1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin 0.9.0 FINAL is available [Changelog] [Download] on: March 20, 2014, 02:42:19 PM
Thanks for the heads up.

I'll hold back and await further developments.
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin 0.9.0 FINAL is available [Changelog] [Download] on: March 20, 2014, 02:30:59 PM
Dont download this, the receive bitcoin address list is missing. And you have to start over.

I was just about to do this upgrade, what exactly is the problem you're referring to?

Thanks Kouye

This has been a big help with my understanding as to what is going on "under the hood". When I encrypt a wallet, the warning message that comes up but doesn't help much, is a warning that old copies of the same wallet could be used to steal your coins. I don't understand how two wallets with the same public address can show different numbers of transactions but you can't argue with the Blockchain so just check the address in there.

I will permanently retire the incorrect wallet and put a password on the one that is showing the correct transactions.

Thanks for all your help

Further looking at these wallets, the only difference is that the one that is missing the 40mBTC transaction now has my password on it. The copy that has all the transactions including the 40mBTC transaction is older and does not have my password on it.

I assume that I can set the password on the correct older wallet and then delete the wallet that does not show the 40mBTC transaction. Am I right in assuming that passwords exist solely in the wallet.dat file so older, unlocked copies of the same wallet can be used to send coins without entering the password?

That Kouye has opened a whole new window on the Bitcoin world for me, I just tested those commands on the wallet open on this PC and can see what you mean. This is my Windows PC so this wallet contains very little, as the wallet I'm talking about has a lot in it I only load it on my Linux Laptop when its offline and take a peek. I will do this tomorrow. I think you have given me enough information to help find the cause but its not sure because the 40mBTC transaction is actually missing. I really didn't know that command window existed and I will enjoy exploring that.

KieranJones1, I don't quite understand your reply as this is a Bitcoin-Qt wallet. In this case I only used Blockchain.info to check the address concerned  to find all the transactions going to my address. Six transactions exist on the Blockchain, only five transactions exist on one of the wallets, six on the other.

Thanks Y'All
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet Mystery on: November 29, 2013, 07:44:23 PM
Thanks very much to you both for your support.

Rarkenin, The Blockchain on my PC is up to date and both copies of the wallet are fully in sync with it. I swap the wallets in the .bitcoin folder, one includes the 40mBTC transaction and the other does not. The missing transaction is in the middle as there are older and newer transactions.

Kouye, Just discarding the wallet that is missing the 40mBTC transaction may solve the problem but not the Mystery.
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Wallet Mystery on: November 29, 2013, 04:53:43 PM
Hi.
I have two copies of the same Bitcoin-QT wallet that show a different BTC balance!

These wallets have the same public address but one of them is missing a single 40mBTC receipt. When I put this address into BlockchainINFO, it shows all the six transactions including the missing 40mBTC deposit. I've tried doing a -rescan on the wallet missing the transaction but it didn't help.

How can this be and how do I rectify it?

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.
Thanks

rocksalt, you are joking I hope. As soon as you do your step 2, ten of your Windows viruses will be sending copies of your wallet to their hacker owners.

As for SD cards and CPRM! What the hell is a Windows 7 phone? it sounds like they should be strangled at birth.
10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Trojan Wallet stealer be careful on: June 20, 2011, 02:05:17 PM
You could use a 2GB SD card with a USB adapter for this because its cheap and has the added advantage of a write protect switch.

There is no reason I can think of that one SD card can't be used with multiple wallet.dat files and you should be able to copy one SD card to another for backup purposes.

SD cards are not a secure floppy replacement: They include CPRM with device revocation. The "Secure" in "Secure digital" means "Secure from the user," not "Securely holds your data."

I Have already said in my first post, computers are too insecure to handle a crypto-currency in the near term.

Yes, the write protection switch may help you avoid accidentally deleting your keys. Also blocking some virus from getting onto the SD card. A write protected USB is hardware protected, but harder to find.

I would like to give a +1 to the USB key approach already suggested in a couple of the prior posts.

Whenever a new wallet.dat is created the client forces the creation of a USB key that must be plugged in whenever bitcoins are to be sent to another wallet.

You could use a 2GB SD card with a USB adapter for this because its cheap and has the added advantage of a write protect switch.

To SEND any coins you have to enter your password AND plug the SD card into a USB port.

Bitcoin is a project in Beta, exactly the reason to test the system in the real world and arrive at the best possible solution. It is slightly in danger of falling victim to its own success.

I have only just started using this RC but so far it appears to run fine including the GUI, in my bog standard Unity desktop on Ubuntu Natty 11.04 64bit version.

I'm happy.  Grin
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Currency Fair on: May 14, 2011, 09:58:20 PM
I used http://www.ukforex.co.uk - they offer minimally better rate now, but charge about 7GBP for the transfer it it is less then 3000GBP.

Well that seems promising to. Ideally one of these companies would take Bitcoin as one of its traded currencies but the Bitcoin seller sending direct to the buyer.

Did CurrencyFair ever respond I wonder? I have spoken to their IT Director in the past, perhaps I should ring him back and ask him.

... there's the rub. You got Big Brother's money and then you got bitcoin. .... BB's money costs too much.

CurrencyFair is a perfectly legit method of converting and moving cash between any major currencies/countries, so what’s the problem assuming the cash is not from illegal sources?
15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Currency Fair on: May 14, 2011, 09:11:37 PM
Resurrecting this old thread because it has some potential. I use CurrencyFair to change money from GBP to Euros and can vouch that the service and system is excellent.

In my case I linked my UK bank account and my Euro bank account but I can add others like a USD account. I deposit GBP, offer for exchange to Euros and when that’s done the money sits in my account as Euros. When I ask for it to be sent to my Euro bank account it costs 3Euros charges for any amount and arrives in a couple of days.

Maybe if I added an MT Gox bank account number the money would go straight to them in USD.

It's not like they started arresting people who tried to use liberty dollars. They only arrested the founder.

So that's why Satoshi can't be found.

Wow! perhaps Satoshi was really Bin Laden.

19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Can my Bitcoins be stolen? on: March 03, 2011, 10:27:27 PM
This was assuming you're holding onto the wallet.dat as a long term value storage option - print out the wallet, mark down the addresses, and delete the original file. Then store someplace safe Smiley Easy to deposit coins to the wallet, but hard to withdraw.

Or, for that matter, burn the thing onto a CD, place the disk in a safety deposit box, and delete the original.

If there's enough demand, a 2-d barcode format suitable for printing a wallet and rapidly scanning it back in can and will be developed. That way, you can have the relative permanence of paper, and the ease of digital data.

Are we re-inventing the banknote here?  Undecided

Agreed, I am so convinced of Bitcoins potential that I want to see it develop into the best possible payment system. No excuses by saying the competition can't do that either!

Well, what you waiting for?

Get coding!

If I coded so much as a comma in the Bitcoin Client, the whole system would crash and fall apart. Coding is just one of the millions of things I can't do.  Sad
I could print fiat currency though - any dummy can do that.
