1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: NEW TOOL: Compare the results of doing DCA in Bitcoin vs Stocks on: March 05, 2024, 01:21:01 PM
You could have shared an image of the tool however I took the risk and here's what it says if you invest $250 every month for the past 5 years vs S&P500. (311.94%   Profit)

I have few suggestions, reduce the number of clicks I need to make. Just show me the chart/values with the default values.
Also, you can have the options on the left and the numbers on the right. (Left for Form Inputs, Right for Results).

Thanks. Yeah, somehow I didn't think of an image *facepalm*. Appreciate the help and the suggestions, I'll keep some of them in mind as improvements. I think most people are worried now about going to the moon instead of comparing the performance of stocks  Grin but eventually bitcoin will stop going up... right?
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / NEW TOOL: Compare the results of doing DCA in Bitcoin vs Stocks on: March 04, 2024, 02:41:27 PM
I have a lot of friends who are into stonks and have no clue how bitcoin works (oH itS sO VoLatile!) so me and a Bitcoiner friend decided to create this tool where you can input the DCA amount, frequency and compare bitcoin vs stocks.

Check it out → bitcoinvsstocks.com

It's free, open source and verifiable (links to Github repos are on the FAQ section).

The most amazing part to me is that even when we started working on it last year, Bitcoin was already much better almost every single stock in the list. Now it's literally DESTROYING them.

And now that the price is up, my nocoiner friends are obviously finally interested in bitcoin  Grin Grin Grin

Feedback is welcome! We're working on a search function to compare against the most common 7,000 stocks.

About the images, got it. I'm not too fond of forums / social media but I do enjoy the conversation here.

It seems Coinkite beat me to the calendar, this is exactly what I had in mind, only much nicer that I would probably be able to achieve:

https://bitcoin.holiday/

I'll be a bit busy in the next coming months, but I think I will stick to riddles / challenges. Originally I thought to make it a 0.01 BTC per month thing, but I'm in a tricky spot with work right now. A few sponsors saw the riddle and got interested in the idea, so that's kind of cool Smiley

It's incomplete, but this should get you started: Bitcoin history, a fact for each day!

This thread is pretty cool though. Lots of information out there.

I hate Reddit for this exact "mob rule" mentality that it has. But if you link to your old puzzle and this thread, then that should convince anyone that you are for real, having already given away 0.01 BTC. (Thanks again! Smiley)

Indeed, I'm not a big fan of social media, but if the riddle is well done I think it will generate traction, in the end if things are done well I think reddit is king, unfortunately no post will live more than a few days so I think I should just post the riddle when it's ready. As opposed to here, where I can warm everyone to be ready.

I was mostly afraid my first riddle would get me banned from most places as I could just be one more guy trying to trick people, so I didn't use any clickbaity titles or anything. Got less traffic but at least no bans.
4  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Crossword on: May 29, 2022, 02:08:57 AM
Here's a feedback: Make the next game available using a countdown. I figured out there's a bitcoin crossword a little late, and couldn't find the time. It'll be interesting to have some Lightning invoice exchanging this time.  Wink

Yeah, the countdown idea would be good. But I don't have a big channel to let people know that the challenge is starting. Maybe a simple optin form on my website? I could also post the announcement of when the riddle starts on the new post I guess. Like a few days before and then a T minus 24h announcement.

I could also put a counter of when my next riddle is going online now, on say handsomelatino.com/#next-riddle, but that would require people checking in often.

Problem with this is that Reddit users are gonna flame me, but I can always just post when it starts on reddit and give you guys a small heads up. People here can vouch that I am legit and not some random scammer Smiley

Happy to provide some feedback. I'll also deliberately not attempt to solve the next one (or at least that's what I'll claim when I get stuck on it Tongue) so someone else can win.

Those two I did happen to know off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are many other important dates I don't know. The only other notable June/July date which occurs immediately is the second halving, which was in July 2016. I'm sure there are plenty of resources out there which collect historical dates or create a bitcoin timeline which you could pull data from.

Sure, I might PM you when the date is closer.

The calendar won't be a big project or anything, just something simple for people to have a reference to, regarding to Bitcoin itself, not to the political or market value where there is plenty of info.

BTW unrelated, I've seen some posts that contain images, is it enough to use the img shortcode? Testing...

5  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Crossword on: May 26, 2022, 04:36:08 AM
Happy to hear the feedback you guys had and even happier to hear that the UI was sleek -- my job as a software developer focuses on UI/UX, so it was an interesting experiment.

