2  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Why would you mine with anything BUT a PPS pool? on: August 31, 2011, 03:46:13 PM
I've started mining at rfcpool which just switched to PPLNS with 0% fee. I've checked out quite a few pools and to be honest, this site looks like it's run by someone that knows what they are doing. The coders hang out in their irc channel, which is a plus.

I'm mining there now as well.  So far I'm getting more BTC/day than I was on BTCguild.  I agree that the site is well done.  Simple yet functional design that supplies me with all of the info I care about.  It's fast & secure and there aren't any ads.  Doesn't seem too popular just yet but I think as more people check it out they'll gain some traction.
3  Economy / Goods / Re: WTS 2 PCIE extenders: 1x to x16 with Molex Adapters on: August 19, 2011, 10:21:32 PM
I have a pair of PCIE extenders: 1x to x16 with Molex Adapters (they get power from the PSU not the motherboard).  I ordered these a week or so ago in anticipation of a build that I was planning.  Well, plans change and I don't need either of them now.  I paid $25 for these (each) and I'd like to get a little bit of my money back.  I am asking for 1.5 BitCoins each or 3 Bitcoins for them both and I will ship them anywhere in the USA for Free.

I'd like one of these.  (US Buyer)
4  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: This is just getting nuts on: August 19, 2011, 08:56:41 PM
I don't quite understand why people are still buying mining hardware. Currently it will take about a minimum of 4 months to pay off one card.

In terms of interest that's almost 300%.

I think that this concept uniquely appeals to us computer "techie" types as well.  The fact that we can build a machine that essentially "creates" money is compelling.....as is having an excuse to buy more stuff and get pretty brown boxes from newegg.
5  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: LinuxCoin A lightweight Debian based OS with everything ready to go. on: August 17, 2011, 06:12:45 PM
I tried several times to install this on a 4GB Memory Stick.  Installs fine, I get the bootup menu, but then when it starts up my monitor says it can't display the resolution.  It's an old dell with a 1280x1024 max resolution.

I've read through this thread but so far haven't found any solution to this issue.

Other info:

Radeon 6870
ECS 945GCD-M(1.0) Intel Atom 330 Intel 945GC Micro ATX Motherboard/CPU Combo
1GB Ram

I saw that someone else in this thread ran into that issue, any progress?  I can get in via SSH fine, just can't get into the gui.
6  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 2 of 4 GPUs not recognized in Ubuntu 11.04... on: August 17, 2011, 01:15:00 PM
So I followed this guide to installing the mining software onto 11.04. Everything loaded OK, or appeared to.

Quick question on that...the instructions you reference have this step:

svn checkout http://svn.json-rpc.org/trunk/python-jsonrpc

Which I was never able to get to work.  Did you find that elsewhere?
7  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoins on Ebay and buying with paypal on: August 16, 2011, 11:45:23 PM
Trying to sell Bitcoins on Ebay just seems awkward as all sin, given the other available options.

I would agree...it's interesting though that the people selling them on ebay seem to be asking higher prices.  Perhaps some people are more comfortable purchasing at e-bay instead of mtgox or others, just because of the name recognition.
8  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The new Bitcoin logo on: August 16, 2011, 11:42:36 PM
The "locks" around the edge (at least, I think that's what they are?) would never show up clearly if the image gets much smaller.

The coloring is pretty, but a bit.. "much".

The "current" logo:

Is simple, it's not confusing (the "dollar sign" marks in the B itself lend itself to be viewed as a monetary unit), and... well, it works.
I like this better than the one in the OP, nothing small that's going to get overlooked or scrunched too far.
9  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mining machine VS space heater on: August 12, 2011, 09:13:57 PM

NO!!! All electric heaters are exactly 100% efficient. 1000W of electricity in is 1000W of heat out.

I have a hard time believing that all electric heaters are 100% efficient but I'm sure it's close.

As for a miner, your power supply might be 20% efficient (at generating heat), but then you have the efficiency of the other components to take into account.  I've worked with servers that put out enough heat to rival a space heater.

Ok so spammers are kept out by letting people spam this thread?

I don't think most spammers would last long enough to post 5 spams and it keeps the other forums clean.  I like the idea, even though I'm not up to my minimums yet.

Been mining & browsing the forum for a few days...wish I'd found this site about 6 months ago!!

In Texas and it sucks having my computers generate so much heat, I'm ready for winter.
