Shadow Market Update

A lot of you are wondering what's happening with our Market Place, and I'm happy to say we are moving in the right direction. We've been working on our 2 party escrow, which makes fraud unprofitable, without any middle man. Bitmarkets happen to have a very good explanation of 2 party escrow at https://voluntary.net/bitmarkets/slides/Bitmarkets.pdf, check it out.

Our fee structures for messages and MP posts will be as follows for now:
0.2 SDC per 4KB per 2days, so posting a 4KB listing for 4 days will be 0.4 SDC, just as an 8KB ad for 2 days will be 0.2 SDC. Updates to MP listings, will cost 0.05 SDC, and will not add any duration to the listing.

The fees will go towards those supporting the network, and included in the next block found by people staking. We will still support free messages on the network, but we will be limiting them to 10 messages / client / minute, and limiting the size of the free messages to 512 bytes. This will be done in order to reduce abuse and attacks on the ShadowChat side of things.

We will be filtering out a list of keywords in listings, as to keep the main market place tree clean. Our category tree will be built on a HD Wallet key, which everyone will be able to enable / disable certain categories / trees in the category structure, thereby only subscribing to categories that you would be interested in.

The owner of the listing will broadcast the ad to the relevant category in the market place, which will all be automated in the backend, so users will not have to worry too much about this. Because it is more like a classified ad system, users will be able to decide on their categories, but in order to keep the market place clean, we are looking at ways to give people incentive for administering the system. Ways in which we could do this, is to allocate a certain portion of the market place listing fees to those voting on the listings.

Bear in mind we are writing from the ground up, leaving room for improvement, as I'm sure the development of Shadow Market will be continuous, just as with Shadow itself. We will most likely be eliminating issues with our voting mechanism, and improving upon it throughout the alpha testing phase, where our public voting mechanism will be decided on.

In order to get the best decentralized market place, we are going to require loads of participation, so we are really hoping that we will at some stage attract more developers, but for now our focus is to get to a point where we can start testing.

Last but not least!

You can find download links for v1.3.3.5 in the opening post

Finally, I would just like to personally thank everyone in the community and team for getting us to where we are today, and for always helping us move forward Smiley

Update: Thursday, October 1, 2015

Hello everybody,

It’s time for another development update to bring you up to speed with recent changes in the Shadow project.

The last weeks our main focus has been on the successful implementation of the HD Wallet into the ShadowCore platform, fixing GUI issues, bug smashing, testing, testing and more testing. While Tecnovert, St3bas and myself have been working on getting new Shadow components ready for our upcoming releases, a team was set up and is currently updating the documentation and writing new tutorials to help users navigate through the various features that are available for Shadow. We have launched a new, up to date, documentation website (doc.shadowproject.io) and will be adding text and video based tutorials as we move along. Details about the documentation will be revealed on our official development blog (blog.shadowproject.io).

For now, let’s look at some of the updates in more detail.

Hierarchical Deterministic (HD) wallet
We have successfully implemented a BIP32 framework and keys (HD Wallet) on which we will be building many interesting features in the future. For now, we have implemented a hierarchical deterministic wallet; that allows you to recover all the keys in a wallet using only the master key.

The latest version of ShadowCore is released and contains lots of code improvements and bug fixes. The biggest change is the implementation of a complete HD Wallet and a totally new user experience for management of your wallet keys. This was a fairly extensive update from our core developers. You can view the full details of the 156 changed files with 17,818 additions and 2,451 deletions. There’s a summary of the changes in the release notes here.

HD wallets really opened up a field of possibilities for Shadow because they are useful for multiple aspects of the project. For example: the implementation was a big step towards the release of our decentralized marketplace because we will be using BIP32 keys for the market categories. They allow us to have tree level categories in messages, so people can subscribe and publish to certain categories.

This HD Wallet consists of the following implementations:
BIP-0032; hierarchical deterministic wallet
BIP-0039; mnemonic sentence for the generation of deterministic wallets
BIP-0044; multi-account hierarchy for deterministic wallets

Technical Aspects:
BIP32 - https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0032.mediawiki
BIP39 - https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039.mediawiki
BIP44 - https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0044.mediawiki

Below you will find some of the new features and advantages that these implementations bring to the Shadow platform:

- You now only need to create a backup on initial creation.
- Easily backup and restore your wallet without needing any other information (wallet backup and restore consists of simple list of 12 to 24 common words).
- Conveniently create a single backup of the seed in a human readable format that will last the life of the wallet, without the worry of this backup becoming stale.
- New receive and change addresses are used for each transaction.
- Easily and securely accessed your wallet from multiple devices (Desktop, Mobile).
- Use the same 12-24 mnemonic sentence as your Bitcoin HD wallet to create a Shadow wallet.
- You no longer need to create a physical backup that can be traced or linked to your identity (just make sure you remember the 12-24 mnemonic series of words).
- Use a single seed that generates all private keys (never lose any coins because you forgot to do a back up).

