If you are using the latest version 0.9.2.1, you can enable coin control (Settings->Options->Wallet->Enable coin control features) and put your main address as your "Custom change address" in the "Send" tab. Smiley

Oh awesome!
Maybe I can continue with (the updated version of) Qt after all.
But does this also solve the problem that Light mentioned:

...and you don't mind backing up your wallet every 100 txs...

In other words, if I change the settings mentioned by Domino, can I just write down (in a safe place) my main address public and private key (which would then be my only address, even if I receive change) and not have to worry about backing up Qt after every 100 transactions?

Run bitcoin-qt fulltime and help support the network

I use btc-qt and it seems solid. Been using it since 1 year ago.

Thanks for your input, ThomasCrowne and deebob, but you guys must have missed that I already do run Qt, but I'm instead looking for a different wallet that delivers all change (after spending) back to my MAIN address, so that I can keep all of my Bitcoin at just one address; Qt does not do this.

Electrum does not download the blockchain to your pc. It downloads it to a central server. It does however send change to your main address. For example you receive .1 bitcoin delivered to a receiving address. On your next send of say .05 it will take that .1 from that address and you will find the change under Main account. Electrum meets only one of your criteria. For me I chose electrum because i am running only 120g ssd. If i was to upgrade I may consider running qt but for now electrum is doing what i need it to.

Thanks so much, joshraban76! It looks like this is the precise information I needed. I guess there are no wallets, currently, that do both - just one or the other. Thanks again!

Thanks all!

With regard to the "official wallet" mentioned by Gianluca95, I believe this is the Qt (or 'core') wallet that I already use, but please correct me if this is wrong? If it's right, then, like I said, it delivers transaction change to different addresses, not my main address, but I'm looking for other wallet options that DO deliver transaction change to my main address.

Again, I'm wondering if there is a good PC wallet that...
- constantly synchronizes the blockchain (like Qt does), but...
- delivers all change (after spending) back to my MAIN address, so that I can keep all of my Bitcoin at just one address?

I appreciate the info from cech4204a and joshraban76 about Multibit and Electrum, and I've spent the last little while reading up on them (and others), but I was unable to determine if either of them meet both of the criteria that I mentioned above. Does anyone happen to know off-hand if they (or any others) do?

Thanks again!

Steve

Hello all,

I already searched these forums for an answer, but couldn't find one.
However, if this has already been answered, please point me in the right direction (and I apologize for wasting time)?

Anyway, based on other information provided to me in these forums, I've learned that Qt Wallet (which I believe is also known as the 'core' wallet?) is a great full wallet which also offers the added anonymity feature of delivering your change to a different address.

However, if I don't care too much about anonymity, is there a good PC wallet that...
- constantly downloads blockchain updates (like Qt does), but...
- delivers all change (after spending) back to my MAIN address, so that I can keep all of my Bitcoin at just one address?

Thanks!

Steve

This question sounds like a caller on Free Talk Live the other night right out of the gate.

Yes, good ear!
Indeed, I was that caller.
They recommended that I check out this website, and so I have.  Smiley

If anonymity is NOT a major concern for me, then perhaps I should be using a different desktop wallet instead of Qt; that way, I only have to worry about one address there, and not several change addresses.

Any good recommendations for a different Windows desktop wallet that also updates the full blockchain constantly?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks again for the help!

Apart from the "public key" problem, there is another advantage I can think of for using new change addresses, which is privacy.

Cool, thanks!
So then, if I want the extra privacy that I already get with Qt Wallet on my laptop, maybe it's a good idea for me to use a different iPhone wallet besides bitWallet, so one that also uses change addresses? Any recommendations?
Thanks again!

Change addresses are a different thing. Generally you will get change back to one of the input addresses in the transaction. It wouldn't make sense to generate a new address for change, since the public key would then be exposed anyway.

Thanks for the info, but now I'm thoroughly confused.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I understand things right now...

When I'm using Qt Wallet on my laptop, and I spend some Bitcoin from its main address, the change gets sent back into a new change address.
When I'm using bitWallet on my iPhone, and I spend some Bitcoin from its main address, the change gets sent back into the same main address.

What am I getting wrong?

Thanks again!

Hi Meuh6879: It's a wallet on my laptop computer, and all it says in the "about" section is "Qt".

Hi Exergy & ShameOnYou: Thanks for the great explanations. Exergy mentioned that "pretty much all wallets" perform this function, however, I'm also using a wallet on my iPhone called bitWallet, and it doesn't seem to do this (i.e. it appears that it sends change back to the main address that I spent from). With this in mind, would you recommend that I use a different iPhone wallet instead?

Hi all!

First, I apologize if this question has already been asked.
I DID search the forums, but was unable to find an answer.
Still, if I missed it, please just point me in the right direction?

Anyway, I'm wondering: Why does Qt Wallet send change to new, hidden addresses?
This seems to make things extra confusing, but maybe there's a good reason for it?
Depending on the replies, I may have a follow up question.

Thanks!

Steve
