1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: 🐕 [ANN] Wownero - Such privacy! Many coins! Wow! 🐕 on: March 24, 2018, 01:47:00 AM

can you firstly explain what is meant by 'ring size'?

In cryptonote coins, each transaction can (or must, depending on settings) have basically multiple signatures / transactions. Your own transaction, and a certain number of other "fake", automatically generated transactions. The ring size is how many total.

So a "ring" of 1 is just a normal transaction. A ring of 3 means you have your own transaction and two others to disguise yours.

That's not really quite right, as I've never fully understood how this all works, but I think it's the basic concept. :-)

---

Best of luck to you with this jw. Looks cool.

I've never done mining before, but I might try it out when this launches.

This ....

"Bitcoin can already scale much larger than (Visa) with existing hardware for a fraction of the cost.  It never really hits a scale ceiling." ~ Satoshi

Yeah, that is interesting. My guess would be that he's saying a single node could operate at that scale for less than the total operations of Visa. That could be true.

As for the "scale ceiling", I think he's arguing that there isn't a quadratic (or higher) growth in cost. Which I think is also probably true in general. I haven't seen a convincing argument against it at least. I'm aware of the quadratic cost in signatures, but that's as the size of a transaction grows rather than as the number of transactions go.

Really a very different perspective than certain key developers today who emphatically claim that 8MB is scary and dangerous.
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitmain announces plan to create altcoin if BIP148 succeeds on: June 24, 2017, 05:27:17 AM
I read through, or at least skimmed by the end, the whole thread, and for the most part don't feel the need to engage in any of this. But I do want to comment on this from page 10 which no one else seemed to pick up on:

One of your leaders , Adam Back, thinks users would be ok paying $100 / fee.
Outright lie.

So far as I see, this tweet says basically exactly that: https://twitter.com/adam3us/status/872422714237177856

Before I'm attacked for being an altcoiner and not posting on this forum much, let me just point out that I really don't care what Back's opinion is and am making no argument on either side in this thread; I'm just linking to his tweet on that topic since the factual question of what he said or didn't was raised.

And with that, I'll see myself out.

As BTC has boomed and alts have been rising generally, NYAN has been rising as well, although I think a bit slower overall.

As always, please remember not to put anything in you can't afford to lose, and read our risks document before gambling: https://www.reddit.com/r/nyancoins/comments/56enxw/overview_of_major_risks_of_buying_nyancoins/

I started a series on "what are we selling?" which talks about where our value lies. In my opinion, the community, centered around /r/nyancoins, is what makes NYAN important and what we should "sell". To be clear however, while I'm interested in attracting likeminded people, at no point do we want to be telling anyone to put their money in. If people want to buy coins, great, but to the extent we market, I believe it should be limited to targeted pitches to people we think would be valuable additions to the community and not be about gaining buyers. With that said, the link to my post about what I think makes our community different and valuable: https://www.reddit.com/r/nyancoins/comments/6g3dbx/community_philosophy_what_are_we_selling_part_1/

Cheers!

Apologies for not checking in more frequently here. I continue to be working seven days a week generally, and lately, my internet connection at home has crapped out.

Not much new technically speaking. We should be hammering out the specifications for NYAN3 (hard-forking release tentatively scheduled for sometime 2017). Initially proposed is a block size increase (to prove we can, not because we need it now. Also suggested is a difficulty function change (the current one takes too long to increase, then increases too much; we want a faster, smoother response). And the third part is putting in an OP_DATA type of functionality which will allow us to ultimately build a forum system on the Nyanchain and other applications as well.

In community, as mentioned above, we have a NYAN Parlement formed. I haven't been as active there yet as I will be, but I hope to make this a useful body.

In finance, we surprisingly had a large spike recently. It looks like someone just suddenly threw a bunch of money (a few BTC) at NYAN. Personally, I always advocate slower, more long-term buying, after perhaps learning a little bit of a lesson early on in the revival (first quarter of 2015) when americanpegasus and I bid each other up unsustainably (and haven't yet regained the 60+ satoshi we were hitting by the end of that, apart from briefly during this spike). This spike went up to a bit over 400 satoshi apparently, but now we're back to 10 satoshi, which is still up from the 7-9 satoshi I'd been trading at, but a tiny bump compared to the money thrown at it.

