kislam: Thanks for the feedback. I've updated the ReadMe to try to make this clearer. I see what you mean about the confusion with the open directory button. Originally all profile information was only available in the Mining Profiles window, but I then went back and wanted to at least display it on the Settings tab. But I made them read-only to try to direct users to manage profile settings all in one place. I provided the buttons to make it quicker to do things like edit the profile's config file or bat/cmd file, not the profile itself. To do that, you have to use the 'Manage Profiles...' button which takes you to the Mining Profiles window.

Whichever profile you set to active in the Settings tab is the one that will be used. The only time it won't be used immediately is if the miner is running from the previous profile and you have chosen not to restart it when CGWatcher asked you. So the only time you have to worry about the current mining profile is if you switched profiles while the miner was running and didn't restart the miner. Otherwise, the current mining profile and the active profile will always be the same. The active profile is the one you select and is saved when you click 'Save Settings'. This profile is used when CGWatcher starts, or when it starts or restarts the miner.

The Default profile is just a name given to the first profile it creates automatically for users that do not have any profiles yet. You can change the name of it. You can then name another profile Default if you wanted to. I just had to name it something.

Thanks for the explanation. I just have a very simple suggestion -- you have a button on the 'Pools' tab that says 'Switch to this Pool'. Similarly, you can add a button on the 'Settings' tab that says 'Switch to this Profile' which will switch to the selected profile and will automatically restart the miner if necessary (i.e. when switching from sha to scrypt). I think this will make profiles section a lot more intuitive. Also, it might be better to have a separate tab for 'Profile' section.

1.1.4 is available. It should fix most bugs, and if it doesn't it will at least introduce some new ones to keep the old ones from feeling lonely. If you find it doesn't fix your problem or creates a new one, please let me know.

Thanks.

Great software (hope you got the small LTC donation I sent earlier)...

But new version 1.1.4.0 has some bugs. Gave me some crashes in the beginning -- specific case was when i tried to use the previous saved settings file with the new version - crashed immediately with I/O error. In the settings tab, there should be a button beside the Miner path text box that lets users choose the miner executable first (like there is a button marked "..." in the Manage Profiles dialog box). the button that is there (open folder icon) is confusing, as people will want to click it hoping to choose the miner, but its function is to open explorer showing the miner's directory that is specified. also, clicking the 'open directory' icon for the config file if the path is empty crashes CGWatcher.

The new profile section is confusing. How do you quickly switch profiles? Which profile is the default profile? I mean if the computer is restarted, which profile will be loaded -- the last saved one or the last active one? there needs to be a way to set the profile that will be started by default in case of a computer restart (maybe due to power failure). there should also be a button to switch profile -- only way i could find was to stop the miner, choose another profile and then start the miner again -- this should be one-click job.

I cannot stress enough -- this is a really great effort and a great time saver, at least for me, since one of my cards is a bit shaky and dies once in a while. CGWatcher can flawlessly restart mining every time. KUDOS!

No, my miner is still running and accepting shares.  I am concerned about the website being down though, I should be crossing my payout threshold any minute now....   Tongue

web site is working, but i crossed my payout limit few hours ago, not getting any payout yet...

(you may need to put a comma at the end of the second line depending on where in the config file you place it.)

For clarification: if it is the last line of the config file, then don't put a comma at the end, otherwise do put a comma at the end.
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [100 GH] (2% DGM) - COINOTRON pool - Stratum, ASIC tested on: May 08, 2013, 05:31:40 AM
Mining LTC on Coinotron has a higher rejection (stale) rate than other pools. It is 5+%. It is because the miner-difficulty is too high.

So far the pool finds a block every 11.8 minutes. My miner generate a share every 1.7 min. When the pool finds a block and "close the door for the round", I have have a probability of 1.7min /2  / 11.8min = 5.5% not being able to register the work I have done with the pool. I measured the actual stale rate in 12 hours and it is 5.2%, in good agreement iwth my estimate.

So how can I set the difficulty for me lower? It is 198 now (my miner is 160kH/s). I would like to get the difficulty 60 or lower.

Same thing happens to me but much worse! I am trying to mine TRC but can hardly submit a share when difficulty is low. With frequent new blocks, my reject/stale/discard rate is sky high. Please either lower the difficulty or provide an option to choose our own difficulty. Much appreciated.

Hi,

Really nice program. Works great! Sent a small doantion (LTC)  Grin

Would like to request a new feature -- Mining Profiles. I use multiple config files to start cgminer mining with different options (i.e. one config for starting with scrypt mining, another for sha256 mining). So if you could add the option to save mining profiles that restart cgminer to use different config files (obviously cgminer will have to be killed and restarted with new config file if we want to switch from sha256 to scrypt mining), then that would be great.

Also, please add an option to automatically switch abovementioned mining profile based on the most profitable mining option. For example, right now LTC mining is about 50% more profitable than BTC mining, but that might not be the case in the future, and the higher profitability may switch back and forth, (like TRC). So if we can have an option to (restart cgminer and) switch automatically to the most profitable profile upon regular checking, that would be great. There needs to be an option to wait minimum xx seconds before switching profile so that the miner does not switch too frequently.

thanks again for the great effort

Edit: Here's another strong case for Mining Profiles. I have been using cgwatcher while BTC mining. It has worked REALLY well, restarting my sick card flawlessly (which cgminer didn't/couldn't). But... today i switched to LTC mining while cgwatcher was running and monitoring as usual... well and good. But I was surprised to see the miner being restarted after a while without any reason or apparent problem. When I looked at the log I saw that it was restarted due to low hash rate, which I had set to 10% of my usual BTC hash rate. Well... duh! LTC hash rate is 1000-th of BTC hash rate. So if there was an option to set up different profiles, where I could set different target hash rates to montior, then this problem would disappear. So please consider this seriously along with the request for switching to most profitable chain...