If you guys wanna stick, I will be posting a few ideas about my next riddle here, so I can also get some feedback. I have two prototypes with Bitcoin done, but the next one might be based on the Lightning Network, so that I can distribute more rewards to more players. Make sure to have your Lightning powered wallets ready to receive sats.

I tried a variety of seven letter words first as I mentioned above, as I figured that would have the least number of possibilities. Managed to fit in another couple of words, but nothing that made sense as a "simple sentence". Then I read your bio, and figured that actually we are very similar and you hold in high regard many of the same things I do - I am hugely outspoken on these forums in terms of protecting your privacy and not trusting third parties. So then I went back to the clues, and with Genesis Block in bold I decided to start trying different words from the message within. I tried "bailout" first, but again, couldn't find anything that made sense. So then I tried "banks", which made the next word obviously "are". From there various attempts at "banks are ... enemies", before landing on the right answer.

....

How about the anniversary of this tweet: https://nitter.net/rockerest/status/91885405368098816 Tongue
Or maybe the anniversary of the first bitcoin faucet: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=183.0

I just spent the last few days reading many of your posts and replies. Very interesting and impressive to see, the more I read the happier I was that you took the bounty!

Those two dates sound great, let me see if I can make it on time. BTW do you know those dates off the top of your head? I was thinking of a small project to make a "Bitcoin calendar" where people can see when was the time different events happened. I've seen timelines with years and all but the dates would be cool. Kind of like calendars with the name of saints but instead with bitcoin events, if you're interested let me know. No bounty on this one probably, just a cool project to support historical pieces of information.
6  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Crossword on: May 23, 2022, 11:35:42 AM
I just won. Grin

I'll wait until the transaction confirms before I reveal the answer. Tried various combinations of Satoshi, Bitcoin, January (genesis block) as the seven letter word to no success. Ended up clicking on OP's other site - https://handsomelatino.com - read the little blurb he wrote about himself at the top, which gave me a clue. Specifically this phrase: "savings had effectively become an increasing liability."

Great puzzle, great fun, and thanks for the bitcoin!

Edit: The answer is "Banks are not your friends".

Congratulations! Wow, that was fast, 20 hours since published. It feels bittersweet that the hard work of so many evenings is gone, but as my wife said, better than people had interest than if no one cared and it faded away on the internet.

I'm also curious as to what was the clue or first word that you found out! Impressive work, and well, I'm happy you're probably the first person to ever read my bio!

I guess you will need to create new crossword and make it a bit more harder next time.
Can you confirm o_e_l_e_o won reward, and make change on website?

OP signed a message which you can verify. I've added since that it's been solved by o_e_l_e_o -- but only if you enter the words Wink

I was not planning on releasing any clues, but decided to do so because I think it would have been way too hard and no one would have cared. Unless it's the year 2030 and 1 million sats becomes $50,000 or something crazy; by that time someone would have brute forced it (someone on reddit already tried all 33 million combinations of BIP-39 words yesterday).

Not to worry -- my fifth project and its reward are already on the works. Will need to find a special date in June / July related to Bitcoin or the financial world, so I'm open to suggestions.

Finally, there was a hidden hint on the project's icon (favicon.svg), which I was hoping someone would find.
7  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Crossword on: May 23, 2022, 03:02:28 AM
UPDATE #1:

I have added a few clues on the crossword page (refresh to see them) -- will add more if needed!

Also, someone has generously added a small tip on top of the total reward.  Grin

It looks very good and I appreciate your made it with open source code, but some more hints and help would be greatly appreciated.
Should we consider this crossword has anything related with Pizza Day and Laszlo Hanyecz?

I would suggest if you can make website with dark theme switch similar like on your other website btc2fiat.me Wink

Initially I got lazy to program dark mode, but definitely it was needed. It's done  Wink let me know what you think!

Going with the BIP-39 theory, I get:
...
Too many permutations for confetti!

From the new clues added to the crossword:

No knowledge about the BIP-39 wordlist is needed or was used as a reference for this crossword.
8  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Crossword on: May 22, 2022, 02:40:04 PM
Any hints?  Wink

First hint

Edit: It's night time here, I'm off to bed. Good luck. More clues to come when I wake up.
9  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Crossword on: May 22, 2022, 01:35:22 PM
What language is the crossword puzzle in? English?

English, yes.

Does it show the decrypted solution automatically once the correct words are entered? If so: that's genius!

