1  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How to redeem Casascius using Electrum on: May 06, 2022, 05:17:47 PM
Yes. My last post was about a test (I had first send from an exchange a small amount of bitcoin to Electrum AND send it after from Electrum to the exchange). It was only to be sure it was ok from end to end.

But it's ok for the private key. It was indeed a typo mistake. Sorry for this rookie's mistake.

Thanks.

I have put my private key on the dialog box for "Import private ket" but it's impossible to push on the "Next" button.
Is there something missing ?

They speak on the info part about p2pkh:

Can you tell me exactly what I have to put ?

Thanks.

Hello guys,

I have done a transfer from Electrum to an Exchange.

However, it puts "Unconfirmed".
I guess it's because I haven't put enough but someone can explain what I have to do here ?

Thanks.

-They ask me to create a "secret" sentence (I don't remember in which step sorry but it wasn't in the tutorial I think. except this, the tutorial was gratand really well explained)

Electrum does indeed generate a 12-word secret seed phrase, that's the back up for your wallet.  The seed phrase creation part of the process is beyond the scope of my tutorial, which focuses on verifying the PGP signatures.  If you need help using Electrum there is plenty of information in this sub-forum, or feel free to create another thread to ask your specific questions.

No no you understand me wrongly.

It was not by installing Electrum (NOT seed phrase). It was by verifiyng the signature with GPG just after the "Generate new key pair".
They ask me to create a secret phrase (I had to choose it myself). It was not by using Electrum but well GPG.
I think it's a new step.

I have completed it and the signature is verified. So good news Electrum software seems good!

For DireWolf, one complementary info for the tutorial :
-They ask me to create a "secret" sentence (I don't remember in which step sorry but it wasn't in the tutorial I think. except this, the tutorial was gratand really well explained)

Thanks for the help of everyone.

1) I am able to save it (From File>Save as ...) in .txt but not in .asc (you seem to say that it's possible to direct convert in asc. for the link but I don't see the option. Am I wrong somewhere ?
Choose Finder > Preferences > Advanced. Now you can check "Show all filename extensions." if it isn't already checked. Now go to the directory you've saved your .txt file and rename it to <any_name>.asc.

To convert a .txt fil in .asc it needs to download again a new software.
There's no need to download any software for this. It's as simple as renaming a file.

Indeed that was super easy (However I needed the explanation so thanks a lot)
I am not sure 100% that it works because I can't open the file  (.asc) but I guess it's normal because GPG is not installed yet.

1. Do I copy all the text ? (including "Begin PGP Public key block" etc ...) Or only the key ?
You copy all the text. Actually, you don't need to copy it at all, just save it as a .asc file.

2. I have tried with TextEdit on Mac BUT when I try to save I don't see the .asc extension.
You can save it as a .txt, if it doesn't allow you directly as .asc, but it should be trivial to change it to .asc later. In the directory you've saved it, doesn't it show you the file extensions? If not, check: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=mac+show+file+extension

1) I am able to save it (From File>Save as ...) in .txt but not in .asc (you seem to say that it's possible to direct convert in asc. for the link but I don't see the option. Am I wrong somewhere ?
2) I have made my search on internet. To convert a .txt fil in .asc it needs to download again a new software. Do you know which one I can trust (if possible available in the App Store) ?
3) I am wondering in using this tutorial if the solution for verifying Electrum is really good. Indeed, to verify Electrum, I need to download others softwares (PGP and the soft for converting txt into asc). However, how can I be sure that PGP and other are secure and not full of malware. I should also verify PGP and Co. And it's becoming an infinite circle ... What do you think ?

So a priori what I have is good no ?
--> I mean. For the moment, I haven't import my private key. So (according to rick), it's normal that they haven't asked the password yet because it's the next step...
Ah, so what you meant in the previous reply is when you select "import bitcoin addresses or private keys"?
If that's the case, then it's normal.