Edit 2: another suggestion: checking the card's temperature is, in my opinion, the fastest way to realize that the card has stopped mining. Rapid temperature drop will notify the card crash much faster than both 'total hash rate checking' and 'total shares stop increasing'. There should be an option to restart the miner based on target lowest temperature since cgminer does a pretty decent job of maintaining a target temperature when auto-fan and auto-gpu options are set.
10  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: cgminer multi-pool change management strategies on: April 29, 2013, 11:55:32 AM
Hi,

Once you find a pool you like, there is no need to switch to other pools unless your preferred pool is down. Different multipool strategies do not usually give better overall hashrates, in my experience. Over the long run it averages out. Ideally, you should have at least 2 or more backup pools and set them as failover options in case the preferred pool goes down. CGMINER will automatically switch back to your preferred/higher priority pool when it comes back up if you keep the default settings (multipool strategy: failover).

CGMINER will send shares to preferred pool as well as backup pools if it finds that the preferred pool is lagging. If you do not want this, then set --failover-only option, which means shares will be submitted to backup pools ONLY if preferred/higher priority pool is down.

As an alternative, you can try the Load Balance strategy for a day or two to see if that gives you better results. What this does is try to get the best of all your pools so that no work is wasted. Fast pools get most of the work, while other pools take up the slack if preferred pool is lagging. But honestly speaking these days the major pools are quite robust, and won't give you much problems unless they are being DDOSed.

Best thing is to just try the different strategies one by one and see for yourself. Be sure to test all strategies before difficulty changes otherwise total earnings will not be consistent.

OP, did you read this? https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Comparison_of_mining_pools

It is a comparison of different pools and what reward mechanisms they use and what fees they charge etc. It is best to check out a few and do your own research before settling on one that you are comfortable with. There are different options, so you can choose the one that suits your mining pattern. For me, I found that PPS works best when I am mining intermittently (DGM/PPLNS proponents, please ignore, this is my personal preference only).

Hopping does work. Hoppers earn 20 to 30 % extra (maybe less now that there aren't that many reliable proportionate pools) as compared with non-hoppers. This extra has to come from somewhere and the general consensus is that it comes out of the pocket of 'honest' miners. Whether or not you have a problem with this is for you to decide.

If you lost your 8 hours mining at slush (as someone pointed out), then it's just bad luck and a lack of understanding their reward system. They mention on their home page that they follow a "Score based reward system", and provide a link to a detailed explanation. Even the short description provided in the mining pool comparison link given above says "Score based system: a proportional reward, but weighed by time submitted. Each submitted share is worth more in the function of time t since start of current round. For each share score is updated by: score += exp(t/C). This makes later shares worth much more than earlier shares, thus the miner's score quickly diminishes when they stop mining on the pool. Rewards are calculated proportionally to scores (and not to shares)."

So the best thing to do now is to choose the pool that suits you best (there are other PPS pools with less fee than 50BTC, so you can try them also) and move on  Wink
14  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: is it save to upgrade from Ubuntu 11.04 Natty -> Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS? on: November 03, 2012, 01:31:45 PM
In my case, upgrading to 11.10 (which you have to do before you can go to 12.04) totally screwed the system. It did not detect the card properly and gave me a blank screen on startup. I did a fresh install of 12.04 and now everything is working fine. I actually re-installed my 11.04 first and configured everything. Then I did a fresh install of 12.04 on a separate partition in a multi-boot config. Then only after 12.04 was fully up and running I made it the default boot option and it is happily chugging along. In case I come across any problem with 12.04 I can simply switch back to my 11.04 partition which works just fine...

If you do want to (or have to) go the fresh install way, follow this nice step-by-step guide which will make it a breeze to set up your new system as you can just copy and paste in your terminal one command after another, relax as the system configures itself. The guide is for xubuntu, but works fine with ubuntu 12.04  ---   https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=82685.0

(BTW, all of the above are 64-bit versions)
15  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Guiminer .5 BTC Bounty for solution! :) on: November 03, 2012, 01:11:12 PM
Are you convinced about switching yet?

Seriously, the number of cards you are using suggests you are no casual miner! So please invest some time to try out bfgminer, cgminer or even diablo, phoenix or poclbm. These are all tried and tested miners and will save you a lot of headache down the line once you have found your sweet spot with one of them. cgminer and bfgminer both support configuration files (see the example.conf in the same directory as the miner and edit it, rename it cgminer.conf or bfgminer.conf), which makes it very easy to make changes as you need. you can also make changes on the fly (like adding or disabling pools, changing fan speed or the intensity of the GPU etc.) and then write these changes back to the config file while your miner is running.

Believe me, i have been mining for more than a year and i tried all of them and right now using bfgminer on both linux and windows. once you get it going (which is really not that hard to do), you never look back.

Here's my current balance:

                            Unpaid Balance   Extra Credit
As of last block*:   0.34253887 BTC   0.33829912 BTC

Unpaid + EC totals higher than 0.67, I am not currently mining here and not planning to start until the new system is fully in place and rewards are being sent out smoothly. I believe there are others in similar situation and with the same question in mind:

When can I expect to get paid, and more importantly, how much?

I think the Eligius server is offline. I cannot connect to it.

same here, i am also finding my miners working with backup pools.

i started mining here again just to bump my balance above 0.67...

@Gatorhex, it wasn't my intention to scam or badmouth this pool, i had mined here for a long time. any evidence required by the operator will be provided, as necessary, but privately Smiley. also, why would you assume that i was using my signature address as the mining address? isn't it more convenient to use a separate address for each pool (for the very simple reason that you can determine where a payment is coming from at a glance)?