All of the above comes together into a very simple and elegant solution which brings you the first native hierarchical deterministic wallet on the Satoshi code base!

Hard Fork for Ring Signature update
We are ready to implement a new ring signature scheme on mainnet that is based on the efficiency improvement work of Adam Back and Andy Toshi. It offers a stunning >42% improvement over our current ring signature scheme. To add these changes we have implemented a hardfork for the 19th of October 00:00 GMT. Please make sure you have updated your client to the latest version before then.

To demonstrate the difference between the old and new ring signature scheme, see below for the before and after size of the data stored in the blockchain for a transaction with 16 ring signatures.

Before hard fork: ≈1.5KB
After hard fork: ≈1.11KB

To run the tests yourself, make sure you have all the dependencies needed to build the deamon, then cd shadow/src && make -f makefile.unix test, then ./testshadow -t ringsigtests -l all > ringsig_tests.txt.

*For more detailed information on the changes in this release please view: https://github.com/ShadowProject/shadow/blob/v1.3.3/release-notes.txt

ShadowCore v1.3.3.3 ***LIVENET***
Before downloading any of the files below, please make sure to backup your wallets first! The Shadow team uses Gitian as its software distribution method. Gitian uses a deterministic build process to allow multiple builders to create identical binaries. This allows multiple parties to sign the resulting binaries, guaranteeing that the binaries and tool chain were not tampered with and that the same source was used. It removes the build and distribution process as a single point of failure. We strongly advice you only download from official websites and if in doubt always double check.

ShadowGo
The next release of ShadowGo is currently undergoing final testing. Once we have ironed out the last bugs we will move it to beta and begin public testing! This new version of ShadowGo uses the new SHA256 algorithm creating quite a number of improvements in terms of security, processing power and energy consumption; overall the update has resulted in a huge 60%+ reduction in the memory footprint of the application. To give you an idea the previous application used to consume between 650-750MB whereas the new one is ~100MB.

To give you a heads up, some of the new features will include:

- Latest HTML5 Interface (new responsive design)
- Thin mode support (less memory consumption)
- ShadowChat support (encrypted messaging)
- ShadowSend v2 support (private transactions)

ShadowMarket
Now that we have successfully managed to implement a HD wallet into ShadowCore we will be moving on to the next stage of ShadowMarket’s development! Let’s take a look at what our team will be working on next:

- ShadowCore V1.3.3.3 hardfork (19th October 00:00 GMT)
- ShadowCore GUI v2 (November 2015)
- ShadowMarket v1 (November 2015)
- Decentralized Escrow (tba)
- Voting + Feedback and rating system (tba)
- ShadowChat v2 (tba)

Now that most of our core developers are focussed on ShadowMarket’s development we’re getting closer to to finishing the first version (Alpha) of Shadow’s decentralized p2p commerce platform. Please note that the ShadowMarket Alpha testing phase will be exclusive and testing will only be available to a select number of people. Starting with community members that have made a donation or contributed to the Shadow project in the past. Stay tuned, because we plan to start sending out private invites around November this year!

That covers our development updates for now. As always, we look forward to hearing about your experiences and kindly request you send us your feedback on IRC or SLACK. You can stay up to date with our progress by registering to ShadowTalk, subscribing to our development blog or following us on twitter.

Shadow Bug Bounties!

According to Linus’ Law, “given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow”. That’s one of the reasons why Shadow’s source code is publicly available; but merely making the source code available doesn’t accomplish anything if people don’t read it!

For this reason, Shadow has introduced a series of bug bounties. Similar to the bounties offered by Mozilla and Google, Shadow bug bounties provide an opportunity for people who find bugs to be compensated. Unlike those programs, however, Shadow’s bounties are not limited to security vulnerabilities.

Depending on the type of bug and when it is reported, different bounties will be awarded. All bounties are paid out in SDC, at the 3-day average of each to a fixed US Dollar value.