Yes, automatically, since only the right key would produce a valid message. It even throws confetti at you Grin
10  Bitcoin / Project Development / Bitcoin Crossword on: May 22, 2022, 12:40:19 PM
Hi everyone, my third fourth Bitcoin project this year is a crossword puzzle:

bitcoin-crossword.com

If you solve it, the words will decrypt a message which contains a 0.01 BTC or One Million Sats Bounty that you can sweep. Code is open source and the encrypted message is open to the public.

Took me a few months to finalize and I decided to launch it today, Pizza Day, in honor of the legendary Laszlo Hanyecz who bought large pizzas and enjoyed them with no regrets.

Feel free to discuss potential solutions. I will be releasing a few clues if the puzzle remains unsolved.

Enjoy your pizza!
11  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: New project: btc2fiat.me -- a lightweight btc to fiat converter on: May 10, 2022, 03:26:18 AM
Hi everyone, I decided to go for the regular 8 digits, now you cannot enter more digits and I fixed the bugs regarding the numbers.

If you input say 2800 USD, it will still show as "0.090 BTC", but with the bottom the 8-digit amount will show:

0.090 BTC
0.09007560 BTC

Here's more details on the tiny release:
https://github.com/handsomelatino/btc2fiat/releases/tag/v2.1

The interaction may feel a bit messy now, but I still prefer to see approximate values such as "13.2 BTC" instead of "13.212311200 BTC". Please experiment with it on your daily usage and let me know, I'm open to suggestions. The BTC/Sats Eur/Usd toggle will change behavior of these numbers quite a bit.

If I select Sats, and write 1, the conversion shows 0.0000000100 BTC.

Why do you show those 2 extra zeroes? It made me think that I could go down to millisats (lightning supports that), but the minimum is 1 sat.

Thanks, this was a bug. It should never show more than 8 precision digits for BTC now.

I like how fast btc2fiat.me loads and that it has no trackers.

One improvement / addition suggestion, would be a completely static version, that lets you pass a URL parameter.
It would be even more lightweight and require no JavaScript.

Let's say I go to https://btc2fiat.me/?btc=0.5, it would display a static version of the current webpage, with the amount set to 0.5BTC.
And https://btc2fiat.me/?usd=50.0 would display the exchange rate for 50USD.

My motivation for this idea is: https://plaintextsports.com/

Hey, yeah the plan is to be able to use non-JS but for calculators where you expect immediate input that becomes tricky. I still think it would be cool to have that support. In fact plaintextsports.com is using JS for its toggle light-dark mode.

Also, although still not free of Javascript, you can actually run queries which reduce the number of parameters you use, in fact I have a Chrome shortcut that does this:

Code:
https://btc2fiat.me/?q=%s

This lets you run queries such as:

https://btc2fiat.me/?q=0.5+btc
https://btc2fiat.me/?q=200+sats&cur=eur
https://btc2fiat.me/?q=10+usd

So in the browser, I just type "BTC" (tab) and then whatever is my search "200 usd" and it will show up the value right away. Might be a good idea to show others how it can be used but don't know what is the best way to achieve that.

Thanks!
12  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BTC2FIAT.me: a lightweight Bitcoin to Fiat converter on: May 06, 2022, 03:07:50 AM
Thanks for all the suggestions!

New version is out at https://btc2fiat.me (hard refresh might be required):

Looks like this →

  • Euro/USD support
  • Refetch exchange after one minute of inactivity

(I decided to not go for automatic refreshing since I felt the UX is better if you manually refresh):

This week's To Do: fetch the exchange on the backend and not rely on coingecko.

I'm also not in love with the domain url (.me), but the nicer alternatives are either taken or too expensive. preev is a great catchy name and it works amazing. Dark mode is a most for me (I spent a lot of time with lights dimmed and babies asleep).

I always appreciate projects with a platform that can help the community I've bookmarked some of the Bitcoin conversion platforms and I'm going to bookmark yours for reference, comparison, and recommendations. I also have one set up and it's been online for 5 years now I hope you can keep up yours and sustain it, our community needs something like this.

Congratulations on launching your converter and good luck.

These are now the converter I'm using and have included yours. (...)

Thanks, happy to see btc2fiat.me included.

It's good that you created it as open source, but I saw many similar websites already available, so you need to provide something special if you want to attract more people.
You may want to add direct github link and open source license on the bottom of the page (without going to About page).

