archive.org has no history of the site.  I think you'd have better luck selling it (or at least having the content valued) if you actually made the content available for potential purchasers to view.  Is there any advantage to parking it while you're trying to sell it?

Gold may be a commodity, but unless you're planning to produce something with it, it's just another currency.  Trading to gold directly reduces friction, but that doesn't increase stability unless you're planning to offer a long-term fixed exchange rate.

The person who is selling gold for bitcoins will still sell those bitcoins on an exchange for legacy currency so he can re-stock his bullion supply and pay his expenses/cost of living, so the net effect is the same.  Until that gold seller can re-stock his inventory by buying gold at wholesale prices using only bitcoin, and pay his rent, taxes and put food on his table using only bitcoin, the bitcoins will still need to be exchanged for legacy currency by someone in the chain.

Gold is also a deflationary currency and yet its price is skyrocketing.

But if people were mining gold faster than people were buying it, it too would be losing value.

A lot of the people in Bitcoin are just treating it as an investment, but there are a lot of people, myself included, who have actually spent some coins on businesses that take Bitcoin. I honestly think the recent value drop has more to do with the fact that markets just change than anything. There's certainly been enough unrest in pretty much every other market the last couple years -- to expect that Bitcoin wouldn't experience some of the same is unrealistic.

Anything that makes investors flock to "safe bets" like government-issued bonds is going to hit Bitcoin to some extent because right now we simply have the fiat value set primarily by traders and speculators, and there is currently no real reason to buy bitcoins for the purpose of spending them. If that were to change the whole definition of the exchanges' markets could change as well.

That there'd be Bitcoin conferences in 2012 shouldn't have surprised anyone so it doesn't really qualify as a "big announcement" in my book.

How interesting the 2013 cruise will be will depend a lot on whether it's a floating convention restricted to Bitcoin participants or whether they're just going to make a group booking on a normal cruise and try to hold a conference in that context.