Happy hunting!

HD (Hierarchical Deterministic) Wallet Testing Has Started!

Our developers have made significant progress with the HD wallet development in terms of code refactoring, unit testing and bug stomping. The HD wallet implementation will be a key part of the new update because the BIP32 structure will also be used to create the ShadowMarket categories. This will allow the creation of an infinite tree of categories for the market place. From a wallet perspective this will also allow you to recreate your entire wallet from the single passphrase, which means you will only need to write-down/remember the passphrase once.
Yes that means no more worrying about regular backups and secure storage of wallet files.

We will be completing our final testing in the upcoming weeks. Once complete this will be the first native implementation of a hierarchical deterministic wallet within the satoshi forked codebase.

New And Improved ShadowCore GUI

Ever since the first version of ShadowCore was launched, we have always made sure to be in tune to our users adaptive needs. Taking into account your requests and feedback we have implemented some changes, refreshed and improved our GUI. While doing so, we tried to focus on some of Shadows upcoming features like ShadowMarket that will require a lot of new elements. ShadowCore’s improved GUI will break new ground in cryptocurrecy software by bringing more controls to your fingertips and provides a completely new user experience.

Here’s a list of some of the changes. A detailed list will be posted with the live release.

- Full responsive design
- New slide-in sub-level sidebar big/small version
- Better data tables / pagination
- New options/settings screen with tabs (wallet)
- New options/settings (market)
- Marketplace listing
- Improved send and receive pages
- Help functions (popups) for new SDC users
- New search / modal
- Market category filters

The new version of ShadowCore is currently undergoing final testing and debugging. We expect to be able to release around the end of this month. Below you will find a sneak preview of the improved GUI + ShadowMarket feature.  Many enhancements have been made to increase end-user productivity and pleasure. Our goal is to create a visual representation of a ecommerce platform that users can easily relate to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbMpeAL95m8

*We will upload a 2nd video that focusses more on ShadowMarket’s look and feed + user interface later this month.

Moving Forward

Now that Q2 has ended we wanted to take some time to thank everybody that has contributed and supported us over the past months. We can look back with gratitude to the many that put their faith in Shadow by supporting the technology, buying SDC, and more. We’re proud of what we’ve been able to do together so far, and are very excited about the tremendous growth and change for Shadow’s technology and adoption. The past months have been an exciting journey, with a bigger and better development team and supportive community, there is no telling what Shadow will achieve by the end of Q3.

Now, before we get to emotional. Let’s take a look at some of our future plans as we enter the next phase of the Shadow project.

- ShadowCore 2.0 release
- ShadowGo 2.0 (android) beta release
- HD wallet implementation
- Multisig support for ShadowTokens
- BIP65 (smart escrow support)
- ShadowMarket feedback and rating system
- ShadowMarket Back-end/front-end integration
- ShadowMarket alpha testing phase

That covers our development updates for now. If you have any questions regarding recent or upcoming changes you can contact us via IRC, SLACK or Github. You can stay up to date with our progress by registering to ShadowTalk, subscribing to the Shadow blog or following us on twitter.

Update: Thursday, June 11 2015

It’s time for another development update to bring you up to speed with recent changes in the Shadow project. For the past weeks our development efforts were mostly focused on bip32 development, adding security improvements to ShadowCore and working on ShadowMarkets front-end. We expect some exciting development updates in the upcoming month. For now, let’s look at the changes implemented last month.

-Added new HTML address lookups and edit dialogues
-Added new HTML sign and verify dialogues
-Removed qt address, sign and verify dialogues
-Added preparations for gitian builds

Security Update

In light of the unfortunate incidents involving crypto malware hacks; going forward before we release any further Shadow updates we are implementing gitian builds into our releases so that we can distribute safe and secure executables to prevent any fake builds going out to the public for the purpose of malicious activity. We strongly advice you only download from official websites and if in doubt double check.

ShadowMarket Development

Due to the recent unfortunate malware hacks in the crypto community we decided the work we were doing on ShadowCore including the addition of hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallet required more time and resources to ensure that it was ready to support services such as “hardware wallet” in the future. This involved going back to the drawing board and redesigning the implementation. The good news is that once complete this will be the first native implementation of a hierarchical deterministic wallet within the satoshi forked codebase. In the mean time our developers are getting closer to finishing the front-end (html/css/js) of ShadowMarket and are building the best user-interface experience. Our goal is to finish the ShadowMarket front-end before the end of Q2 so that we can show you a sneak preview of how everything will work.

