I recently did a coinbase purchase as well.  Went pretty smooth.  They do a pretty good job of linking with your bank account for easy transfers...they have to validate by sending some pennies over, similar to paypal.

BitcoinCity.us is a directory and review site of physical businesses (brick & mortar) that accept bitcoin. 
Anyone can add a listing, but all businesses are verified by BitcoinCity to ensure that they actually accept Bitcoin. 
We are currently focusing on US businesses only.