Still, regardless of how it comes, this helps us. I had a 100,000 NYAN ask at 300 satoshi, and that got filled. That's going to go back into buying NYAN at market prices (now apparently 10-12 satoshi rather than 7-9 satoshi). My hope is that we'll see more and more Nekonauts acting as market makers like this in the future, and investing into more and more NYAN.

I'd really like to know who was behind this and I hope they will continue to gamble on NYAN. But even if this was a one-time event, it has definitely helped give some more energy to us and take some cheap (and some not-as-cheap) NYAN off the market. And that's very much appreciated.

Cheers!

Send like some discussion in the Russian thread about how nyan was "officially licensed", which is a good point. Maybe if no one knows we should just strip that bold red text out of the OP.

The original development team made an agreement with the guy who originally made the nyan cat. Pretty straightforward.

The bad part is that he lost money on it back in the day apparently, from putting money in to have nyancoin merch made and not making the money back.

I'm perfectly fine with stripping it. Someday when we get his endorsement for the revival we can make a bigger deal about it. But the "officially licensed" thing is not a big selling point in my opinion and I don't think it's the thing to emphasize.

@CoinaDay I visited /r/nyancoins and it's a pretty nice place! PM me so we can discuss further translations if you need some.

I don't check here often enough. If you like what you've seen on /r/nyancoins, please PM me on Reddit with a brief summary of what you think my key points are and we'll go from there. :-)

Also replied in that thread. I'd like to be able to answer the questions there...

hatshepsut93, would you be able to translate the questions here for me (as a reply in this thread for transparency) so I can reply and then translate them back?

Apologies for English in the Russian forum, but I think I'm seeing some questions here and I'd like them to be answered.

I'd like to have you as a Nekonaut, meaning your interest in supporting the coin for its own sake and for the sake of improving the value of your coins is enough to do useful things for it without needing to negotiate a price each time, but let me know what you think would be reasonable as an initial retainer / honorarium for some additional translation like this. :-)

Thanks for stopping by CoinaDay. What's the history with prguitarman?

Basically he got burned by putting money into supporting the original release with merch, and then there was the whole crash, and so seemed pretty reluctant to get back in. I just got a short response back when I contacted him towards the start of the revival. I think it's been more than a year since I contacted him. I should do so again at some point and want to offer him both NYAN and USD, but sort of want to wait until I have more USD I can offer. Basically want to be giving him tribute in recognition of creating the original and the work he did to support it originally. Also...I wonder if he still has any of that original merch? I know he sells nyancat stuff, but I think this was nyancoin. Quite possible he got rid of it.

My hope is definitely that we get him back on board someday, but I want to take it slowly to show we're not another fly-by-night and above all, make sure he can't lose any money on it this time around (that is, it's going to be about giving him gifts and asking nothing in return apart from, at most, hopefully an endorsement someday and perhaps in the best possible outcome, if he got involved in the community...that would be amazing).

hatshepsut93, offering 100k NYAN at the moment if you're interested.

Cool, that seems reasonable. I won't guarantee anything, but Coin_trader, if you're interested, go to the subreddit and read some of the posts. Unfortunately, it's quite messy, but I hope you can get some flavor of it. If you're interested in translating some of the posts, I might consider sponsoring that if you're interested. But they can be somewhat long and complex and I wouldn't want to be going more than perhaps 50-100k per post, and only for some of the more central posts. If you're interested, contact me on Reddit to make arrangements (I'm not online a whole lot, especially right now, so might take a bit to finalize an arrangement).

hatshepsut93, if you end up doing the ANN with poptartcat, same offer to you: read the subreddit, see if you like it, if so, we can talk on Reddit further about possibly translating some of the posts from there.

I'm going to go make a post on Reddit now with more detail, but I got a second job, so I'm going to be working seven days a week for a bit. Probably won't be online much for the next month or so. After that, I'll be switching to the new job and should be able to get online more often again.

To Higher Heights!
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][NYAN] NyanCoin - ★★★V1.3 Released!★★★ on: October 10, 2016, 12:33:55 AM
there is ICO for NYAN ?

No, they want you to know NYAN is quite alive and kicking after all this years.

Right, but also that there's an updated client. We deliberately didn't make a new thread until we had a new release.

What is so special about a coin based off a gif with the gif creators permission? Not like Dogecoin had an issue.

