1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: i0coin UPDATES on: September 20, 2013, 07:14:34 PM
Hello all,

Since I'm behind the current I0coin resurrection, I'd like to claim all applicable bounties.

Here is a list of things I did to get the coin healthy again:
  • analyze the problem
  • implement a clean fix for the issue
  • provide windows binaries (on the new I0coin homepage / rebranded the QT client using Lightlord's logos)
  • provide DNSseed, since irc seed support is removed from bitcoin
  • initiated a hardfork, to fix a current hardfork-requiring issues, making the coin future proof
  • informed Vircurex of my progress, in an attempt to get the coin re-enabled, which they have done

I'd like to thank:
  • markm for joining the discussion at an early stage and keeping the coin alive (by running the only connectible node, AFAIK)
  • doublec, the previous i0coin maintainer, for supporting me as new maintainer and including the coin in his pool.
  • all miners that are sending more than 20 TH/s to the coin
  • all other people that have contributed in some way to the success of this resurrection

Scanning though this thread, I find the following offerings (my list differs from the list in the first post; please correct me if I have misinterpreted something):

Lightlord: I0C 20000 (paid!)

pyra-proxy: I0C 5000, I0C 5000 (vircurex bonus), I0C 10000 (merged mining)  (101% paid!)

steelhouse: I0C 5000 (110% paid!)

paladin_avatar16: I0C 20000 (merged mining), I0C 10000 (vircurex) (open)

ayayay: I0C 5000 (can't find a real source, this is just a quote) (open)

If you think I am eligible to receive a bounty you posted, please transfer the appropriate amount of coin to jR8YJ3XL7PdsodCZCYocu7iDgBEi5gD5vE and post the transaction ID below, so I can mark the amount as paid.

Greetings,

Rik.

Well, here I am - beeing out of the loop for a while ... And when I come back? I find i0coin fixed ...

Well bounty 1 + 2 + a "little" extra is on the way (c831b5a2ba243b9e7b5f59a2990226e66be647b3abb7e62abfc2615fd30646a4-000) ...

Hope you keep maintaining the coin ...

3  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [2000 GH/s] Bitparking Pool, PPS 2.5%,vardiff,stratum,Merge Mining BTC,NMC+more on: April 24, 2013, 06:18:39 AM
The pool had another 4x difficulty block, continuing its run of bad luck. Thankfully it was followed by a couple of short blocks putting us back to averaging 1.5x difficulty since the difficulty change. After seeing what's happened to Ozcoin, where a PPS bad luck run caused reserve issues and they had to disable PPS, I've re-enabled my DGM payment method testing code and am running that alongside PPS to test and compare results.

I may offer DGM alongside with PPS at some point, or leave it there to enable a switchover if PPS bad luck results in pool reserves getting dangerously low. I like PPS for its simplicity but I'd rather switch to DGM than go bankrupt if the reserves run low. Normally I'd just buy more reserves but the bitcoin price has risen so high since I started the pool that's not really an option when block swings can be 10,000 USD.

I hope I'm not alone with this - but I very much appreciate the work you're dooing with the pool! Especially since there IS a risk for you (yes - real money - and not "just" the risk of "complaining" users) you HAVE to make a profit from the poll. Not just for reserves - but also for your work and risk!

I would not mind a higher fee. Especially in a PPS pool!

PLEASE make a decent profit! You've earnd it!

Why not use latest bitcoin/namecoin/ixcoin client with modifications to i0coin sections.  Also, if we stop merged mining, maybe we could use latest bitcoin client.  Smoothie just wants to pump litecoin.  Unfortuantely that is how it is working in these alt-coins.  Let them fail on their own.  95% chance I have the 5000.  No exchange means no coin.  Maybe use PPcoin. solidcoin compressed the chain once. Maybe lengthen the block time. and adjust the frequency every block.  you would think empty blocks would be small.

Compressing the chain (solidcoin style) would be a nice addition to the update but not sure how it would be possible w/out creating essentially an I0Coin2, but maybe that will have to happen...  1 idea I had suggested which may avoid needing a "reboot" of the coin would be to create (for lack of a better term) a "dynamic genesis block" whereby every X blocks the history is rolled into a ledger record and then the chain past the ledger could be dropped as being tabulated into the ledgered "checkpoint"/"dynamic genesis block", in this method you could keep standard block hashing, but say every X blocks all the blocks Y in the past are tabulated into a new ledger so that the chain might look like this:

<ledger> - block X - block Y - block Z - block N (then when N hits the next reledgering point)
<new ledger = ledger + block N - reasonable block history to account for orphans/splits> - reasonable block history - New block X

