1  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Anyone else having delays withdrawing BTC from bitstamp? on: May 23, 2013, 08:57:46 PM
48 hours later, and still no BTC. Support is giving me the run around. This is ridiculous.

Update: I just got a refund and then was able to withdraw the funds. This time I received the transaction almost instantly. Hopefully this was just a temporary glitch on their part.

I bugged them again, and I got basically the same reply, that a "system administrator" had been notified. No estimated time to resolve. In my mind, there is no acceptable reason to have a delay of this length to withdraw a small amount of BTC. This was my first time using their company after trading some XRP for BTC, and I would be very hesitant to use their service again after this experience.
4  Economy / Service Discussion / Anyone else having delays withdrawing BTC from bitstamp? on: May 22, 2013, 02:03:34 PM
I initiated a withdrawal of a small amount of bitcoin (<1 BTC) from bitstamp yesterday. The transaction shows completed in their system, yet no activity has hit the blockchain. I filed a support ticket, and almost immediately got a reply that a "System Administrator" had been notified, but nearly 24 hours later, no further reply from support, and no BTC in my wallet. What is going on?

Hey, I was just too lazy to enter the "forum" part in the bitcoin forums address and went -> bitcoin.org, clicked on forums there. Seems like someone replaced the link to the forums with a link to a google search for bitcoin forums. I suggest someone with write permissions on the main page should change this back.

thank you and have a nice evening

I just noticed this as well.. its very strange.

Legally you would probably need a Money Transmitter license in all 50 states. It would cost you several million dollars in fees to legally set up.
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TradeHill Spam on: June 20, 2011, 01:28:26 AM
Tighten your belts, a new wave of TH-related spam is on the way!
Just got another email... will I get emails from all TH users? Scary just think about it!  Huh

People, my data plan doesn't support for all this spam! Please! I rather switch off my MtGox email from my BB.  Angry

Yep, I just got the following spam from 'bittrader566@yahoo.com':

9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It's Official Mt.Gox Database Leaked :( on: June 20, 2011, 01:10:39 AM
It would still be a fishing expedition. I have had a MtGox account for months but I never used their platform for a single trade.

I think the point should be made that Mt.Gox was not upfront in saying the username database had been stolen. The single account that was hacked or used is one thing but the release of 61k accounts with or without the password hash being crackable shows a real security concern with the site.

Second this is a goldmine for the IRS as the value of Bitcoins has increased and those who have been trading or hording from the first days and have made a profit must realize income is income to the IRS (US, you insert your own country) and sooner or later it will draw their attention. Now instead of them having to subpoena a server owner in some foreign country they can just subpoena Google for all those GMail accounts listed. Once they start that fishing they won't stop which makes me curious about the username order in the leaked file. If I was in the first 200 and one was to assume the order is oldest to newest and one must also assume the oldest have gained the most, well I might be double checking my tracks for emails related to profit, sales, etc.

For those with business email addresses listed I also would not assume your bosses won't get this list and if your using company resources for mining or anything else I would cover those tracts pretty fast too.

Dear Sir or Madam,

A few hours ago the Bitcoin trading website Mt Gox has been hacked. Malicious individuals have been able to obtain a database containing usernames, email address and encrypted passwords. This information has been posted publicly on the internet.

As a Bitcoin supporter I'm now sending a message to every email address contained in the hacked database. This is to warn you that your username, email address and password have been leaked. I therefore strongly advice you to change your passwords. If you have used the same password on different websites it's highly recommended to change your password on all of your accounts!

For a more secure alternative to Mt Gox, the community appears to be moving to TradeHill. So this is no reason to lose faith in Bitcoin itself. It must be seen as a warning that not every website can be trusted with your data however! Their link is http://www.tradehill.com/?r=TH-R15683 (Note: You can remove the Referral Code when registering if you want!) This is certainly not the only website where you can exchange Bitcoins, also check out http://www.thebitcoinlist.com/dp_bitcoin/bitcoin-exchange/

Sincerely,

A Bitcoin supporter

11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gmail unusual activity on: June 19, 2011, 10:17:26 PM
My respect for Google has only increased due to this quick response. Thank you!

Hi guys,

The reason your Google accounts have been required to change the password is that you appeared in a list of public MtGox accounts. We do understand that you may not have been sharing your passwords, unfortunately as they were leaked in hashed form it is hard to know which ones will be found to be sharing passwords and which won't - this will be found out by brute forcers over the next 24-48 hours.

Again, apologies for the inconvenience, we know that choosing new passwords is a pain. Requiring password rotations is not a decision we take lightly. However this is standard procedure for credentials leaks. It is to avoid accounts showing up in the black market for hacked passwords, as Gmail account access can be used to obtain access at other sites (PayPal, Facebook, etc).

thanks,

Mike

I just had this happen to my account too..  frozen out of Gmail when trying to login. I had to verify my identity via a SMS.

Hopefully bitcoin will only become stronger due to this incident. (people will take security more seriously)

17  Other / Obsolete (selling) / NYC: 15.4-inch, 2.2GHz MacBook Pro with 160gb HD and 4gb RAM on: June 06, 2011, 01:42:46 AM
Anyone in the NYC area interested in my mid-2007 MacBook Pro (Model: MA895LL)?

I've been the only owner, and laptop has been upgraded to 4gb of RAM and a 160gb HD. Comes with the AC adapter, non-OEM battery (OEM battery is included too, but does not hold much of a charge), and freshly installed Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

I'm looking for 40 BTC in exchange for my laptop. (subject to change with exchange rate) I'd also prefer to do the trade in person in Manhattan.

Thanks!
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do you trust the miners? on: June 05, 2011, 04:14:19 AM
Look, the people you are after are the people you depend on. We cook your meals, we haul your trash, we connect your calls, we drive your ambulances. We guard you while you sleep. Do not... fuck with us.

19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What happens when the Bitcoin prices are too high and more Miners come online? on: June 05, 2011, 04:12:56 AM
More miners does not mean more bitcoins it means the existing creation of bitcoins gets spread more finely across more people.

Exactly. The rate of bitcoin production is more or less constant.
20  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Risk in losing Bitcoin client / balances on: June 03, 2011, 04:35:56 PM
Yeah I get the whole private key and encryption principle. Basic cryptology. I never said anything about syncing those over the network.

So the client generates new private keys every once in a while, and that's the reason the backup can't be too old. Thanks for that info, perfectly clear to me now!

Thanks again!

The client only generates new private keys when you create a new receiving address. If you don't do that, the backup can be as old as you want, I believe.
