1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Creating my own altcoin? on: July 07, 2017, 09:36:38 AM
Can I copy a existing coins source code, edit it a bit, create a whitepaper and launch a ICO for my coin to collect essential funds for creating the phone app, wallet, marketing, etc.

I can't say I know a lot about it but since bitcoin is open source you definitely can do this and most of the original altcoins like litecoin, feathercoin, dogecoin and many others were like this. They were basically copies of bitcoin with slight modifications.

Exactly my plan. Only thing I want to change with the coin is the mining interface and mining speed. Have you heard of any coins that can be mined on your phone or something like that?

All coins can theoretically be mined on your phone... As long as the diff is really, really, really, really low.
When you use a hashing algorithm for which an ASIC exists, like sha256d, scrypt, x11,... the diff will skyrocket because of people trying to insta-mine your new coin, so it will be impossible to mine on a phone.

You should try to find an algo that can only be mined using a CPU, you might have a shot at mining with your phone then. Or even better, create your own algo.

That being said: mining on your phone is allmost never a good idear for any of the existing algorithms...
Alright this is solid advice. Since I am not really good with algos. What would you think of a pre-mined coin that will be distributed for using the app for “x amount of minutes a day”

That wouldn't technically be mining on your smartphone, but it would still work tough... There used to be an altcoin "mangocoinz" (IIRC) that used this concept.

Theoretically, it's easy to achieve this by adding a (very) generous block reward to one of the first blocks, then mine those first blocks yourself (as the dev)

Okay, great to hear that I am not the only one coming up with this idea. Would it be smarter to fork from BTC or find Mangocoinz source code and fork from them?

I don't think mangocoinz ever distributed it's code... Here's ther ann thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=902788.0

5  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Xapo starting to charge outgoing transaction fees on: May 17, 2017, 06:16:56 AM
This is an email that I received from Xapo saying that from the next couple of days I cannot send transactions without any fee...

Do you agree with their decision? I personally believe that a big part of their business was from people wanting to do a lot of micropayments, because coinbase, coinjar and other online wallet giants have added fees and they were the only ones left yet to add a fee. But obviously that probably hurt them a lot and set them back on a lot of extra income as transaction fees skyrockets.

Your thoughts?

It's just a business decission. Miner's fees have always existed, but xapo was so kind to pay the fee for their users. They probably did the math, and found out the could maximise their profit by no longer paying the fees for their users. Sure, they'll lose business, but i'm pretty sure they would have done sufficient calculations to know their net income will rise with this decission.

Like you said, since the mempool is so full lately, fees have skyrocketed, so i suppose it's costing them to much money in the end.
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What if, we advertise bitcoin on T.V.? on: May 05, 2017, 07:45:37 AM
I've just thought about this for a moment but, if we want bitcoin to get more popularity, attention or acceptance would it be nice to make some advertisement about it on T.V.? I don't if know if in other countries they advertise bitcoin but in my country, I haven't seen one. How do you think advertising bitcoin will affect the people? Any thoughts?

I guess the main problem is that bitcoin is open-source, community driven... Altough there are some bigger players on the market.
I think this would make it incredibly difficult to get a concensus on which add would be shown, as well as finding sponsors to foot the bill. TV ads aren't cheap Wink

But yes, IF there would ever be a concensus about showing a TV ad, and we would find somebody footing the bill, i think it would give BTC and incredible boost. In my country, most people still think bitcoin is only used by criminals, they always give me a strange look when i tell them i have some btc to.
7  Economy / Speculation / Re: World War III on: April 25, 2017, 05:44:37 AM
It's an interesting question tbh... Bitcoin isn't really linked to USD, it's an open market. You can use RUR or EUR (and probably other currencies too) to buy BTC directly.
That being said, i think a war could never be good for a currency, however, since BTC would be one of the only globally accepted currencies, i don't think the price would drop... But that's just my gut feeling, i don't have a degree in economics, nor did i took the time to investigate what other currency prices did during previous wars.

9  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: can I make 100$ in 2-3 month without a base money? on: March 14, 2017, 02:57:01 PM
If I have 0$ at the moment can I make 100$ in 2 or 3 months? How?
What if I deposited 20$ .. Can I make them 100$ in less time?

It possible even you dont have money you can earn that $100 in no time if you have skills regarding developing, technical, programming, designing skills you would able to generate that money by finding jobs on this forum but if you dont have skills then it would be hard. Using $20 doesnt guarantee to make you $100,if you could able to risk that on playing gambling then its your choice.
I am able to design and have technical skills

In that case: open a thread, add your portfolio, your prices and which escrow providers you're willing to work with.
Then actively search for work, on bitcointalk and other places, refer them to your thread for pricing and/or a look at your portfolio.