In this method the chain size would dramatically fall to: ledger + X block history + current block ... even if X were 100 or 1000 it would represent a pretty significant drop in resource consumption which some simple analysis could prove even before making the code changes. At 1000 for a value of desired block history the largest the block chain record would be is: ledger + 1999 blocks because at block 2000 you'd create a new ledger and be back at: ledger + 1000 blocks.

regarding letting chains fail on their own:  Devcoin is very interested in solving this and the reason given why there is not a devcoin bounty share on it is that the market cap of devcoin alone is not sufficient to fund this work, BUT the quoted message below was submitted today regarding partial funding for projects which have sufficient funding from other sources, so if I0Coin + others get a reasonable bounty up then it looks like devcoin might also be capable of chipping in as well, of course this means the solution should be easily portable to other *coin chains.  It's certainly something to consider....

Both are too big for devcoin to fund right now.

However, if people are offering a sufficient bounty for people to get interested in a project, for example the 185+ BTC - Open Transactions Client (for Grandmas) project:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=105506.0

then I suggest that devcoin pile in with a bounty if the project is at least one quarter funded. In the project types section:
http://devtome.org/wiki/index.php?title=Devcoin_Bounty#Project_Types

it is assumed that the bounty offered would be up to 1% of the market capitalization. So the 1,000,000 USD required for modification to a big application works out to a 10,000 USD bounty, a quarter of which is 2,500 USD.

Should 8 shares be offered if the pledges go above 2,500 USD? Should the pledge target be different?

Actually, I'm going to up my share of the bounty.  On the following conditions:
1)  Vircurex reenables its support of the chain due to the solution - Then my minimum bounty will be 10,000 I0C
2)  If the solution still allows for merge mining (specifically at minimum on the bitparking pool) - Then I'll add an additional 10,000 I0C to the bounty
3)  If the solution can be and is ported to the following chains then further bounty additions from me will be:  (option 2 has to be met for option 3 to go into effect)
3a) DVC - 1,000,000 DVC bounty addition
3b) IXC - 4,000 IXC bounty addition
3c) NMC - 200 NMC bounty addition

Hope that by adding these and perhaps encouraging others that this is a serious concern for the longevity of cryptocurrencies the bounties and development efforts will be increased.

Aah! What the hell ...

I upp my bounty too:

1) I like merged mining - so let's keep it (additional 20,000) ...
2) And yes - an exchange makes sense too (vircurex or any other "significant" exchange - additional 10,000)

hope, that helps as motivation ...

If someone can address the memory problem in i0coin they said they would return
the exchange back.

Dear Lightlord,

we stopped the trading and support of I0C because of the huge memory requirement of the wallet. We are running our servers in a datacenter, a 2GB memory VPS costs you in the range of 30 USD to 50USD monthly.  And looking at the growth of the chain, we are anticipating a growth of 80MB per month, hence sometime end of next year the wallet will require 3GB of memory.    Unless the memory usage isn't addressed, I see no possibility of supporting the I0C chain.

Regards
Your Vircurex Team

Translation: "Please fix I0coin so vircurex will reopen I0coin trading so I can dump all my I0coins." Tongue

 Roll Eyes

Not the reason but -.-
Just sad to see i0coin a community worked currency died.

Btw the other alt-currencies that the creator started with some to pocket weren't legit mining,
I actually legit mined mine. And I haven't sold any of mine yet for a year,
even when an exchange was up and running, and at prices of 0.0005 and above.

I am going to open up a 10,000 i0coin BOUNTY,
To anyone that can fix this problem.

I second that

And just for the fun of it - I add 20,000 i0coin to the bounty ...

For anyone still using i0coin, the block where the subsidy halves has been reached again. It's now 12 i0coins/block.

I'm still with i0coin! Hope you don't let them die  Grin

Just stopped p2pmining.com i0coin merged mining.  We where contributing about 10 Gh/s.  I saw the DB error message in the getinfo message field.  Any reason compelling to start merge mining this coin again?

I fired up my 32509 client again. It is normally loading blocks (no errors from getinfo), difficulty 5000 (at around block 300000 we "only" hat around 6000) and 1 block nearly every minute. Something feels strange. If the pools are offline -who is hashing? ... and with at least equal power as before (diff rising, fast blocks ...)?

Has there been a chain fork? Vircurex shows the current block as 329,592. I did a full chain download using the i0coin.bitparking.com client and it has the block count as greater than 330,000. What client is vircurex running?

