1  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER GPU FPGA overclock monitor fanspeed GCN RPC linux/windows/osx 2.3.1 on: March 06, 2012, 12:22:09 AM
Not sure if this has been covered in previous posts, but MAN, 227 pages of posts to read, and searches don't turn up anything, so what the hey.

Just went from 2.2.6 to 2.3.1 and went from mid 500s on each 7970 and dropped to... 25.

At first I assumed it was to do with the new GPU interval setting it was annoying me about, but after wasting an hour playing with that to no avail I started looking for other causes. The first thing I noticed was it seemed to be taking 99% of each GPU to turn up 25 Mhash/sec. I tried phatk and went to 150 per GPU. POCLBM came in first with 552 at 12 intensity (I don't want the fans offensively loud).

So, not sure what's changed. I have not tried other kernels in the past so I can't tell if phatk has always sucked or, like Diablo, has just started sucking.

Anyway, I hope this helps anyone else with a 7970 confused by a sudden performance hit after an update!

Many thanks to ck the hard work and everyone else who donated!

I just changed over to 2.2.3 on my windows machine with two shiny new Sapphire 7970s and am getting 513 and 537 at stock stock speeds (running at a leisurely 78 degrees), a huge jump over 2.2.1.

Many thanks!

Excellent. Don't forget to use intensity 11 if you can.

I use dynamic on my main card and have been using 14 on the second as it's a Crossfire only card (I haven't progressed to the whole eyefinity 2 x 6 thang yet Tongue). I've changed to 11 and it seems to have basically the same rate. Coolness!

Likely CAD stations are running nVidia hardware, which won't make you much. Make sure to do the calculations to determine whether you will actually make more in BTC than you would selling the extra power to the grid.

I do have some mining experience and am aware of the deficiency in mining in nVidia. All the cards are ATIs.

Don't forget to include mining-caused hardware MTBF reduction into your profitability calculations.

Good point, have now done so!

have you verified with a sensor like gpu-z that your card is actually running at 150?

when i do that with my 6970, it defaults back to stock settings.

I just downloaded GPU-z and confirmed the underclock.

Try the latest catalyst driver? I am running 7970s, FYI.

I just sent 5 BTC.

Let's help make cgminer even better!

is it possible to underclock the memory down to 300 using cgminer?

I clock my 7970s down to 150 with it quite successfully.

how?

GPU Settings -> Change Settings -> Select GPU -> Memory

From there you can set the memory speed.

You can also use the "gpu-memclock" config stanza in your .conf file.

I usually get a miner running how I like and then just write out the config file (Settings -> Write Config File).

Hello to the cgminer community.

I have been trying to implement a background mining setup here at my work (with the consent and support of my boss). I have 20 CAD stations I want to run miners on, but only when the machines are idle (the engineers never shut them off and we source all our power from solar panels on the roof).

I have tried various options, from the old RCP screen savers (sooooooo out of date) to commandsaver. Commandsaver was close, but cgminer doesn't seem to like console redirection, plus when the screensaver ends and goes to shut down cgminer it rarely seems to exit cleanly.

People directed me to this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/?topic=8403.0, but I can't see how it's any better than command saver and still probably has the clean exiting issue.

Any ideas? cgminer is my preference (it's awesomely efficient and only needs one worker account per machine). Maybe if enough of us annoy con he'll fix the console redirection and clean shutdown issues?

10  Bitcoin / Mining / Screensaver mining on: February 03, 2012, 01:29:36 AM
Hi all!

My boss and I were chatting about BTC and mining (we use solar power so the extra power isn't of concern to my boss as the grid pays us a pittance for our overproduction), and we are interested in giving it a go on the CAD stations we have here, but we only want  to use idle time.

I tried out the puddinpop RPC screensavers, but they are over a year old and just crash when trying to submit work. cgminer and commandsaver half works, but cgminer doesn't handle console redirection well at all and rarely exits cleanly.

Any other suggestions? If I wanted to offer a bounty on developing a solution, what's a reasonable offer? Anyone else looking for a screensaver miner who'd be willing to chip in?

Based on those numbers I would say buy but you should be able to build a more efficient rig (MH/$).

I agree: you can do better in the efficiency stakes.
12  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How did you guys get into bitcoin? on: February 03, 2012, 01:14:42 AM
My first reaction: SCAM! I thought is was a BotNet recruitment program or just some waste of time.

Did a lot of research before getting started and now I mine 2 Ghash/sec 24/7.
13  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hacking, the FBI and SolidCoin on: February 03, 2012, 01:11:25 AM
Well, it seems the opinion so far is "SCAM" in regards to SolidCoin. That was my first instinct, so it looks like I was on the money there.

What about the FBI/CIA claims? Is that just FUD? Here's a link to an article http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=gavin%20andreson&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CDUQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fcoinbits.com%2Fgavin-andreson-tech-lead-for-bitcoin-will-meet-the-cia-1107%2F&ei=YS4rT_W1EoLlrAf735HNDA&usg=AFQjCNFKWYED-7yslxOF94G0SXOHf5f8Vg&sig2=gsOxPErhfeEE4J_VqujJMg&cad=rja

And the Bank of America stuff? Solidcoin link to this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ljx4bbJrYE and then quote Andreson here: http://solidcoin.info/solidcoin-ready-for-bitcoin-collapse.php. I have been trying to watch it this morning but I'm on the road and my internet access is slowwwwwwww.

