1  Other / MultiBit / Re: Multibit Classic 0.5.19 lost password (or bug) on: August 11, 2024, 10:56:17 AM

How can i restore my wallet and get access to my funds?

Can i try any more tools (or check for any bugs) or should i start bruteforcing it and pray for luck?

To try to brute force it you should check hashcat. There are some pretty useful rules

So my question is, would that be a password I chose or that Multibit assigned for me? If it's assigned then I think I'm screwed because I can't find anything saved anywhere... if I chose it myself I'll keep trying variations I've used over the years.
Definitely one you chose... MultiBit Classic, by default, creates wallets without a password. You have to explicitly add one to the wallet yourself.

If you have any experience with the command line and/or Python, you might find that btcrecover by gurnec (https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover) might be of some assistance to crack your password.

You can also use hashcat to try to recover your password. In case you were lost with command line and rules in hashcat, we can provide assistance
3  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: I have 26 out of 24 mnemonic words. Am I able to brute force still? on: August 10, 2024, 09:33:22 PM
Recovering this 26-word mnemonic phrase, assuming it follows BIP-39 and only knowing the order of 6 words, would take too much time to brute force and would be insufficient. To recover it, you should try to reduce the number of possibilities by, for example, gaining knowledge about the order of the remaining 14 words. This would significantly lower the number of possibilities and increase the chances of successfully recovering it through brute force. Otherwise the numbers are way too big

5  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Changing Hardware Wallets on: August 09, 2024, 11:58:50 PM
I'm about to switch from a Tangem wallet to a Coldcard Q. Tangem was my first ever HW wallet, so I don't have any experience "changing wallets". Is it better practice/security to generate a new seed phrase with the new wallet, and then send my BTC over from Tangem (testing with a smaller amount of course), or should I just restore my seed phrase from when I created the Tangem wallet? Appreciate any input, thanks!

If I were you, I’d definitely look into using an open-source device like Trezor or Passport. The way to go is to have a hot wallet (or a few) for your daily stuff and a cold wallet like Trezor for the bigger crypto stash. For hot wallets it depends what you need, but you can check out options like MetaMask, Electrum or Trust Wallet (which is partially open-source).