If you find a couple good gigs, you can make $100 in a couple of days.

Good luck!
Couple days!? 100$ ? Which section? And why not.investing? Or.gambling?

I was AFK for a while, and i see this question was more or less answered... I just wanted to give some extra explanation:
I've seen people asking anywhere between $5 and $50/hour for technical work, same goes for designing (altough you'd have to be a pretty good designer to charge $50/hour). So basically, if you showcase your portfolio and it's good, and you invest some time into finding jobs on this forum and other online places, and even run some promo's, it shouldn't take you more than 10-15 hours of actual work to make $100.

Personally, i don't like investing or gambling... Sure, you can win, but you can fall victims to scams (investing) or the house edge (gambling). Selling your skills is the sure way to make BTC (imho) Wink

11  Economy / Speculation / Re: 1 Bitcoin (2000-3000$) Worths 1 Carat Diamond - Why To Not Sell Bitcoins? on: February 24, 2017, 06:46:53 AM
I'm a bit confused as to what your first sentence has to do with the second one...

1 Bitcoin worth is 2000-3000$ like 1 carat diamond.
at the moment, 1 BTC = $1206, i don't know the diamond prices tough, but a bitcoin is certainly not worth $2k-$3k at the time of writing.

I created this thread to ask why it's better to not sell your Bitcoins?
personally, i hold my coins in the hope the price will rise in the future.

13  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Not showing in wallet after 3 hours: 0.00019824 BTC Fee, 31 confirmations on web on: January 19, 2017, 01:44:04 PM
Well when I go to the dashboard, it says "Armory is online!", so going by this I guess it's synced.
Down the bottom it says "Connected (448615 blocks)".

This is the only wallet I've got.. so I guess that's a yes??

The current block height is 448955 (at the time of writing)... I guess you'll need to sync another 340 blocks....
14  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Not showing in wallet after 3 hours: 0.00019824 BTC Fee, 31 confirmations on web on: January 19, 2017, 01:22:28 PM
Hi there

It's been 2 hours and 56 mins since I sent some BTC to my wallet.
It included a 0.00019824 BTC fee.
Blockexplorer.com says it's had 33 confirmations, but it's still not showing up on my wallet.

I'm using a restored wallet on the latest version of Armory, and this is the first transaction I've done with it since it's been restored.

Don't know why it's taking so long - like why does Blockexplorer.com say 33 confirmations but it's not being listed on my Armory wallet?

Cheers

Is your wallet synced? Judging by your post, i think the most obvious explanation is that it's still syncing the blockchain, so you'll have to wait.

If it's fully synced, are you sure you restored the correct wallet?
15  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining Newbie on: January 09, 2017, 02:50:08 PM
Hi guys i am new to bitcoin mining. Although i have been doing lots of research on mining. But something is still not clear to me. I wish to join a pool. and my question is this. Do i need to get  mining hardware other than my PC to join a mining pool? Also i want to mine for profit and my electricity is 24c/kWH. would like to know how profitable this can be. Thank you guys

I currently pay around 17 cents/Kwu, and there is no way of mining profitably for me, so i don't see any option to mine BTC when you pay 7 cents/Kwu more than i do...

When talking about BTC (you're in the BTC mining subforum):
- CPU mining has been obsolete for years
- GPU mining has been obsolete for years
- ASIC mining using older ASIC's has been obsolete for months

The only thing that can actually make you any profit, is paying under 7-8 cents/Kwu, using an antminer S7, S9 or avalon 6 (or the new avalon miner whose name i cannot remember) while paying very little for this miner, transport, taxes, psu's, controllers, cables, shelves,...
16  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum and strict DER sig checking (to big S-Value) on: December 19, 2016, 09:03:43 AM
this can be closed. After several backups and restores, it is quite likely, that a mismatch of versions has happened. I had a deeper look and found some files with versions pre-2.5.  Huh Angry
Meanwhile I updated to 2.7, and all works as expected. No more issues with "too high S-Value.".

Luckily you found the error Smiley

20  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to become famous in this forum on: October 14, 2016, 07:27:27 AM
I've noticed there is a thirth path: i've seen some members becoming really popular just by pointing out the obvious and attacking other people for the smallest mistakes.
This is a rather easy path, since it requires little or no knowledge... Just find a target subforum, and paint everybody red that makes a certain mistake.

Don't get me wrong, this path is usefull... A lot of people that got famous this way are actually doing the community a favor by pointing out scammers, asking for signed messages, tagging ponzi's, quoting addresses,...
Taking this path also doesn't mean the person is not knowledgeable, just that his path to fame didn't take a lot of knowledge to follow
