1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bringing Bitcoin to the mainstream on: August 22, 2014, 11:05:32 PM
One of the biggest problem getting people into Bitcoin is that we are: young, geeks, nerds, liberals, anarcho-capitalist, etc... (choose what you want) and we choose bitcoin only for its potential and its benefits, but in the real world we are only a minority

Most people are employees that buy the brand new and expensive smartphones, fashion clothes, listen new commercial music, etc just to follow the trend, and probably live their entire life apart from risk and investments... so, how we can reach them?

maybe one method is making bitcoin a new fashion, with merchandising and concentrating in how easy is to be used instead of how its works, mining, volatility of price, blockchain, etc

In Argentina we started a "evangelizing" movement doing travels around the country doing meetups, you can follow news on facebook https://www.facebook.com/girasbitcoiners

Bitcoiner Tour Argentina 2014

this thread is for share your ideas and opinions

May be people will chose that after some time. Also people add same auto, and mobile phones, and smartphones, and airplanes, and social nettworks, and emoney. After time they will add crypto currency in their lifes.
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It costs $0.09 cents to send $0.24 cents of Bitcoin? Really? on: August 22, 2014, 10:54:14 PM
Hi -

Tried to send $0.24 worth of bitcoin and this pops up:

Is this what they mean when they say Bitcoin can never be used for micro transactions?

Is this one of the 10 million things the Bitcoin dev team should have fixed 12 months ago, but has slated for "some time in the next 5 years" instead ?

Meanwhile the entire financial industry sees Bitcoin as having major flaws and never incorporates it.

And we never go ot the moon, because a bunch of developers have decided "we dont need that fixed right now.  we'll do it later" ?

Or is this something else?

-B-

Microtransactions is possible for btc, yes. I read about man, who send 0.0001 btc! Great to see, that i can to do that too Smiley

Good idea, but i think, cards would be better for physical wallet using.

5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is an Altcoin on: August 22, 2014, 10:36:07 PM
Bitcoin is an altcoin to Peercoin and Peercoin is an altcoin to Bitcoin.

Do all of you understand what "alt" means? It stands for alternate.

So when shown some new technology in crypto I get annoyed when people go, oh it's just another alternate.

Bitcoin is also an alternate to other technologies.  I hate how all of you are acting like the current bitcoin protocol is the end all be all project in the crypto scene. Satoshi brought true innovation and all of you are acting like there can't be any more for some reason.

So please next time something innovative is made don't just go, oh that's just another altcoin. Actually use your heads and look at the technology for what it's worth.

This idiotic thought process that some of you posses is exactly why a lot of you and a lot of people didn't get in early on Bitcoin. Because when faced with something new your underdeveloped/underpowered brains don't know how to process everything and you immediately call scam or fail on what you can't understand.

But btc were 1st, that mean that alt, it's all currencyes after btc, and btc it's a core of crypto currency, much usefull for many people. Btc Community is bigger then any alt community. After that, we are using name alt. Don't hate it, if you don't understand that.
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Progressing too quickly? on: August 20, 2014, 03:16:07 PM
I'm wondering if perhaps people might be turned off by bitcoin having so many different applications.

I feel as though bitcoin is finally gaining traction as a real currency alternative, and I wonder if other applications such as colored coins might cause people interested to shy away from having to learn too much at once. The progress is great, I just hope it doesn't keep itself from universal adoption through it's own extremely fast paced advances in tech.

Yes, applications do transactions faster, then fiats. But it need upgrade in security plan.
7  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coindesk Vs Coinmarketcap on: August 20, 2014, 03:13:24 PM
Coinmarketcap use to update all the time(or it seemed that way).  Now coindesk updates so quick and Coinmarketcap... not so much.

Are they using the same exchanges to find the price?  It seems they are always a tad different.

They are using usially time up upgrade of prices, coindesk better in price and news plan, in my opinion.
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crypto for the Masses - Israeli Bitcoin documentary film on: August 20, 2014, 03:10:34 PM
An independent team of Bitcoin enthusiasts is now raising funds for the feature-length documentary film "Crypto for the Masses".

The film will discuss what Bitcoin is, what it can do, to explain the flaws in the current state of the economy and to change the perception of the illusioned. It will be filmed in Israel and will feature mostly Israel's Bitcoin experts and activists, but it will be watched and push Bitcoin forward everywhere.

The trailer for the film is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-O--m7Uz80 (dialogue in Hebrew and English, subtitles in English).