You can easily use Coingecko directly (since you are using their API) with uBlocker Origin extension, and you won't see any ads on their page Wink
I know other useful websites that can convert Bitcoin to fiat currencies and smaller units, one of them was created by our forum member Bitmover if I remember correctly:
https://bitcoindata.science/bitcoin-units-converter.html

I added the link to Github on the footer, but it might still not be clear. Maybe just write "Open source"? Also, the main point was to make it very lightweight to load.

13  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: New project: btc2fiat.me -- a lightweight btc to fiat converter on: April 21, 2022, 01:32:33 PM
How about http://preev.com/?

Thanks! Much appreciated. Preev looks nice, I'll take some ideas from it. Essentially I noticed many converts don't have Satoshis as a unit, which are used a lot recently (in fact I was used to seeing mBTC in my times). And as you mentioned, the dark mode. I read a lot while my toddler sleeps in my lap so dark mode is a must!

For now you can say it's bitcoin to USD  Tongue.
Can the user choose the price according to the platform? View the average price of Bitcoin in addition to the prices on each platform.
I hope that you will add some charts and some data such as tx fees, mempool and others.
Also, if you add ready-made prices with a single click (10$, 100$, 1000$,) it will be good.

Minimalistic Tx fees and mempool sounds like a great idea, maybe for a separate expansion of this project. Thanks! I wanted it to be a "war of the giants" between the biggest contender in fiat which is USD, but I wasn't aware of how big the Euro or Yuan are. So I plan on adding currencies.

When you mention platforms you mean different exchanges? Is it common for users to want to check multiple sources? (My own experience is that the number fluctuates so much that I always give or take some percentage when transacting with others).
14  Bitcoin / Project Development / BTC2FIAT.me: a lightweight Bitcoin to Fiat converter on: April 21, 2022, 12:03:58 PM
Hi everyone, out of frustration I created a very simple, lightweight BTC to Fiat converter:

https://btc2fiat.me

It's free, open source, free of ads or noise.

What do you all think?

Even though it's a very simple idea I was quite shocked to find how hard it is to find a converter that is free of distracting ads and random information which I don't care much about (such as the price of other assets).

I just went down the Bitcoin rabbit hole so feedback is welcome here or on Github. Cheers!

(Note: euro and other fiat support coming soon)

Gracias!
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do you spread BTC to people within you on: April 12, 2022, 01:54:41 PM
but please don't advice someone who is financially imbalance to invest in bitcoin especially the ones that have been hearing but don't know how it work and how it has performed in the past.

This. Couldn't agree more.

Especially since people in a tough financial spot will almost inevitably be absolutely looking to make quick gains as fast as possible and they will develop tunnel vision into Bitcoin's mission as opposed to volatility.
17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do you spread BTC to people within you on: April 12, 2022, 05:58:03 AM
The way I was introduced more seriously to it: by talking about the dollar and inflation. Let people find out by themselves what is causing this much inflation (is it really what the mainstream media says?) and this might make them look for alternatives.

I was shocked when I realized inflation was 12% in the US -- many of us who don't live in the S are unaware of how this will leak to all other currencies pegged to the dollar -- but most people do agree that our daily expenses, house prices, etc. are going over the roof in almost any country.

I had to literally beg for a salary increase when I got promoted to Engineering Manager. I got 7%, which meant not enough to even keep up with inflation. That was the day I was ready to go down the rabbit hole.

19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Without banking bitcoins will be work on: April 12, 2022, 05:32:34 AM
Where I come from (and in other countries in Latin America) you can buy bitcoin directly by joining a Telegram / Whatsapp channel of people who are looking to either sell or buy.

That's what I do. You bring cash, they send you bitcoin, done deal. This is the only way I have ever purchased bitcoin.

Or, take for example, my friend, who was going on a sort of expensive trip and needed to sell some bitcoin that he was holding because he ran out of cash. I happily bought it from him.

I used that bitcoin to purchase web-hosting related services and a few physical goods in shops that I saw accepted bitcoin. Again, to my surprise many services accept bitcoin, not just shady ones but reputable ones like ProtonMail / ProtonVPN.

Now, I'm not saying this model works for everyone and I know we're nowhere close to mass adoption if it were ever to happen. Bank statements are very important for certain things (applying for loans, visas and residences to different countries) but I for one keep less and less money in the banks. I talk around locally to people and see who is interested in bitcoin, surprisingly more people than I thought know about it, but of course, still not enough.

Gracias!