I can see that it could be FUD. SolidCoin could be quoting out of context; in fact that seems like the most likely option. But there is a kernel of truth: governments and traditional members of the financial establishment will be (or already are) threatened by BitCoin, either because they see it as a treat to their business model, power, or just out of fear of the new. Some members of the establishment, like the FBI, are already taking an active role in interfearing with the development of new currencies: http://www.libertariannews.org/2011/08/30/bitcoin-fbi-admits-to-engaging-in-infiltration-disruption-and-dismantling-of-competing-currencies/; so how could they be negotiating with Andreson in good faith?

I would hate to see BitCoin rot from the inside out.
14  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: My initial Radeon HD 7970 mining benchmarks on: February 02, 2012, 11:14:17 PM
Anyone know how to get the memory clock on the 7970 lower? If I lower it more than 950 mhz, it jumps up to stock speeds. I can't control the voltage in afterburner, and Trixx won't let me lower it, only raise it.

Version 2.2.1 of cgminer controls the memory clock speeds just fine: I run my clocks at 150, something Catalyst Control OD confirms. I have found the best results with my two 7970s on cgminer, getting 449 (intensity 6) and 480 (intensity 14) on the two, respectively.

And they're great for gaming. Viva la ATI!

I like the idea of BitCoin. I've liked it since the day I first started researching it, though I started off with the mind set that it was likely a scam, but it became rapidly obvious that it was an actual attempt to make a useful, open source, decentralised online currency. One I immediately recocnised as geo-politically independent and a real solution to some of today's most gruesome ills. So I put on my miner's hat and got to work.

I have been watching the rise of Litecoin and Solidcoin with some trepidation: so many good projects have been destroyed by forking source code and a divided community. At the same time, Solidcoin make some VERY strong suggestions and accusations about recent changes in the BitCoin team, even to the point of accusing Gavin Andreson of supporting efforts for the Banks to take over the operation of BitCoin and of colluding with the FBI and CIA to undermine the privacy of the system. They also accuse the development team in general of allowing the code to stagnate, something I have to agree with as it seems the protocol isn't been evolved to keep up with the needs of the network (the focus seems to be on developing the API for e-commerce), especially in regards to security, though I am no code monkey so I could be wrong.

So, my question is this: what does everyone think? Are SolidCoin just a bunch of dirty splitters or are their concerns legitimate? Is solidCoin the scam I though BitCoin was? And WTF is LiteCoin and why do we need it when the main currency has mBTC and uBTC?

Thoughts?

16  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 102.5 MHash/s - mining worthwhile? on: February 02, 2012, 11:06:17 PM
Depends on the power draw and how much you pay for electricity. If it's a Nvidia card, I can answer pretty quickly: no.

Going to be a very low payout, right now. Truth is, while the value of BitCoin is so low if you're paying for power it's very hard to make a good income.

Two things I can recommend:

1) I built a small solar farm to power my two miners (the solar panels cost more than the miners themselves, but here is Australia electricity is actually a bigger cost than the actual hardware). That brings the break even point back by about 6 months

2) Look into time based metering of power. Some electricity providers will install a smart meter which then records how much power is used when and gives you a much cheaper rate between say midnight and 6 am, sometimes a tenth the rate. Mine then!

My instinct, though, is that 100 Mhash is going to earn about 1 bitcoin every, what, 4-6 days? The return is almost negligable unless there is something specific you want to buy with BTC, at which point mining is cheaper than buying BTC every day of the week.

Hope that helps!

Hey I'm new here, just came to check things out. I've been doing a bit of work with bitcoins over the past few months and things are really good. It seems like the "gold standard" except online. Anyway, great to be here!

Yeah, isn't amazing that BitCoin is actually 'backed' by something (the work to produce each block) but the US$ is "Trust us that it has a value". lol, who trust their government any more? What a quaint idea!

Hi,

I'd like out of newbie status! I've been mining for 6 months now and have just bought a pair of 7970s so I can help Con with cgminer testing and would like to be able to post in the cgminer thread.

Regards,

What newbies and other adventurers using for mining in here?

I've played with just Guiminer and BAMT myself. What else is out there?

I like BAMT best as you can modify the core, memory and fan speeds by making a change in a config file.
Nothing t0o fancy till you play around with other switches/features.

That is my thought on it.

CGMINER.

I can't recommend it highly enough. It's easy, efficient and under constant development. It also does engine, memory and fan speed management, and a wealth of other useful settings.

Best of all, the dev is active on this board, at this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0
20  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is there really no quick way to buy BTC with a credit card? on: February 02, 2012, 09:08:28 AM

Is there really no quick way to buy BTC with a credit card?

Could they just use anti-fraud strategies that many online retailers use?

many keep popping up but they charge an arm and leg for you to do it because you can just cancel the transaction after the bitcoins are sent.

So that's why.........

It's the main flaw with BitCoin for online transactions: you pay it, it's gone. Great for retailers, but users are a little wary. It's why escrow services will be so important to BitCoin's future, I guess.
