Finally ! It's done and the menu is visible.
How?
I have installed gnome-shell, though that didn't do it. Previously i have removed compiz but it reinstalled itself. Finally I went to .bitcoin and deleted everything except for blk0001.dat and blk0002.dat and restarted Bitcoin.
As soon as it started I saw the menu up at the upper left! With no problem I could encrypt the new empty wallet so I stopped everything and brought back the regular wallet. It is now synchronizing but I don't understand why it takes its time - after all all blocks are already here... and it says 19 active connections to bitcoin network!
we'll see

Do you mean that u miss the menu wich normally is in left corner ??
Try righter mouse click in the screen and the menu will pop up
or ctrl esc works also, but i don,t now if this is what u mean GL Yes. the menu with 'File, Settings, Help' never shows up, as already mentioned a few times. And unfortunately it appears to be a bit more complicated than just right clicking or pressing Ctr+Esc (Ctr+Esc does nothing and it does not let right-click in Ubuntu )

try moving the Bitcoin window to the far upper left corner of the desktop window. ...
no, it doesn't work either...
|
|
|
try maximizing Bitcoin window and see if menu works then.
Unfortunately maximizing did not do it either

' install unity-2d ' did not do much except for removing some items no longer needed.
' metacity --replace ' gave me a new desktop but Bitcoin was same with no toolbar.
Going back to ' unity --reset ' gave me back the familiar desktop and also a second terminal with a Bitcoin specific error:
' :~$ metacity --replace Window manager warning: Invalid WM_TRANSIENT_FOR window 0xc00004 specified for 0xc00002 (bitcoin-qt). '
What does that mean?
As to the link for " laucher-and-window-menu-bar-missing-after-12-04-upgrade ' - it seems that the people had more problems than me and that probably needs to be done carefully one by one.

............ if you can't give us specifics. or even describe your problem precisely. .................... Thanks Kokjo , but I don't know what more to say. 'Bitcoin Wallet' shows up promptly and the downloads are done in a reasonable time. Overview, Send Coins, REceive Coins, Transactions, Address Book , Export are all there and working fine. The only thing that is missing is the Toolbar with ('File Settings Help' - thus I cannot change the password, nor can I send coins via Tor (should I ever want that) nor can I tell you precisely what version I have. Hope that this makes sense

unity --reset
I did ' unity --reset ' and it showed errors but I am not in a position to understand these: http://paste.debian.net/202767/Thank you very much for taking the time

Ubuntu is 12.04.1 and Bitcoin must be 0.7.1 by now (I trust that Matt Corallo has done the upgrade in the repos).
But what difference does that make?
Why would the toolbar not show up in the previous version?
And why does it now show up in this version?
Hope that somebody can help

Using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Bitcoin 0.7.0
All updates done.
But Toolbar ('File Settings Help') does not show up.
Otherwise Bitcoin works fine. Wallet was encrypted before and continues to work.

In bitcoin-0.6.3-linux I have removed the encrypted wallet and stored it securely elsewhere. When I restarted Bitcoin, it made a new, unencrypted wallet. As said, it is not encrypted.
How can i encrypt the new wallet so it marked at the right lower corner as closed and securely encrypted? Only at that point would I feel comfortable in placing coins there.

In ver 059b I was able to access my wallet on a Live-CD - a popup asked for the seeds and the wallet came up. But in 061 I get error: ~$ electrum Traceback (most recent call last): File “/usr/local/bin/electrum”, line 148, in <module> gui = gui.ElectrumGui(wallet) File “/usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/electrum/gui_lite.py”, line 36, in __init__ with open(“data/style.css”) as style_file: IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: ‘data/style.css’
I realize that the download probably was for 060 . But same error.

Yes 'reg ' , it is always good to ask questions.
BTW, ' highlinght, copy, cut, paste ' can be done in 3 ways after highlighting something: 1. from the 'Edit' menu at the upper left 2. from the right click of the mouse 3. from the keyboard : Ctrl+x, Ctrl+c, Ctrl+v,
It is a good practice to know all 3 - in different situations, the one or the other will be feasible and save time

I didn't create any new addresses.
Personally I think that nothing should be missing - neither transactions nor btc. Even if you did not make that frequent backups. Please create a new address to see if the missing transactions reappear

i do not know how to view clipboard?
Using the clipboard is a very basic and important tool. Once you click on "Copy to Clipboard" it is already in your Clipboard and ready to Paste. If I may, I would suggest that you familiarize yourself with : ' highlinght, copy, cut, paste '

All problems are now fixed. Bitcoin shows up in seconds (certainly less than 30 seconds) and happily does the downloading of the latest blocks. Unbelievable easy fix! Thanks

Thanks '2112 ' please let me know if there is anything I can do. I am on cable with no problems downloading. Bitcoin has started but is not showing after some 2.5 hours and I have to leave home and shut down computer. 'sk_wait_data' is still waiting. After starting Bitcoin, System Monitor shows Status going from Uninterruptible-->Running-->Sleeping . Memory shows about 30 MiB. But the Waiting Channel after syncing gets stuck in 'sk_wait_data' . Already tried to Change Priority in 'Nice' to -20 but to no avail.
I tried to google and see what it is waiting for but all the information about 'sk_wait_data' is well above my level.
I use lucid. Any help appreciated.

Still not working.
When I start '...../bitcoin-0.4.0-linux/bin/32/bitcoin' or '...../bitcoin-0.4.0-linux/bin/32/bitcoind' i can see in the System Monitor that bitcoin is 'Running' : %CPU goes up to 80 and it shows the port# as ID - but then it quiets down and it is 'Sleeping" and the CPU stays at 0. And it stays so apparently forever.
And 'sudo netstat -tanp | grep -w 8333' gives: tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:8333 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 3440/bitcoin
' kill -9 3440 ' gets executed with no comment. And afterwards : " killall -w bitcoin " gives: 'bitcoin: no process found'
2 or 3 days ago bitcoin started and I let it run overnight to download all the blocks. Afterwards it started sporadically but now it again does not start at all.
I would very much appreciate to hear any additional suggestions to solve this problem.
Thanks

Using Ubuntu 10.04.
I had to reinstall Bitcoin. First I deleted /bitcoin-0.4.0-linux as well as /.bitcoin and reinstalled bitcoin-0.4.0-linux from SourceForge.net. After untarring I have a new /bitcoin-0.4.0-linux and a new /.bitcoin in home.
But it does not run. Keeps telling me that it 'Cannot obtain a lock on data directory' and is probably already running .
I checked on this forum and tried 'netstat -tanp | grep -w 8333' - don't really know what it means but it gave me: tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:8333 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1579/bitcoin
Please walk me through this . (yes : I have a backup of the wallet!)
Thanks
