1  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [380 GH/s 0% fee SMPPS] ArsBitcoin mining pool! Come join us! on: August 04, 2011, 08:47:27 PM
On the "My Stats" page it says "Paid PPS Work at 0:00 7/32 = 1.1577588253104047"

I'm grateful for the payout but I didn't know I was mining on July 32nd!

More info plz! Temperatures of each core, clock and mem settings, what miners and overclocking tools, if any you are using would be helpful. If you can get a screenshot of the miners running, with GPU-Z showing that would be helpful.

@Jack of Diamonds - I don't have any 6990's but out of 7 AMD/ATI cards I've got so far, 5 of them had crappy TIM/thermal paste applications. I'd bet cleaning and re-applying with some quality thermal paste could solve your issue with that overheating core.

If the PSU has multiple rails, it's best to split up the PCIE power connectors between the rails, to even out the power draw.
5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoins will become Betamax if we don't do THIS on: July 26, 2011, 01:59:40 PM
When you take into account servers and Android OS, I'd say Linux has been fairly successful.  There are large numbers of people using it without even realizing it (or caring).  Bitcoin can achieve a similar success.

Also don't forget OSX and iOS are both based on the Linux kernel.
I thought it was BSD

I stand corrected. Still, while MS has been busy monopolizing the desktop, *nix begat the preferred mobile platforms. Believe me, I hope Bitcoin gets popular support soon, as that would quickly increase the value of my BTC. However if that doesn't happen now, BTC could still become big later, perhaps in some application no one has even thought of yet.

It's true that usability and accessibility must be improved in order to accelerate adoption of Bitcoin, but even if those improvements are slow to come, I don't think Bitcoin will die right away. It's already carved out a good niche and developed a devoted following. I don't think anyone's crystal ball can predict what we'll be doing with bitcoins 2, 5 or 20 years from now.
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many people have you introduced to bitcoin? on: July 25, 2011, 05:08:34 AM
I've introduced probably a dozen people but only a couple have been curious enough to learn about it for themselves. One co-worker of mine compared mining bitcoins to "farming" gold and other virtual goods in WOW and other MMORPG's.

I'm getting disconnected from the pool quite a bit here, and many of my shares are being rejected. Hope this clears up soon!

If I was a bot I would've given up on posting and just started sending everyone 1000's of PMs by now.

I'm one of the post-bubble Bitcoin Boomers. Started around the end of June. Now producing about 2200Mh/s. I hope to sell enough BTC to pay off my hardware within the next 6 weeks or so, then keep the rest for investment and/or actually buying things with BTC!

Looks to me like there's enough air volume in there to spread out the heat, as long as that fan keeps working. Still, you have to wonder if the people in the office above will notice the hot floor and prompt a visit from the HVAC folks!
12  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 6970 running with default settings too hot on: July 21, 2011, 05:32:06 PM
I have two 5870s, one XFX and one Sapphire. Both manufacturers did a terrible job applying the thermal paste. Reapplying it dropped temps by 10c on the XFX and 11-12 on the Sapphire. I didn't note the temps on my 5830s or my 5770, but there were improvements in every case.

A couple of tips:

1.) Often the heatsinks sit slightly off kilter, so you might need to use more paste than you would for a CPU.

2.) Again because of how the heatsinks sit, you might get air bubbles if you try applying a thin, even coat. I've had more success putting a large drop in the middle of the GPU and letting the pressure of the heatsink spread it out.

3.) If you use Arctic silver or any other conductive/capacitative paste, be careful not to get it on the electrical components as some people have killed their cards that way.

I've only got 4, but I'll sell mine for 14USD each. Anyone in MD go ahead and PM me. We can meet in the Rockville area. You watch me send them to your address from my Tradehill account, I take your cash in exchange!
14  Other / Beginners & Help / Phoenix and backup pools on: July 21, 2011, 03:07:03 PM
My main pool had an outage recently, so I've decided to set up backup pools for the first time. I had read in another post that an extra miner can be set up using the same device, at a lower aggression setting. When the main miner goes idle, this second miner gets to use the resources and start mining. I decided to try this, and found the ideal settings for me. Maybe this will be a good starting point for someone else in need of a backup.

Main miner:
phoenix -u http://username.workername:workerpass@pool1.com:8344/ -k phatk DEVICE=0 VECTORS AGGRESSION=11 BFI_INT WORKSIZE=256 FASTLOOP=FALSE

Backup miner:
phoenix -u http://username.workername:workerpass@pool2.com:8344/ -k phatk DEVICE=0 VECTORS AGGRESSION=5 BFI_INT WORKSIZE=256 FASTLOOP=TRUE

I was surprised how much of a difference the fastloop setting has on low-aggression miners. With fastloop=false, my rate on my 5830 was 268mh/s. With fastloop=true it went up to 289mh/s.

The only drawback so far, is that the backup miner never really stops mining. It chugs along using a few mh/s for my backup pool at all times. Still, it doesn't seem to be reducing my overall output which is good.

Well I'm mostly a lurker but I'd like to be able to post a comment or two in my pool's thread, or give people occasional tips on video card overclocking, etc. So I'd better start spamming this newbie section so I can be let out.
