1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Comic: Bank Scam, 2 versions of the same story on: August 10, 2011, 08:17:11 PM
Use my bank! 3/4 held offline! Why settle for only 1/2 back when you might get 3/4 back if I feel like it!

3  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Modified Kernel for Phoenix 1.5 on: August 09, 2011, 11:00:04 PM
Right now, the kernel is optimized for SDK 2.5 and the 68xx and 5xxx cards and assuming you pick the best memory clock speed for your card (somewhere around 1/3 of your core clock).

I think for the foreseeable future those cards will be doing the lions share of the work, so I would say you are on the right track.

Why not make two separate kernels then?

VECTORS4 might one day be the better alternative, instead of doing all that work then why not start now and keep pace?

Hey, I've been using this modified kernel for a couple weeks now, I quite like it, just wanted to say thanks.

7  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Installing Bitcoin on an encrypted USB Stick on: August 08, 2011, 04:34:49 PM
(and yes, my bitcoin client is on a different computer than my miner)

I've heard this advice before, but so far no one has explained it. Why is it important to have your bitcoin client on a different computer than your miner?

This is a good open source Windows program for securely erasing files.

http://eraser.heidi.ie

Note: No secure/wipe/erase program will work on SSDs (Solid State Drives).

Thanks, I was looking for something like this.

If you are making a mining rig you don't need 8gb of memory or a fast cpu and a high quality hard drive.

All you need is a really good gpu, any processor (that will run it), any hard drive, and 2gb of ram.

I have a radeon hd 6950 and a radeon 5850 and I'm happy with both of them if you are looking for recommendations.

Yeah, reddit is a generally a very friendly and knowledgeable community, although as it grows obviously this is somewhat diluted, but overall I would still say the quality is high.
13  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why would pool hopping matter? on: August 08, 2011, 04:03:29 AM
So, is pool hopping generally considered creating?

I think it is more just considered being a dick.

In some pools your pay out is decided by your ratio of completed shares, compared to other peoples ratio of completed shares those pools really encourage pool hopping because people come in with huge rigs do a massive amount of shares over a short period of time then leave and still manage to get a good payout because when the block is finished they will still have a larger ratio of completed shares than many of the miners with weaker mining equipment. So basically they make a disproportionate amount of money compared to others.

Yes, good, pack up your miner. Only then will your journey to the darkside be complete.
15  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: if bitcoin dies... on: August 07, 2011, 10:23:44 PM
Nothing ever dies.

People still use programs written in Cobol and if you know it then you can still make good money as a Cobol programmer.