I use your 32509 client.
I started it about an hour ago - downloading blocks up to 330475.
Now -only about one hour later - and it's up to 330500 and counting (fast!)

Hope this helps and the whole situation gets cleared up - I kinda like i0coin!

Block count is now 330555. This makes 55 Blocks in this hour alone shown on my client. Hope this info helps anyhow ...

I am suprised ixcoin is still around. I have just under a thousand ixcoins. I can't even sell them

ixcoin and i0coin can be traded at https://vircurex.com/ . The price is also rissing (even exploding?  Grin -relatively speaking).
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New Ixcoin fork -> I0coin on: December 09, 2011, 08:38:59 AM
The idea itself might be good - but I think it looks way too overloaded ...
I'm more the "keep it simple" kind of guy ...

edit:

I didn't catch the second one (did you edit ?) - it looks way better (less crowded) than the first. If you go with rim letters, this design would be the keeper ...

... hm ... the more I look at it, the more I like it  Smiley

Cool design lightlord!

Thanks for the work!

That said - I like the first one best (uper left) and the second one (upper right) second best ...

As for the categories - it's a tie between 3 and 4 for me ...
14  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MY BITCOIN WALLET TAKING FOREVER TO LOAD??? on: December 07, 2011, 07:42:49 PM
Yea I wrote that a little bit confusing in my earlier post ...

You should also see the absolute blocknumber as a tooltip when moving your mouse over the symbol in the lower right corner of the client. This should give you a better idea as of where you are in the download process ...
15  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MY BITCOIN WALLET TAKING FOREVER TO LOAD??? on: December 07, 2011, 07:04:38 PM
Your client needs to catch up with the blockchain and load all the blocks in existence to your harddrive.

This means 156505 blocks or 768 MB data (see http://allchains.info/). This may take a while.

Every time you start your client after this, it will download all blocks, that were created since the last run.
While this is shorter, I experienced a "waiting time" of about 1 minute for every day of blocks created ...
16  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: GeForce GT 120 only giving around 5.5 Mhash/s on: December 06, 2011, 04:55:17 PM
probably nothing ...

have alook at this:

While I didn't find your card, it will give you a general idea what to expect ...
17  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How could it possibly fail or end? on: December 05, 2011, 04:56:30 PM
If the hashrate drops, then the system automatically reduces difficulty which will in turn mining more lucrative. That way, the hashrate will never drop doen to dangerous levels, but instead will regulate itself so that approx. 6 blocks per hour can be processed.

I have to diagree. Bitcoin is far from being safe from 51% attacks.

It all depends on demand - people willing to pay for bitcoins. If there are "to few" of them, the price will drop (simple market law).

Low price means people are leaving mining (and some of them bitcoin) and - yes - difficulty will drop, you will get more bitcoins and your total $ earnings may stay the same ...

BUT

people leaving the coin means less "players" and therefor less demand (less customers, less shops, less everyone). This CAN become a downward spiral of the price.

Don't fool yourself - if you look at the top miners in the pools you will see that, lets say, 100 GHash are already a danger zone for 51%-attacks. Of course bitcoins has 10 times the amount right now - but it had much more at one point.

Please remember - this is a WHAT IF, a WHAT COULD HAPPEN scenario. I hope this never to happen - but look at the alt-chains.
They are "what if" scenarios becoming reality.

18  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How could it possibly fail or end? on: December 05, 2011, 07:09:32 AM
There is an easy imaginable scenario for an bitcoin fail:

1. The hash rate drops to a point, where a 51%-attack is possible. This can be due to very low price and/or MtGox going offline (see MtGox-hack events earlier this year). What ever the reason - with a possible 51% attack bitcoin gets a problem ...

2. Businesses that ARE using bitcoins today get cold feet and bailing out - dropping price and hashrate even more.

3. IF an successfully attack takes place, most of the remaining businesses have to bail out -they can't take the risk. This would destroy the demand ...

4. A recovery from this loss of faith (security) would be difficult at best ...

If you want a better idea of possible fail scenarios, have a look at the alt-chains. None of them has actually failed - but more than one has been called a "zombie" ...
Dont't get me wrong - I like alt-chains (and mine them like hell with the i0coin- and iXcoin-resurrection), but they provide interesting "what-if" scenarios for failing of a chain ...
19  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Introduce yourself :) on: December 04, 2011, 02:05:00 PM
I'm into bitcoins for some time now and have done my fair share of mining (bitcoins and altcoins) and trading.

After several months reading (leeching) this forum, I think it makes sense to be actually able to reply to posts I'm reading  Smiley ...

In this spirit - 1 down, 4 to go

see you around
