1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Don't Black People Use Bitcoins? on: January 12, 2015, 04:58:21 AM
Simple question: I'd like to discuss the demographics of the bitcoin community.

Why are there no people of color promoting bitcoin? What is it about bitcoin that disproportionately attracts white males? Could this extreme lack of diversity be ultimately harmful to bitcoin?

I've been following the bitcoin phenomenon for several months now. I've watched hundreds of youtube videos, read the blogs, seen the posts here, seen the conference footage from NYC... and until Bill Cosby I don't think I've seen a single African-American. OK that's not entirely true, I once spotted a dude who was in the onlyonetv studios once between broadcasts and he didn't speak at all.

From my perspective at the moment it seems the bitcoin proponents are almost entirely rich, white males with the occasional bored-looking female hanging around... Bitcoin, in a sense, could be viewed as a mechanism for prolonging the economic and social dominance of white males at the expense of everyone else. As we move towards a less racist, less sexist, more egalitarian society... Will bitcoin be a step backwards? [Well obviously it'll be a step forwards for us, but its going to be worse for everyone else]

Uhm well Black people, and whole lot of other people do use Bitcoins. I guess your title was worded wrong, because yeah we don't see many minorities talking about it in the media, but in our meetup group we see people from all backgrounds. Little light on the female gender, however...

2  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How does one get started in devlopment for Bitcoin? on: January 05, 2015, 07:54:36 PM
Thanks for the answer, I am just looking to get some practice coding so I can try and one day get a job as a programmer, everywhere I apply I don't get many call returns because everyone wants experience.  Its hard to get experience if no one gives you the chance to get some, so I want to start working on side projects to show them I can code

If you are at that level, I'd say start by making your own website / blog.

As far as Bitcoin goes, the easiest app you can make would be a price ticker, like preev.com or zeroblock. So if I where you, I'd make one of those.

I'm working on a public address watcher which will display total bitcoins in all accounts combined. Next after that is making a web wallet.

Like some others have said, I wouldn't touch Bitcoin core, don't know C anyways, also wouldn't want to mess anything up with the core client. Rather just built apps that connect to the blockchain.

I like Tuts+ and Codeschool, I'm currently learning the MEAN stack, and there are various videos and tutorials all over the web.

Like others have said, if you don't want to link a bank account then go with local bitcoins, or find your local Bitcoin Meetup group and buy from them there Smiley

I don't mind so I use coinbase.com and circle.com to buy my bitcoins, I may buy some more from local people too.

Also going to get into mining early this year, looking forward to making bitcoins that way Smiley

Well, in 2012 if u invested $100 in bitcoin, it would have become $300 by now. 3 fold increase in investment within 3 years is good Wink

Hehe yeah not bad, but too bad I spent it on something else Sad

Hi welcome to the forum, like the rest of us i bet you wish you bought straight away, you'd be rich!

I have a friend who bought some when they where $2 lol! He used it to pay for something back then too... he still buys today though at current prices.

And yeah I wish I had learned about Bitcoin sooner... oh well, it's the future of finance, looking forward to the day that it truly encompasses the entire globe, like the internet of today Wink

Hi and welcome to the forum!

...

Anyways, so I just ordered and Antminer S5 and Cosair RM850 to get into mining this year(been only buying off coinbase and circle, but convinced now that mining is a good investment and just cool). Also me and a friend are working on a Bitcoin app, to monitor balances and eventually be a wallet.
...

I don't think it's a good investment, you'll struggle to hit ROI (especially with the current price drop), unless you have a free electricity or something.

But good luck anyway.

Thanks for the tip, I'm not selling any BTC though, I'd rather us USD to pay for my bills and BTC is my savings plan.

Finally signed up on a Bitcoin forum Smiley

I first heard about Bitcoin back in 2012, when I was looking for some providgal, and found some modafinil on an Indian website (mental focus pills) Anyways they only took a bank wire transfer where I had to give them my bank account info, or use Bitcoins.

Thought bitcoin was just some kind of digital token back then. They where about $100 per Bitcoin or maybe less then, so I got some btc and ordered the medication. Later about 8-12 months I went back to buy some more and Bitcoins where now worth $200...

Learned more about Bitcoin in 2013 and decided to join the Dallas Bitcoin meetup, which blew my mind... didn't realize there was so much to Bitcoin. Next couple of months was nothing but Bitcoin research, podcasts, news, reading the white paper (I'm a dev and got super excited about the technology Smiley)
