3  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The Future of Bitcoin is Biometric authentication and identification on: November 07, 2014, 02:20:09 PM
Forget about the financial 'geniuses' trying to figure out the true value of BTC. And don't worry about how and why bitcoin may or may not fail.

Digital crypto currencies are the future and simply an evolution of the current credit and debit card networks we are using right now.

One the hurdles bitcoin has to overcome before it will ever become adopted by the mainstream is one of ease of use.

It's pretty hard to fuck up using a credit or debit card.. and even if you do the bank and credit card companies will generally cover you as a consumer. Merchants get the shaft of course.

Bitcoin's semi anonymity is great except it's as insecure on a social level as paper money. I don't want to be in a dark alley making a 10k transaction with someone i don't know for a physical item i can't test or return.

Wallet addresses need to be bound to an identity so reputation and trust can be established thereby building a framework of security and accountability.

The semi-anonymous nature of bitcoin also lends to it's lack of user friendliness. Most people simply don't have the understanding or knowledge required to secure and use their wallets. It's to fricking hard and stressful when you have a large number of BTC. Bare minimum we can agree it's a lot harder and more stressful than it is to use a debit or credit card backed by 'money' in a bank.

I understand there is a lack of trust in banks and financial institutions and that is the appeal of bitcoin. but bitcoin doesn't become mainstream without being EASIER to use.

This is where biometric wallets will come into play. If bitcoin is not the first to adopt this it will fail. And if it is the first to adopt it then we know we have pioneered the beast system where buying and selling cannot be done without the mark.

Your biometric information generates a key tied to your wallet. QRcode is replaced or exists alongside your biometrics. This is coming. A company like blockchain.info is surely looking at this. Adoption rate will soar through the roof when wallets are inexplicably tied to identity. Everything falls into place.

this is cool! bitcoin is not doomed! is is going to a higher level!!!

5  Bitcoin / BitcoinJ / Re: how to get the balance of your address in bitcoinj on: November 07, 2014, 02:02:32 PM
I want to develop some apps with java .

But when  I  try to get the balance for a special btc address  from my local  blockchain(local database) .

I don't know how to load the database(may be you call the storedblock class).

I have download the official database and it seems don't work.

As i have checked the old topics in this bbs ,there is a requirement of special database . named    *******.blockchain.

I want to ask ,where to download that type of blockchain.

Thank you very much.

Keep it up and hope you can find what you need ... Wink

6  Bitcoin / BitcoinJ / Re: Using BitcoinJ in .NET (C#) on: November 07, 2014, 01:55:40 PM
Hello! I'm trying to develop a Bitcoin app for the Windows Store. I'm doing this like a hobby, so in many things I'm still new to this.
I've seen that many programs use BitcoinJ, but as the name implies, it's for Java. I've found some .NET ports, but they are from 2011, so I don't think they are that reliable.
But then I found about a program called IKVM, which can convert a Java library to a .NET one.

As this is a very delicate subject (an app that handles money), I would like to ask you: Is it OK if I follow this approach? Or maybe I should manually port it to .NET? (which will take me a long time since I'm still in university)

What are your opinions?

Thanks for sharing this nice and informative post...
7  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: My experience across 4 mining pools on: November 07, 2014, 01:48:11 PM
Hi all,

I have been mining small scale for a number of months now with a couple of antminers. I had hacked mine to concurrently run on up to nine different pools (http://bitcoinsinireland.com/antminer-s1-mining-more-than-3-pools/ based on what I found at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=623672.0.

So I've reviewed the various pools, looking at their interface, options etc. I have gotten a lot of feedback on reddit saying that the numbers don't scale up (i'm running about 450ghs) so I've qualified all of the reviews with that, but i'm hoping to get some data to put alongside the review from people with several terahashes.

I'm working my way through every pool at http://bitcoinsinireland.com/list-of-mining-pools-who-have-mined-bitcoins/ which I got from Blocktrail, and trying to see which are active, which are dead, which are public and which are private.

If people know any that are dead, it would save me some time so please let me know.