ShadowMarket Q&A and Roadmap

To answer some of your questions, we have answered a first round of questions that you asked us during the ShadowMarket Q&A last month. The answers can now be found on on the ShadowMarket section of our website. To summarize all progress and make things easier to understand we have created a very clear roadmap for ShadowMarket. As we progress we will actively update this roadmap so that everybody can follow exactly where we are in terms of progress.

Upcoming Releases

Our Android wallet (ShadowGo) is nearing a beta testing stage. QT5.5 beta just got released which, with its new qtwebengine will make everything much easier and faster to develop and get out onto the Android platform. The new version of ShadowGo will include the following new features:

-Latest HTML5 Interface
-Thin mode (lite wallet)
-Anonymous Chat
-Anonymous Transactions

That covers our development updates for this week. If you have any questions regarding recent or upcoming changes you can contact us via IRC, slack, shadowtalk or github.

New Shadow PR Campaign Started!

After the success of our #FightForPrivacy campaign on Thunderclap our PR team has been looking for new ways to generate more exposure for the Shadow project. With the upcoming release of ShadowMarket, we believe now is a good time to start making some noise and let the world know about the anonymous economy we’re building.

Last week, we hired a Bitcoin PR firm (bitcoinprbuzz.com) and used one of their premium press release services to send out our first press release. Like us, they are seasoned cryptocurrency enthusiasts and have over two years of experience in Bitcoin marketing specifically. They now share our mission to spread the word about our revolutionary Shadow project to individuals and businesses worldwide. With their help, we aim to achieve the following results:

- Google News coverage.
- Yahoo Finance coverage.
- Publish our press release at 200 online news outlets and as many Bitcoin news websites as possible.

Update: Friday, May 8 2015

Shadow Hard Fork Successful!

We are happy to inform you all that we have successfully switched the Shadow network from Proof-of-Stake v1 to v2. This implementation required a hard fork of the blockchain that took place on Wednesday. The upgrade took a great deal of work from our developers and so we are pleased to inform you that everything went according to plan and was successful.

Why Switch To PoS v2?

To answer some of the questions we have received over the last few days we would like to explain some of the advantages of switching to PoS v2 over its predecessor.

PoS.v2 will give the Shadow network extra security over the longer term as it is no longer possible for someone to save up coinage in order to compromise the integrity of the network as it no longer plays a part in the stake calculation. The new system is designed to solve security issues which made PoS v1 coins more open to certain theoretical attacks. Although a 51% attack has not been successful on any PoS v1 coin, we opted to upgrade to eliminate theoretical attack vectors before moving on to our next objectives. In addition, we transitioned from “scrypt” to “SHA256” algorithm which brings a number of improvements  such as “SHA256” is more secure and battle-tested and staking requires much less processing overhead; overall this has resulted in a huge 60%+ reduction in the memory footprint of the application. To give you an idea the previous daemon used to consume between 650-750MB whereas the new one is ~200MB. Also part of this upgrade we have made changes to the way ShadowLite works; You can no longer stake if you are using ShadowLite wallets/Thin mode. The decision was made that staking should be a reward for securing the network and unfortunately lite/thin mode does not help to secure the network.

Bug fix!
We inherited a bug from the latest bitcoin code base which under “certain” conditions left users with new installations with less than five peers. This has now been fixed in the latest release 1.3.2.3. This is not a mandatory upgrade and only required for those who are seeing less than 5 peers.

Shadow v1.3.2.3

Moving Forward!

Finally, we have merged upstream to the great work rat4 is doing over at maintaining BlackCoin and in addition have also added additional code/functionality from the latest bitcoin codebase. We are currently working on the HD wallet, once it's finished Shadow will have the first HD wallet in satoshi based codebase. The key storage is done but there is still a bit of hairy leg work. We are doing it hand in hand with the messaging upgrade. Once that's done we will start working on the front-end of ShadowMarket!

Thank you for your continued support and trust in the Shadow Project. Have a great weekend!

Update: Saturday, 2nd May 2015

Get Synchronized With The New Bootstrap!

With the release of our new and improved ShadowCore client yesterday, we now introduce to you our new and improved bootstrap file, which under tests has shown to get your new ShadowCore client completely synchronized in just a few hours!