Nothing particularly. I do rather like the skin.

But when I started with NYAN, well, at first I was just writing a series called "coin-a-day" (thus the username), and it was going to be my example of a "deadcoin", based on mockery of americanpegasus I'd seen for his crazy enthusiastic post about it back in the day, and the subreddit seeming dead.

Once I saw that the chain was still running and Cryptsy (since obviously gone) was still trading it, I decided to buy a bit of it. And pretty quickly I got hooked on it and decided to make it a living experiment on what it would take to revive the coin from near-death to a powerhouse. It's my first example of the art I'm creating of "coin rehabbing". I figured rather than create a new coin, why not take a coin which had a brief heyday and work to build it up again?

For those purposes, I actually consider it an advantage that it doesn't have any particular advantage and is what I call a "clonecoin": basically just a skin on another coin. The tech is plug-and-play and as easy as possible. This makes us relatively easy to support for pools and exchanges and easy to understand for newcomers. At the same time, it makes any success a demonstration that what matters is the community rather than the technology. While technology is obviously important for a cryptocurrency, I think there's an over-emphasis on chasing after shiny tech and an under-emphasis on the people involved.

With that said, I do think prguitarman's endorsement is important, but on that subject, it should be clearly noted that we don't have his support (yet, hopefully) for the revival. He got burned in the original crash in 2014 and is understandably reluctant to get reinvolved. But I think it's important for us to respect him and when we get more financial strength and whenever he's interested, I'm certainly planning on endowing him with significant NYAN.

As far as DOGE, I absolutely love their community and am hoping to build a stronger and formal alliance with them ultimately. They are an inspiration for what I hope to build with our community, albeit with a stronger technical emphasis. I would like to see DOGE become the leading cryptocurrency.

Bumba! I remember you from Cryptopia! You were around when I was active on their trollbox campaigning for us to get listed. It's great to see you still active. I've admired your spirit and friendliness. I'm hoping you will be interested in the cryptocurrency alliance idea I'm working on. Right now we're forming a NYAN Parlement in large part so we will have a formal endorsement for that concept, but the basic concept will be sort of an industry working group which will produce ethical standards as well as promote mutual cooperation as well as just embracing the fun of cryptocurrency with like-minded communities.

And thank you for the Mac build; that's awesome! I'll link on the subreddit for greater visibility. Do you use Reddit at all? If so, please stop by and say hi! If not, post or PM me a NYAN address. ;-)

Thanks for the note on the windows builds; typo I'm sure.

Cheers y'all! It's fun to see the increased activity here!

And I still say the title and label of the release should be 2.0. ;-p Security update and first release in more than a year! This is a big deal! I know the code itself is still saying 1.3 at this point, but for "marketing" purposes really should consider it a major release and I think that should be in the builds ultimately too.
13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][NYAN] NyanCoin - ★★★V1.3 Released!★★★ on: October 08, 2016, 12:29:06 AM
we are talking about dead cat coin, sir we are in 2016, are you time travel from 2013 ? cmon!
At least be creative!  Cheesy

Oh golly gee, low effort trolling on shitcointalk, what a shock!

Dead? We have an active community, a new release with security fixes which isn't just some shitty takeover hard fork, and I've been working on the revival for more than a year and half before we bothered to make a new thread here, because we aren't some fucking pump-and-dump. The chain runs. The code works. The only thing dead is apparently your brain.

At least put some effort into the trolling!

For instance, you could mock the fact that it's led by a homeless dishwasher (myself). That's comedy gold right there! Or you could mock the fact that the price is less than one-hundredth of where it was before the crash in 2014.

2013? The coin was release in Jan 2014, genius. You would prefer some new, unproven vaporware hypecoin I suppose? Go for it. By no means am I trying to sell this to anyone. I've been very deliberately working within the subreddit with the people who are interested in trying to rebuild something as an example to the rest of the cryptocurrency community, and there is plenty of work yet to be done. We're certainly still a nanocap, irrelevant little coin (market cap under $20k), but dead we are not.

---

As far as a bounty for translation, I'm not interested in sponsoring one personally. The work on NYAN has been done by Nekonauts who want to support the coin. I want it to continue that way. I find that there are a lot of people out there, like the infamous Greek one, who spam the hell out of translation services in particular and don't contribute much of any significance to the coin. No offense intended. But I don't intend to attract that type.