The crowdfunding takes place at http://www.headstart.co.il/project.aspx?id=11322&lan=en-US. The goal is 94,500 ILS which is approximately $27,000. Bitcoin payments are not integrated into the Headstart platform, however you can pledge bitcoins in one of two ways:

1. Anonymous donations to 189kiya3XFc8g1vD2CfV1gTj58Cyzz72xZ. You will not get benefits for this.

2. Depositing bitcoins with Ariel Horwitz, also known as WiW. He can be reached at crypto@alefbit.com. You will get the same benefits as with donating through the Headstart platform, and if the drive fails, you will get the money back.

The film will be produced with the financial and professional support of the Israeli Bitcoin Association.

Join in and help making this a reality!

Wow, i see, that Israeli community so serrious in crypto industry. Lections course and domumentary film. But i don't think, that film is a good idea, but glad to see this.
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: English Bitcoin lectures in Israel on: August 20, 2014, 03:03:07 PM
As you may know, Israel has a very active Bitcoin community. One of its biggest hubs is the Meetup group, holding various events including biweekly lectures. Most of the content is in Hebrew, however occasionally we host a lecture in English. This thread will share videos of these lectures.

Special guest lectures:
Quantum Computing and Bitcoin (Vitalik Buterin, November 2013)
Fungibility, Privacy & Identity (Adam Back, February 2014)
Politics and the Bitcoin Protocol (Peter Todd, May 2014)
Tel Aviv Special Bitcoin Meetup July 2014 (lectures by Jack Liao and Marco Krohn)

English lectures by Israelis:
TechAviv Founders Club Dec 2013: The Bitcoin Revolution
Zerocash (Eli Ben-Sasson, April 2014)

Israel Bitcoin Think Tank:
Bitcoin Israel Think Tank - Episode 1 (Meni Rosenfeld, Vitalik Buterin, Ron Gross, Dominik Weil and Eli Sklar)

I'm glad to see that btc is rising, teaching in crypto currency industry is very important for community u and for development too.
10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Was the price raise in November mainly driven by the MtGox hackers? on: August 20, 2014, 02:54:43 PM
Latest investigations on the MtGox case suggest that hackers found a possibility to create new accounts with a fake (fiat) balance. They used this to buy Bitcoin and withdraw them. This buys could have been the main reason for the price raise last November. We have just written a blog post on it with more details: http://blog.fairlay.com/2014/08/connecting-the-dots-a-possible-connection-between-the-raise-in-november-mtgox-disaster-and-recent-price-drop/

Sorry, but it's delirium. If hackers can to do it, why they doesn't do fictional fiat wallets? Why only btc interested??
11  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: my theory about Mtgox fiasco on: August 19, 2014, 03:05:31 PM
My theory about the Mtgox fiasco is this:

Karpeles used mtgox's clients (fiat /btc) deposits to manipulate the market. He probably was doing that with the help of bots. For example, if he wanted to increase the price he was "borrowing" fiat from mtgox's depositors and with that fiat he was buying btc, creating an uptrend. As more mtgox's clients were buying bitcoins there was a moment when the clients who had fiat in their accounts and wanted to buy bitcoins couldn't  because Karpeles had already bought bitcoins with their money. So, at that point Karpeles had to sell the bitcoins that he had already bought in order to give the Mtgox's clients fiat to buy also. ( this also explains the huge lag, he needed time to do this).

So this strategy should had given Karpeles a lot of profit because he was buying cheap bitcoins with borrowed money (which caused an uptrend) and when he was forced to sell bitcoins (which were more expensive) to cover his clients needs, he was selling less, so he had profit in bitcoins.
But this is not true because there is also one more parameter, the liquidity. When he was forced to liquidate bitcoins he might had to sell more bitcoins than he had bought if liquidity was very low.  So the extra bitcoins had to be created from thin air which caused a btc fractional reserve. Same logic applies if he wanted to create a downtrend with a fiat fractional reserve as a consequence.

Good theory, but what do you think about buying mtgox now? Some company freezed a lot of acc's.
12  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mt Gox Claims buyers on: August 19, 2014, 02:55:48 PM

Has anyone been contacted by this company? they seem to want to offer to buy my MT Gox Claim but I'm not sure if theyre legit

http://mtgoxbitcoinbuyer.weebly.com/

I don't have acc, and didn't contacted with them, but i read about plan of that company, and i don't think, that acc's freeze is legit on buying mtgox.
Community need to safe their coins on acc by exchange or transaction it to another, but when they can't to do it, it's no legit, i think.
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Paper Wallet clients on: August 19, 2014, 02:42:39 PM
Many find paper money comforting and don't trust themselves using technology any more than necessary. I would like to see a paper mode for clients or even stand alone clients that don't display addresses. It won't be used for sending money to remote addresses over the internet, but instead will be used to print, load, sweep, and verify paper bit bills. Standard computer printers could print out a stack to be used like a checkbook. They could be designed to require a key card as well or any other multisignature security device. The top check will have a load and when swept, the value will go to the paper bill below in the series printed. I just see this as a way to remove the geek factor from Bitcoin for the masses.

