1  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Losing a wallet and total bitcoins on: October 14, 2010, 08:23:01 PM
yes, but that means THEY have to do it!!
Would the average Joe think about it??
I don't think so.
2  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Losing a wallet and total bitcoins on: October 14, 2010, 05:56:04 PM
come to think of it, it's totally unfair.
Bitcoin is neither fair nor unfair, it just is how it is. Each person decides, based on how Bitcoin is, whether it's worthwhile for them to use it.

Having said that, better backup options in the standard client would be great, and I'm sure they'll come in time. It's an open source project, so you're free to be part of the solution.

i wish i had the brains Smiley

really think the bitcoin setup program should address this problem.
either ask the user for a backup location and backup after every personal transaction or some other solution.

at the minute it's left to the user.
which is not really fair if your system goes down.
fatally!!

edit:
come to think of it, it's totally unfair.
this needs to be more secure if you can lose your entire bc account due to just carelessness or bad luck!!
wouldn't get many bankers using a system like that!

i've been running about (average) 1300 for the last 3 weeks.

with enhancements. oli Smiley

i don't really mind, but my cpu usage is 100%, and it is affecting my electricity bill.
strangely lol Smiley
So stop generating! But don't stop using bitcoins just because you can't generate them, silly. Let's try to think of something that you offer in exchange for bitcoins. What are you good at? What are your interests and hobbies? If it's not too personal, what do you do for a living? I bet we can think of something that will bring in bitcoins much more quickly and easily than generating them.

Edit: I have a fairly fast computer, but I have stopped generating for the most part because that's not the point of bitcoin anymore. I leave one core running just to help the network, but it's more of a donation than an investment to generate bitcoins. In short, we're all basically in the same boat. It's next to impossible for us to generate bitcoins.

wow!
good questions!

before i answer, i'll ask you, how many bitcoins do you have?
Smiley
then i'll answer nearly anything you like lol

i'm a detail fitter/hand adjuster for Bombardier/Shorts
that's what i do!!

4 weeks of cpu time running at max. and it DID make a difference!!!!
cpu was at 100% all the time!

nothing to show for it.
so,
have to say, goodbye to this.
Cheesy
If you leave now, you'll be missing out on a great opportunity, which is not to spend electricity on bitcoins, but rather to receive payment from a community that is eager to spend money in exchange for your unique talent or skill set. Best of luck to ya!

i don't want to leave.
but, i just can;t afford to wait forever in the hope something might happen. ie, generate a block?
no, 4 weeks worth, is not worth it Smiley

There's absolutely no point in generating bitcoins if you don't have anything to buy. Beside, it's a lot easier to get bitcoins if you do something that people might want to buy.

yes.
but wasn't generating bitcoins!

yes, after 4 weeks 100%cpu time, i hoped i'd have something?
that's 4 weeks electricy that i wouldn't have used (maybe) normally!
i don't mind that.
but something to show might be nice Smiley

You don't earn Bitcoins just because your computer does something.. It's not like distributing a calculation among the partecipants.

You earn Bitcoins by luck. The client is born to use the computer to help the network. But if you want you can enable coin generation, and if you're lucky your computer will win sort-of a "scavenger hunt" game against all the partecipants. Adding computing resources helps your luck, but does not guarantee success nor speed increment.

I think you should read the papers first...

yes, i probably should Smiley

luck
that counts me out then hehe Cheesy

14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / how much electricity before? on: July 30, 2010, 07:42:27 PM
like i've said.
been running this nearly 24/7 for the last 3 weeks
still zip.
there must be an incentive to use this.
i don't expect to make anything, but with 18 connections and 100% cpu time, a bit of reparation would be nice.
something for the project owner to think about perhaps? Smiley
15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: *** ALERT *** Upgrade to 0.3.6 ASAP! on: July 30, 2010, 04:51:12 PM
would an auto-update function built into bc be possible?
It's something that I have already suggested here :|

17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Panhandling on: July 30, 2010, 03:57:50 PM
bc's running full tilt for nearly 3 weeks,
not a bitcoin in sight, but plenty of 'eeks'

my processor says 'please give me a rest'
i say 'just shut it you. and just do your best'

cpu says 'no please, can't take much more of this'
says me 'aye right, you're taking the piss!'

cpu 'ok, promise, i'll make you a mint!'
alas so far, like real life, i'm still fecking skint'

are satoshi and Olipro working together?
if not, any chance you could? Smiley

i'm well pleased with the speed enhancements Olipro is making, but i would like bc to be secure!

and with that addition, I've broken over 5000khash/s for the first time.

I've updated the link above, so just redownload.

New Link please

just click on the link he provided before.
it's been updated Smiley
20  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin x64 for Windows on: July 29, 2010, 04:52:31 PM
OK, finally got around to doing the builds, thanks to the fact Satoshi is now using the crypto++ stuff I've been able to build it with VS without there being any performance difference between it and the Intel compiler, so with any luck we should have good stability.

Please note that the x86 and x64 builds are not equal; the x64 version uses the full x64 SHA256 ASM code.

I'm getting close to 5000khash/s on the x64 build and about 200k less on the x86 build (so no doubt the more cores you have the more you'll notice the difference)

anyway, grab it here

excellent work you're doing!
when (if) i manage to generate some coins, i'll make sure to pass some your way  Grin
