As a poker site, surely they need to verify your age and ensure that there are no clone accounts. Otherwise they run the risk of having colluding accounts on a table.

From what I gather, it shares the same technology as bitcoin (in terms of the blockchain) but it can only be generated by reddit, as opposed to mined.

Personally still haven't found the use of altcoins.