It would be interesting to come up with a nice template for the notes. They could be printed in bulk without the actual codes in color and sold in stores. It would then just be a matter of printing out a checkbook full of sweepable bills.

Yes, you right, but how will it affect on btc geek community??? But, in my opinion, it would be nice. Good idea!
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who is Promoting Bitcoin? on: August 19, 2014, 02:35:21 PM
It appears to be an imbalance between Fud starters and BTC activist using mainstream media to grow awareness.
We understand that big money capitalist have rallied their Fudsuckers and lobbyist (5 from credit card companies at last count)... but what are we doing?
As investors we need to be willing to fight with creativity because we certainly can't out spend them.... Status quo is not good enough if we want to see a solid return!
As a starter there should be a clear understanding of who is leading the cause and where can we donate to these foundations.
I think there was a recent article about two Bitcoin US lobbyist.
The efforts by Coindesk and others should expand to a broader base that reaches media outlets non cyrpto folks follow.
For those with better information on who we need to support to increase exposure please share... Most don't know where to send contributions or how to help.
Thanks

For real, you can to check this forum, and planned you steps. I think, you will help btc community.

"EBay is in discussions about acceptance Bitcoin Braintree '
EBay is in talks with several companies to accept Bitcoin digital currency. EBay's Braintree, that payment software to companies like Airbnb and Uber, the currency could be introduced as currency.

EBay bought Braintree last year for $ 800 million. According to sources of The Wall Street Journal PayPal has talked with several companies that make Bitcoin transactions possible. One is Coinbase.
Mint on eBay
The conversations were about the acceptance of digital currency by Braintree. EBay and PayPal will, if a deal is closed over Braintree, do not even go directly accept Bitcoins. But, according to sources from The Wall Street Journal, this may change at a later stage.
Overstock.com and Expedia
Overtock.com and Expedia are part of the club of big companies that Bitcoins is already common currency. Overstock.com reports to expect that at the end of year 6 to 8 million of its sales with Bitcoins has been paid. Braintree processed before it was taken over a year more than 12 billion dollars in payments by eBay.
Bitcoins in Netherlands
In the Netherlands, among others at Thuisbezorgd.nl and Online Druggist pay. The coin The Dutch payment service provider (PSP) Qantani Bitcoins has also added to its range of online payment methods.

Real good news. Better then that http://www.coindesk.com/bank-canada-research-cryptocurrency-arbitrage-doesnt-exist/
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Canadian Bankers are Idiots on: August 15, 2014, 12:52:57 PM
Our national bank just concluded that arbitrage opportunities do not exist in cryptocurrency: http://www.coindesk.com/bank-canada-research-cryptocurrency-arbitrage-doesnt-exist/

Given the sheer number of people in our Co-op (and probably on this forum) who make money doing arbitrage with crypto, I find it surprising. These people are supposed to have PhDs

It's horrible, how it will be affect on btc rate?Huh
19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Good news everyone! on: August 15, 2014, 08:51:28 AM
I am a network guy and I work for a company that used to be one of the internet pioneers. Recently however, we have been sidestepped by other companies a bit,  but we are still around and trying to turn things around with new software that frankly is pretty awesome. Anyway, we had an all hands meeting the other day and after the meeting I went up to our CEO and asked him what's his opinion on taking BTC as a form of payment. I was expecting a very short answer that was negative, and to my surprise it was completely the opposite. He seemed very interested and asked me question after question about mining, MT GOX, alt-coins etc. We spoke  for a bout 5 minutes and afterwards he told me to send an email to some of the guys way up on the pole and CC him, which I did! I'm SO EXCITED! I feel like i just asked a girl out to prom Cheesy and she said welll.... maybe  LULZ.

That is real good news. Companies need to change their opinions about btc payment.
20  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Do Bitcoin exchanges allow market makers to short sell? on: August 15, 2014, 06:25:59 AM
If they do then..do they have borrowing arrangements set up, as happens with say, shares? are they using clients BTC?
I notice that on page 43 of the prospectus for http://www.digitalbtc.com/ it says.

Quote
Digital CC trades or proposes to trade digital currencies by using specialised
strategies which include arbitrage, buying long positions, selling short positions,
futures contracts and market making at exchanges (Bitcoin exchanges are
described below).

May be it's using only on fork exchanges.