With that said, I can and have given away many nillions (millions of NYAN) to Nekonauts who do useful things for the coin. But I consider technical contributions orders of magnitude more valuable than marketing, which is basically what translation is a subset of.

---

As a general note, anyone interested in this coin should make sure to read the risks document, https://www.reddit.com/r/nyancoins/comments/36e7ed/overview_of_major_risks_of_buying_nyancoins/, before gambling any significant amount of funds. I'm planning on doing an updated version of this in the next couple of hours, actually, presuming I don't get too lazy, and will post the updated link at the time so that people can actually comment on it. I consider responsible disclosure of risks to be extremely important. The work I've done on the revival of NYAN has been a reaction to the shit I've seen throughout the general cryptocurrency "community" such as it is. I am in this for the years and decades to come and I intend to prove what hard work and honesty can accomplish along with a badass team of cool cats.

Those who are interested are welcome to join us. Those who don't like it are welcome to take a flying leap.

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!

Edit: Also, I still think this release should be called "NYAN 2.0" because it's the first release in more than a year and it has critical security updates (notably the fix to the fork bug vulnerability, which was hit in Peercoin). I think a major version increment is more than justified by either of those conditions, but especially with the conjunction of both.

Edit 2: I should clearly note here: I currently own just over 100 nillion, out of 337 nillion max supply, and so hold about 35% of the current supply (~289 nillion). I am of course biased as hell in favor of NYAN. It is the main coin I support (I also consider myself a shibe as well and want to build an even stronger relationship with DOGE than we already have (I've done a major giveaway there and /u/rnicoll has commented in /r/nyancoins from time to time)). Also, I like DOBB; BOB loves you!

Edit 3: Updated risks document: https://www.reddit.com/r/nyancoins/comments/56enxw/overview_of_major_risks_of_buying_nyancoins/. I removed the fork bug and no core developer risk based on this new release and added the 51% attack vulnerability which should have been noted before. Any feedback on this document greatly appreciated.

Edit 4: I am an idiot and can't figure out the url formatting here which I'm sure is painfully obvious and simple. Can't be arsed to figure it out right now.
14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][NYAN] NyanCoin - ★★★V1.2 Released! Now Listed on Cryptsy! ★★★ on: May 20, 2016, 05:38:46 PM
Probably should remove the "now listed on cryptsy" from the topic title  Grin

Peg! Good to see you around these parts!

As jwinterm guessed, none of the current players have access to modify the top of this thread. At the same time, I have felt constrained by the expectation that a new ANN should only be created for new releases, and I didn't want a vaporware or hype thread. So I had been planning to create a new thread once I finally got NYAN2 built.

But as jwinterm also stated: there's actually a new build now!! This is entirely due to /u/vmp32k and /u/stellarseahorses on Reddit. I actually came to this thread to make a post mentioning it. I'm glad that jwinterm got the link here already; thanks!

It's being considered a public beta for now, and I've been too busy / lazy to test it out or do code review myself yet. But I absolutely will get to that, and I believe that within the month we should be ready to consider it an official release: the first new release of the revival. This is the biggest thing to have happened for Nyancoin during this revival, and I'm incredibly proud to have Nekonauts like this active in the community.

I plan on making a new ANN once we declare the release officially ready unless /u/vmp32k is interested in maintaining the thread. I'm also going to suggest rebranding to NYAN2 rather than the current NYAN 1.3.0 designation being used, because I think the critical vulnerability fix (same forking vulnerability Peercoin hit months ago; we've been aware but hadn't gotten an updated client to address it yet) merits it, as well as reflection of the change from the original development team.

I need to study the solution in detail, but I think this will not changing the mining behavior (presumed to be on Linux 64-bit) but instead will just correct the client (meaning Windows or Linux 32-bit nodes) vulnerability to having a different interpretation of the validity of the particular edge case transaction than the miners. This means that it will be a required update for "clients" as defined but that we should be able to expect it to be recommended but less critical for pools and the exchange.