So for the reviews, I have done http://bitcoinsinireland.com/discus-fish-aka-f2pool-bitcoin-mining-pool-review/ , http://bitcoinsinireland.com/eligius-bitcoin-mining-pool-review/ , http://bitcoinsinireland.com/bitcoin-affiliate-network-mining-pool-review/ and http://bitcoinsinireland.com/ghash-io-bitcoin-mining-pool-review/ so far, and will be doing Slush, BTC Guild, Ozco.in and Polmine in my next batch of four.

I also am looking for ideas for my next four, so please let me know any major ones that I should be doing.

All constructive feedback is welcome, I know I'm just me and it's my opinion, but there's a load of new people coming in, and I'm trying to look at all of the pools through the same lens between now and Christmas, and hopefully have a good way for some pool owners to see what the competition is up to to improve their interfaces.

Thanks!

Jamie

9  Economy / Lending / Re: [EDU] Exercise caution when lending to new users! on: November 07, 2014, 01:15:56 PM
There has been a massive influx of new users requesting loans lately, and as a result, lots of people being scammed. It seems that Tomatocage's thread isn't enough, so let me just say this:

Do not loan to new users unless you can get collateral OR if they are very trusted due to high-risk services they provide (examples: gambling sites, currency exchange sites), because the chances of them defaulting/scamming are 90%+.

What defines a "new" user?

  • Anyone who is a Jr. Member
  • Anyone who has registered <1 month ago
  • Anyone with less than 100 posts
  • Anyone whose posts mainly consist of spam and/or meaningless posts such as "+1" and "nice post"
  • Anyone who refuses to provide collateral or ID for large loans (a general guideline is >0.1 BTC) or states that they can not give it may not be new, but is untrustworthy.
  • Anyone who you think is a scammer, because in the Lending sub-forum, 90% of the time, you're probably right.

There has been an influx of people giving loans as high as .85 BTC (remember, that's $100! Edit: At $1000 (per BTC), that's $850, at $500, that's $425.) to newbies who have just registered, and shortly after been stabbed in the back. Don't do it.

What is good collateral for a loan? (From best to worst)

  • #1: Alternate stable and well acknowledged cryptocurrencies
  • #2: Securities and shares such as TAT.ASICMINER
  • #3: Anything that can be traded in somewhere for a secure cash/Bitcoin value quickly
  • #4: Physical items such as an iPad

Or, if you can not get collateral:

  • Identification that is clear, verified and can be linked to you and trace you Note: This has been less and less commonly accepted recently due to the relative difficulty of doing anything productive with a scammer's ID.

If someone is requesting a loan and meets any of the "new" user criteria, do not loan to them unless you can get collateral. For your own sake.

Also: Invaluable advice from Boelens on bad collateral:

Alright, so, many people have been asking for loans, providing completely no collateral, or not knowing what collateral is. I saw Nimda make a small post on it in a loan topic, but figured I've seen this having explained so many times I figured I'd make a quick topic on it.

What does NOT count as good collateral:
  • Your accounts on anything like Steam, or any other game site. Why? First of all, it's an account, they're not that easy to sell and while you may have 1,000$ in value on there it is not worth 1,000$. Also, you still most likely have e-mail access to it, and you could go to support saying you got hacked. Also, most Terms of Services do not allow the trading of accounts. This is a bad way to provide collateral and I doubt anyone would accept this.
  • ID card, or any other personal identification. This is great information to supply upon getting a loan, but this is NOT collateral. Often people do offer it as collateral but generally it is not worth much, because the worst you could do is find personal information and post it online, which is nasty, but some people won't mind, or use a fake ID.

Tell me if I missed anything. Just figured this is a quick good small guideline.

To add to this: Gift Cards are also terrible collateral. Not only are they hard to sell for their full value (you'll probably get more like 50-80%), like with all GC sales, they can be fraudulently purchased meaning that you either have the GC balance zeroed out before you can use it, or you use it and then get left holding the bag when the police investigate.

is it id only and you can have loans?
