I guess it correlates quite a bit. You need to be either interested in currencies or cryptography to use a cryptocurrency that's not widely adopted yet (compared to traditional currencies and the farce that is online banks like Paypal).

bitcoind is the daemon. You won't see much of a GUI there. Did you check the wiki on how to properly install and configure bitcoin?