If you can remember, the other standard wallet that you've created asked for a password in the last step of the install wizard.
Any wallet type is the same, the password will be prompted in the last step.

Ouf. Ok I feel better now Smiley
Anyway, I will check the procedure for verifying Electrum (a little challenge ^^)

Thanks for your help.

-I want to be sure when I click on "Import private key" that there is access to a new wallet with the possibility to "Send" to an Exchange
After importing your private key in Electrum you'll be prompted to choose a password for the wallet. After choosing a password (or skipping it) you'll be shown the usual window where Electrum will show you the balance on your wallet and all recorded transactions. Since it's a Casascius coin you'll see a single transaction that is the one responsible for funding the address (in this case with 1 BTC).

@nc50Ic --> It seems that Ricks said that "After importing your private key in Electrum you'll be prompted to choose a password for the wallet. "

Hello,

Thank you for your quick answer.

I have still 2 questions for Thomas Key :
1. Do I copy all the text ? (including "Begin PGP Public key block" etc ...) Or only the key ?
2. I have tried with TextEdit on Mac BUT when I try to save I don't see the .asc extension. There are .txt, .html, RTF, .docx, .doc, .odt ...
But NOT .asc. There is also "Document d'archive web" and I have saved on doc with it but I don't think that it is and I don't see the extension on the doc ...

Please can you help ?

No. I will use macOS (a priori)
12  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [GUIDE] How to Safely Download and Verify Electrum [Guide] on: May 04, 2022, 09:36:42 PM
Hello,

Thanks for this interesting post.

I am considering verify Electrum with your method. I have read carefully your tutorial but I still need to start the process.

I am a Mac user and I had several questions :
-I have already downloaded Electrum (from the original website : electrum.org) --> Do I have to uninstall Electrum and install it again after installing GPG, generate private key (I am not sure to understand the reason of the private key either) and Imprt ThomasV's PGP Key on MacOS ? Or I can verify Electrum while it's already on my MacOS ?
-For info, I am using the Electrum version 4.2.1

I had another question concerning :

"Import ThomasV's PGP Key on Mac OS
Download ThomasV's PGP Key from a trusted source.  If it's not already running, launch the GPG Keychain app, and click the import button.  Browse to the location where you saved the ThomasV.asc file, and select it."

Are these links are the trusted source for ThomasV's PGP key (in the beginning of your tutorial) :

"Redundant links to ThomasV's public key:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/spesmilo/electrum/master/pubkeys/ThomasV.asc
https://keys.openpgp.org/search?q=6694D8DE7BE8EE5631BED9502BD5824B7F9470E6
https://keyserver.ubuntu.com/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0x6694d8de7be8ee5631bed9502bd5824b7f9470e6"

If yes. I have opened the first link and there is indeed a long public key BUT I have no idea how to download it in .asc format. (sorry I'm new in bitcoin AND also in MacOs). Can you explain ?

From first you, it's the only steps that are unclear for the moment.

Thanks for your help.

One other question :

On the Electrum Wallet, when I open it there's the choice between opening the current standard wallet (let's call it "wallet_a") and a password is needed or "Alternatively" Create a new wallet.

-If I Choose the option "Create New Wallet" (let's call wallet_b)
-When the dialog box asks "What kind of wallet do you want to create ? " --> I have to choose "Import bitcoin addresses or Private keys"
-Enter the private key of the "Cascasius" coin in the dialog box and click on "Next"
-After that, my Electrum wallet (the new one then) should show exactly 1.BTC as balance and I will have the possibility to send the amount on the exchange platform of my choice

However, what I think strange is :
-For opening the standard wallet already created I need a password
-When I create a new wallet (for importing the key) they don't ask me for a password for the new wallet. Is it normal ?

Therefore :
-How do I find the wallet_b (the one created by "importing private key" in case I close Electrum. I ask that because they don't ask for password
-I want to be sure when I click on "Import private key" that there is access to a new wallet with the possibility to "Send" to an Exchange

Sorry if it seems stupid but the absence of password for the new wallet when import keys worries me a bit.