Info: https://github.com/dasourced/bootstrap-shadow/
Instructions: http://shadowcash.info/x/MAAV

*Bootstrapping is the preferred way to get your ShadowCore client synchronized because the client will validate the blocks for extra security against the network.

Speed Up The Process By Downloading The Blockchain

However for those of you who do not wish to wait you can alternatively “cheat” by downloading blockchain.zip and extracting the contents ("blk0001.dat" and "txleveldb") to your “ShadowCoin” data directory (overwriting the existing "blk0001.dat" file and "txleveldb" directory). If you don’t know where to find your data directory, please refer to the wiki: here. This method should have you synchronized in under 10 minutes. The blockchain.zip has been created from the above bootstrap.dat file.

*If you are already synchronized, there is no harm in using either of these methods above, as this will give you a "clean" blockchain, which will further help new wallets synchronize quicker.

Quick Reminder: PoS V2 Hardfork On May 6th!

ShadowCash will be forking on May 6th to switch to PoS v2. This is a mandatory update. Anyone who is not yet running on version 1.3.2.2 should not hesitate and update today. Please refer to our previous development update for more information.

Have a great weekend,
The Shadow Team

Support the Shadow Project in its #FightForPrivacy!

As some of you may know our community has set up a thunderclap campaign to raise more awareness for Shadow Project and the importance of fighting for your own privacy. Over the past 2 weeks we have been asking people to support the campaign by donating social reach using Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr accounts. In less than 2 weeks we managed to get a social reach of 1,300,000 people. This is something we should all be really proud of!

Thunderclap contest! Support and win SDC!

In order to reward all supporters the Shadow Community has kindly decided to hold a competition to support the #FightForPrivacy campaign. We have set up a wallet and added price money (SDC) that will be handed out to 5 people that have supported the #FightForPrivacy Thunderclap campaign. At this moment, already more than 2000 SDC has been donated into a donation address. When our Thunderclap message is blasted out we will pick 5 winners from the list of supporters. These winners will all receive a 20% share of the total amount that is on the wallet at that time. This means that everybody who wants to support the campaign can contribute by sending new donations to the wallet makings things more interesting for all supporters. To give new supporters some extra time to support and join the contest we have moved the launch date to the 10th of may.

Please support the campaign and encourage your friends who care about privacy to do the same. Together, we can let the world know how the Shadow Project will help us #FightForPrivacy!

Could you take your shitcoin advertisements to some other thread and try to keep this one on topic, thank you.

And if you absolutely have to advertise those shitcoins on some other shitcoin threads, then could you also try not to associate Shadow with that shit, thank you again.

that's a lot of shit

Today marks the start of a multi-channel marketing approach set up to create more awareness for The Shadow Project.
With this we hope to attract and inform even more people about Shadow, and to expand and strengthen the community and project further still.

This will be greater in scope than previous efforts to publicize the project and in particular we're hoping to start reaching those in the more general public who might also be interested in what we're doing. The campaign is set up and managed by community members, with the input of Shadow developers. So with that in mind we're pleased to announce that today officially marks the start of a publicity campaign we have all been working very hard on!

Hello everybody,

While most of Shadow's developers are busy doing what they do best, some of us have been working hard on a publicity strategy intended to create greater awareness of The Shadow Project.

As mentioned in rynomster's update, up until quite recently we haven't been as active as we could have been in keeping the community informed about development, or in publicizing the project outside the forums. One effect the recent Vice article had was to bring in a host of new users (including some developers) who'd like to learn more about - and to contribute to - the project. It's been inspiring to meet so many people who share our enthusiasm for the project's goals! The community is absolutely vital to Shadow and we wouldn't have achieved nearly so much without your help.

So with that in mind we're pleased to announce that today officially marks the start of a publicity campaign we have all been working very hard on.

Over the coming days we will:

   - Start a thunderclap campaign to create more awareness for Shadow.

   - Launch a new landing website for newcomers with the help of some community members.

   - Release a promotional video to help people better understand how Shadow works.

With this we hope to attract and inform even more people about Shadow, and to expand and strengthen the community and project further still. This will be far greater in scope than any previous efforts to publicize the project and in particular we're hoping to start reaching those in the more general public who might also be interested in what we're doing.

All Shadow holders are equal and all have a say in the direction the project is heading. You are all invited to join Slack and discuss all ongoing projects. If you are a developer, you can use your powers to do good and contribute!