I'm staying pretty busy with work, and that's hopefully going to be continuing, but I'm going to be trying to help get to the point where we're confident enough to call this the official release and be able to finally be on a modern client and not have a known critical vulnerability (the difficulty function is annoying and not as good as I would like for dealing with hit-and-run, but that's going to take a hard fork and is not critical; we'll address that along with expanding the block size hard cap just to show we can in NYAN3, tentatively scheduled for release in early 2017 and activation sometime in 2017).

Any update about the new wallet?

Hey, sorry, I'm basically never on here. I strongly recommend anyone interested in Nyancoin to follow https://www.reddit.com/r/nyancoins rather than this thread.

But, no, unfortunately, I've made no new progress on the wallet. I've been wanting to get a new laptop for a build computer to be able to do the gitian build, and my life afk and personal finances have been far too screwed up to do that yet, sorry.

At this point, I have no idea when I might have it out, but I'll be happy if I can do it by the end of the summer. I think I'm finally on a decent path afk, but we'll see where the next couple of months take me.

Overall, I've done rather poorly on the revival: I bid up way too high in the beginning, and it's crashed down to basically the same price it had started at, as I've been unable to keep putting as much in as I did at the start (originally was working on a software job, had lots of extra money; haven't been able to put anything in at all in the last few months or so). Obviously this new client release has taken far longer than I wanted. I was hoping to be onto mobile clients by this point and planning for NYAN3. And the community is quite tiny.

However, we have gotten a few good people over in /r/nyancoins, and they've made meaningful contributions (KojoSlayer runs dice and faucet; jwflame runs a great intro site; vmp32k runs explorer), and we've had a few cryptocurrency developers reading it from time to time. That's been good, and I hope we'll keep that base going forward. I'm still in this for the long haul.

I'm very sorry I haven't made more progress or been better about updating here. But we're still alive and flying.

Hi,

I'm just curious, what's the coin supply? Coinmarketcap says like a million, the block explorer (http://explorer.dcredits.com/) says

Money Supply
200385184.22698229

but it seems like from the first post here it should be like 2 million per year with 1% PoS, so there's no way it should be 200 million supply currently, right?

What's the correct value?

That is the kludgiest, most hilarious fix ever. "Ooops, in this block we reached max supply; let's just stop now" Yeeeah, that's going to work.  Grin I bought about 0.1 42 around 4.2 BTC and just finally got (almost) fully out recently around 2 BTC or less. It's showing a current supply of 52 on http://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/42-coin/ and http://42.blockexp.info/ ; now, I'm no expert, but my understanding was that 42coin was supposed to have, well, 42 coins max...so...what the fuck happened? 20  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Warning Cryptopia !!! No payout on: November 16, 2015, 09:00:41 PM
Just some miscellaneous comments after having read through the whole thread:

@turtle: no, they are not anonymous. Both Hex and Saddam are easily identifiable because they are the major shareholders of Cryptopia which is a publicly registered New Zealand corporation.

@OBAViJEST: actually, I have to disagree with you: I do recall Hex and Saddam talking about coding DOT while on acid. Personally, I find that impressive, and a reason to invest, but there have been discussions of drugs other than weed.

As far as funding, running an exchange is not that expensive. Hex and saddam are largely self-funded. The fact that there aren't massive amounts of paid staff is not a problem (in my never humble opinion of course).

As far as dead coins, disabling them would make it harder to launch a revival. Caveat emptor in my opinion. If someone is planning to start moving a chain again, they might want a deposit address to test or a withdraw queued up.

And it's strange to me that the suggestion is merely to "disable" deposits (not display deposit address) and withdraws (when, again, there could be legitimate reasons for wanting it queued) and no call for banning the trading. Cryptopia does make an effort to select decent coins to list, and avoids delisting them, so, yeah, if a coin dies after it gets listed, it'll probably stick around for a while. I don't think that's a bad thing.

It's hilarious to me this all started from Prototanium. I thought that was a strange idea when I saw it being pumped. If people want UNO, why not buy UNO? Why buy testnet? It's worse than a clonecoin. But whatever, it was popular for a moment and people chose to buy it. And then they complain when it breaks rather than fixing it.

It is not the exchange's responsibility to fix or support the coins.

And, yes, if you piss off Hex and Saddam you're going to have a bad time. Just like if you piss off the-Powers-that-Be at any site you're going to have a bad time. They're just more open and honest about it. I rather like it. I'm sure Cryptopia isn't for everyone, but again, I'm glad to have found a home there.
