Hi ecxcn

Hope you are doing well. Please let me know if you still have the issue.

Warm regards
2  Other / MultiBit / Re: Multibit classic - Wallet locked when it wasn't before on: July 23, 2024, 12:06:40 AM
Hi, hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

I'm trying to get funds off multibit classic but it is saying my password is incorrect. What I don't understand is that i'm pretty sure it was not password protected last year when I transferred a small amount in and out. I remember not needing a password at the time. That said, I do have some passwords so they must be for something.

So my questions:
- Is it possible to have a multibit classic wallet without a password or am I just wrong?
- Can backup wallets have different passwords?
- What are my options? I have seed words but trying just now on another app they seem to be for an empty wallet.

Thanks for any help. I can't figure out how I did it a year ago but cannot now...

Do u still have this issue? I can handle it with my program I developed if u still have the issue.

Hi there, apologies in advance for this long and technically naive post!

I bought some Bitcoin a few years ago and stored them in a Multibit wallet on my Mac. I have 2 versions of Multibit stored - v0.5.15 and v0.5.18.  The wallet is saved on an old Mac that I no longer use.

I have barely looked at the wallet since then. My intention was to buy and hold as a speculative investment. I once transferred the BTC out of the wallet onto Coinbase and then back again within a few minutes but aside from that, the wallet has not been used for anything other than storage.

After seeing the market value of BTC climb steeply during the last few weeks I logged onto the old Mac and opened Multibit v0.5.18. I learned that Multibit has been out of support for some time and that I needed to transfer the BTC to a new wallet. The wallet wouldn't sync with the Network but I read instructions online for creating a private key that I could then use to 'sweep' the BTC into a new wallet with.

When I tried to create a private key I found that I was being asked for a password. I don't remember ever setting a password for the wallet, nor do I remember needing to use a password when transferring to Coinbase and back. I have spent the last 48 hours searching everywhere for a record of a password but have found nothing. This is very very unusual for me - I have a tried and tested system of emailing abbreviated versions of important info like passwords to myself but cannot find any such record for the Multibit wallet. I might be wrong, but I'm almost certain that I never set one. I've also tried countless variations of my main passwords but they have all been rejected.

I also tried opening v0.5.15 of the Multibit software and it behaved differently to v0.5.18. Firstly, it synced with the network quite quickly (v0.5.18 hadn't even started to sync after having it open for several hours). Secondly the wallet appeared temporarily without a password being set. I was able to generate a private key without inputting a password and the option to "add password" appeared in the drop down menu. This clearly indicates at the very least that it was possible to create wallets in Multibit that were not password protected but I think it also indicates that my wallet did not have a password. However, I've tried sweeping the wallet with the private key into other wallets and it's either not been recognised or has indicated that no funds are in the source wallet. I've checked the wallet on bitref and it shows the the BTC is still stored in there.

I've got a horrible feeling that this means that I won't be able to recover my bitcoin. I'm not very tech savvy so struggle to follow the discussion on a lot of the Bitcoin message boards that I've looked at. I suppose my key questions are:

1. Does anyone know of a bug in the versions of Multibit that I've been using, which would 'impose' a password? If so, could a standard password have been applied?

2. I saw somewhere that it might be possible to discern either the password or the private key from the underlying data files. Having exported and imported the BTC, I have the transaction records but wouldn't know where to start to try and decrypt them, if such a thing was even possible.

Thanks for reading. If anyone has any smart ideas I'd be extremely grateful!

Sounding like a broken record here  Angry but I've got an old Multibit classic wallet with bitcoin in it. I set it up way back in 2013 and only used it for 2 transactions and there is some not quite a full bitcoin (enough for me to want to get it out).
I've got the private key files and the wallet files but I can't unencrypt it. I searched for a previously unencrpyted file but no luck.

I'm using Hashcat and BTCRecover with my limited knowledge.

To test my understanding of Hashcat and BTCRecover, I created a new encrypted wallet in Multibit and then tried to use Hashcat and BTCRecover to break into it but to no avail even though I knew the password. I created a token/ word list and tried that but that didn't work.

It only worked when I had the exact password in the token/word list. As an example the password used was James2021 and my token list only had 4 passwords to try (james, James20, James2000, james2) and this even couldn't crack the password unless I inputted James2021 in the token list, I was unable to break into the test wallet.

For hashcat, this is what I used >>> hashcat.exe -a 3 -m22700 wallethash.txt wordlist.txt
For BTCRecover, this is what I used >>>  btcrecover-master>python btcrecover.py --tokenlist tokens.txt --wallet newwallet.key --no-dupchecks --no-eta

I thought that Hashcat and BTCRecover would take token list and use the passwords in there and then try iterations of the words listed in the token list but seems I'm doing something wrong or my understanding of these tools is flawed. Any help???  Cry

I don't want to try the main wallet as I can't even use a sample Multibit wallet as proof of concept.  Huh

Hello.

I need help.

I created my Multibit Classic wallet in late 2013, made everything just as it recommended (password encrypted my wallets), tested it (received, sent, again received some BTC)... and moved it to the cloud storage for years.

I never used it since then and yesterday i decided to send some funds.

1. I found my wallet backups + Multibit 0.5.15 executables, installed the wallet and waited until blockchain sync. It took quite some time.
2. I successfully opened my wallets, it showed how much funds do i have etc.
3. I have 2 wallets. 1 has small amount of BTC (test one) and 2nd is my main wallet with a large sum. Both are password protected. 2 passwords are different.
4. I sent a small portion of BTC from test wallet successfully (entered password).
5. I tried to send BTC from my main wallet and got error "The wallet password Incorrect".
I am 90% sure I remember my password (i have it written on the paper along with test wallet password which works).
I tried all passwords and combinations i can imagine - same result.

I tried to research for a bug and found out many posts about similar problems.

I tried to use this library
https://github.com/HardCorePawn/multibit_recovery

My result is :
incorrect password.

Then I tried to get the private key from my test wallet. And i got the key as a result (password worked).

How can i restore my wallet and get access to my funds?

Can i try any more tools (or check for any bugs) or should i start bruteforcing it and pray for luck?