Thanks for your answers.

Is there an alternative to Electrum ? Is it possible by example to use a wallet that is validated by the appstore ? By example, I have seen Trust Wallet but maybe there are other best alternative ?
You can never be absolutely sure, being "validated" by a company doesn't mean there can't be bugs in it or malware on your system.
There are many alternatives, but Electrum is often recommended. It also comes preinstalled on Tails, which makes offline signing much easier.

1) It's interesting. I thought that Electrum and Ballet were the only wallet adapted for mini private keys.

Because as far as I have understood this is the "mini private key" that is a problem due to the lenght of the private key (under 30 character) ?
But by doing my research it is not clear which other wallet supports mini private keys.

2) Another question : Casascius Series 1 holograms use a 22-character variant of the minikey format, instead of 30 characters (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mini_private_key_format). Is it also the case for version 2 Cascasius coin ? Or is it possible to proceed with a classic wallet for version 2 (because version 2 should be not with mini private key but private key)

3) Is it possible to give me some of the alternative wallets supporting mini private keys ? I have time to do some research and decide which wallet is the most appropriate for my case

Thanks

Offline signing seems quite complicated for me.

Is there an alternative to Electrum ? Is it possible by example to use a wallet that is validated by the appstore ? By example, I have seen Trust Wallet but maybe there are other best alternative ?

Thanks for the input.

However, that doesn't really answer to my question ...

Do you think I can trust the member (direct use of Telegram, provide an outdated escrow list, etc ..) ?

I would like to have the opinion of some members.

Thanks.
17  Economy / Collectibles / Re: HOW TO BUY OR SELL HERE... on: May 02, 2022, 07:02:52 PM
Hello,

I'm currently searching to sell a Casascius 1 bitcoin.
I have put my announce on "Collectibles" section.

I have been reached by one member (Koil). He has proposed to discuss directly about the coin on Telegram and directly proposes a price for the coin (after checking the pics).

I'm a bit suspicious because of your thread about it.

He proposed to use an escrow pretending that it's impossible to be scammed if we use an escrow from the official list :
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=855778.760

However after checking, the last post was from 2021 and said that a lot of escrows mentioned there were now inactive.
I made him the remark that the list was a bit outdated and he argues that :
"It's the first and only one official list. There is no other official escrow list"

Sounds strange to me. What do you think ? Can I trust this member ?

How much do you trust your macOS and all other software you've installed on it? Do you trust it with €35,000? If not, you should NOT enter your private key and go for a solution that includes offline signing.
As long as you haven't peeled the coin, you can take as long as you need to research how to do this.

Indeed I don't think that I will trust my macOS for this kind of amount. Is this so risky ?
You talk about a solution that includes offline signing. Do you have an explanation or a link for that ?
I have searched a little bit on internet and it seems a quite complicated process. Is it the process where you need to use 2 computers (one online and one offline).

Do you have more info on that ?

Many thanks already.

PS : Sorry for my stupid questions but I'm completely newbie with that universe and in addition to that English is not my mother tongue and not always easy to understand all the specific vocabulary.
20  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How to redeem Casascius using Electrum on: May 01, 2022, 08:14:29 AM
Hi Cricktor,

Yes. My Electrum version comes from the original website.
I will verify the signature to be sure. Do you have the link of the thread that explains how to do it ?

You can post this thread/questions in the Collectibles section and many people will answer, including the sweeping vs selling options for you based on your location etc. There are also forks on the coin such as BCH etc etc...

Sorry but what are the forks ? I have already seen this word several times in the forum but I don't get it what it is.
Someone can explain it clearly ?

For info, I have created a thread for the selling :

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5396802.0

Apparently I need to upload the pictures on imgur. I will try to do it tonight.

Many thanks.
