Tek ATX12V/EPS12V 1200Watts 80+ Gold
power to the wall is 1100 watts.

All of my S1 are over clocked to 400 giving me on average 200GH. I did add a second fan to every S1.

Ya, I did ensure they were not near flammable items and added cooling.  No one likes an electric fire.  I did end up re-adjusting their clock speed to pull less power.

I dont exactly think 'stupid cheap' fits well in this situation as both brands are generally reliable even with their 'value' PSUs and still not the cheapest option.  Additionally in the long term a higher rated Platinum PSU running closer to 50% load would be more cost efficient.  This was more a novice, 'I wonder if this will work' moment(regardless to the consequences of blowing any PSU's)

I don't know specifically about the CX750, but with most Corsair PSU's I have used this would not work.  I know it's not advisable, but it just plain may not work at all.  It seems if I load a PSU with multiple miners I need to be at least 10 -15% under the rated wattage or the PSU will just turn on and then off as if overloaded.  Sometimes this is solvable by starting one device, letting it warm up, then adding the second.   But there seem to be safety mechanisms to prevent you from pulling too much juice.  I always try and be 100-200w under the PSU rating.  Then I don't have issues.  For what it's worth....

I've managed to run two overclocked S1's on a Corsair CX750M no problem although its not advisable.   I've also had good luck with the corsair HX750, and the EVGA SuperNOVA 750G2.

I just hope I have the same result with the S3's. - Edit: When we eventually get to underclocking them.

Yea, I am currently talking to someone from the FaceBook page, BITMAINtech.  It looks to be the most legit one, however; the person I am messaging just requested I send them 1.057 BTC to a BTC address they just provided.

.97 for the S3
.087 for Shipping to US

Which I'm not going to go.

I requested that they create an order for me on the main Bitmain website under my profile and then I would submit a payment.

Yup Scam.. /report and move on.

On one of the many FB pages...

https://www.facebook.com/pages/BITMAINtech/1445280845724880

Says Pre-Sales, however I am skeptical because by my count there are currently 3 'Bitmain' FB pages and at one time one was hacked by scammers

I like what you did there.  Do you know what the PSU is drawing from the wall?

Based on everything i've seen and calculated, S3 should be priced at MAXIMUM 0.85-0.9 BTC
Anything else-it will NOT make any BTC return and this is a fact.

What I think you fail to see is that that price doesn't always matter for the bitcoin hobbyist who just wants to buy a miner, an S3 in this situation. I'm sure the ROI people appreciate your speculation, though.

You clearly only see miners as an ROI object (most do), you need to understand not everybody is like you, though. Remember buying something just for the sake of buying an item? Example, people buy go-karts to tinker with, that's their money and their right to do whatever they want with it. Who are you to shun people away just because their product may not ROI? I appreciate you making this aware to people who are looking for ROI and do not understand ROI.

I have overpaid for a miner that will not ROI because I wanted the miner. I wanted to play with it, tweak and do what nerds do. So yes, I will pay for a small loss for the experience of getting to have a miner to tinker with.

Waldohoover, you hit a good point, but I do not think that the bitcoin hobbyist is their largest market share.  There is also an overwhelming focus on $/GH within the community, regardless of which side of the coin you come up on, you can see it prevalent in all the manufactures advertisement/announcement posts on this forum.  Based off this it would lead one to believe that even the hobbyist wants a good $/GH coupled with low power consumption.

Besides wouldn't the true bitcoin hobbyist be wrapped up in the open source AM project right now?  Wouldn't the S3 just be a side note until it comes down from its wildly overpriced introduction?  Not all hobbyists are made of bitcoin either eh?

Some interesting statistics...on BTCGuild...

"AntMiner   278,924.59 GH/s" ...

Last weekend was hovering about 60-70,000 GH/s ... Grin

S3 production going up...I guess...500 new units mining in the farm...100 S3 a day... Wink

Just watching...

ZiG

With this hashpower they doing 10 BTC a day. Anyone still thinks that gear is not  overpriced?

+1...

Trying to explain this FACT for ages here... Wink

Edit...:   10 ( Ten ) S3 paid for ...per day ...@ 1 BTC ...production cost probable 0.5 BTC...make it 20 (twenty ) S3 covered by BitMain per day...Whatever they decide to charge US is PURE PROFIT...Capisco... Huh

Totally agree.. said this a couple pages ago - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=656461.msg7416372#msg7416372

I really would like to see Bitmain up their RoI % for miners who buy their gear and spread the wealth around a little more but I doubt that will happen.  Especially with all these high price points people are throwing out there.

-Edit: I wouldnt be surprised if Bitmain read the community feedback here and used it to help set the highest price possible.
8  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: LKETC Dragon Price Increase? on: June 20, 2014, 07:48:35 PM
I think they saw Bitmain's price on the S2 and figured they would still be under them by 100 bucks or so.. unless you have a coupon in which case they are 300 up.

I don't understand all the love you guys show for Bitmain. Yes, they have delivered. No, their price has been reasonable, but not good for us miners.

Donno, my last few S1s that haven't reached breakeven will do so very soon (and that's with paying Swedish VAT on them) My first batch are sitting at around 20-25% profit in BTC (what more could you reasonably ask for?)

Rograz, now that Bitmain has become an established company due to the support of miners and what appears to be a good business plan.  I think it would be reasonable to ask for 35-45% RoI for miners(market dependent and before VAT).

I suspect based off of the miners I have received, and posts I have read of other forum users that Bitmain doesn't just stress test(QC) units before they ship but actually uses them until they ship, then ship them as 'new' at a 20-50%(decreasing as the hash rate increases) markup on their manufacturing cost.  Thus netting them miner and markup(double return) of 60-80%(guesstimate).  Granted this is just speculation(like most of this thread) but it is by no means a crazy leap of logic.

I also don't begrudge them this business model, I think its a smart way to RoI, however I would like to see slightly more on our(miners) end of things.

11  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: AntMiner S2 1TH/s Miner Batch 4, sales price changes daily, now $2121 per unit on: June 18, 2014, 02:52:30 AM
I'm a positive 6/6 on my S1's and from my lurking on the forums it seems that the lemon risk has been reduced since the earlier batches.  Truth is whenever you order something from over seas or across continents there is risk for damage but its generally acceptable and not excessive.

As for me I think I will take the leap on the S2 soon or the next batch for Dragons, price dependent.
