Seeing as you obviously don't know the difference between Java and javascript you shouldn't give any advice on this matter whatsoever, not even to buy a book, because if he follows your advice he will buy the wrong book...

I've bookmarked several guides I've found through google and pirated 3 books. They were either out-of-date or unclear. I'm here to find a recommended alternative. I want somebody to tell me what they genuinely think is the best.

Perhaps you could ask it on a dedicated forum or wait until someone with enough knowlegde comes here.

I'd say read the books/guides/tutorials, then try to program a bit and try to acomplish your goal step by step.
