1  Other / Beginners & Help / What stops people creating the same bitcoin address? on: October 07, 2015, 05:01:25 AM
I see many products that create wallets with new addresses.  But what is to stop some of those addresses from being the same? Could an address that matches one already in service be created?
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do hardware wallets like Trezor create 100 addresses? on: October 07, 2015, 04:57:21 AM
I think, it's for the secure of your wallet.
Cos, if you just have 1 address and you store all of your Bitcoin in it. When someone hack your account, boom|You lose all of your Bitcoin.
But if you store the Bitcoin to every different address, then if someone hack 1 address you'll just lose small amount of the Bitcoin.

How could a person "hack my account".  If they did that would they not have access to all 100 addresses?

So people can't track you.

Also, it stops thieves that can try to brute force the address.

If you have 50 BTC it is better to have it in 100 addresses instead of 1 address, because if you loose that 1 address, your btc is gone. If you loose 1 address on trezor, only 1/100th of your btc is gone. What sounds better to you?

Can you explain how I could lose an address? Is that possible?
4  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How can I go about choosing a software wallet when there appear to be so many? on: October 07, 2015, 04:52:12 AM
Choose one wallet and stick to it except if a change that you don't like appears.
Bitcoin core- For developers and people who care about security as bitcoin core verifies the entire block. It does take more space though.
SPV clients (MultiBit/Electrum)- For normal users, SPV client is usually enough and is ideal for people with smallish storage space. The security is not to the standards of Bitcoin core though.

What do you mean "The security is not to the standards of Bitcoin core though." ?

I would like to store some bitcoins on a software wallet.  But it seems like there are quite a few of these and new ones coming up all of the time.

For a newcomer like me can someone suggest which are the most popular?
You don't need to search anymore, bitcoin core today is fast enough to use for day to day use.
Before only multibit, but now multibit is stealing your funds each transaction :/

Does the bitcoin core wallet not require you to download the blockchain?  How does it compare with other wallets for features?

I hope Electrum will push their security to new levels, i plan to store tons of bitcoins will them in the future.

I hate to keep blockchain on my pc, its just a waste of space for my small pc.

What is the security problem you have with Electrum?  How about other wallets, do you feel others offer better security / features?
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Why do hardware wallets like Trezor create 100 addresses? on: October 06, 2015, 12:38:58 PM
If I understand it correctly the Trezor wallet creates 100 address and provides seed words to recreate these later if the device stops working.

But when I create a paper wallet then just one address is created.

What's the advantage of creating a large number of addresses and why do hardware wallets like Trezor create so many?
8  Economy / Exchanges / Bitstamp vs Coinbase on: October 06, 2015, 12:12:59 PM
Can anyone comment on the differences between these two exchanges?

I'd like to get some ideas from people who have used them recently.  For example which one is the bigger of the two, do they both have the same charges and does one have any advantage over the other?
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do I need a wallet on my computer if I have a Trezor or Keep Key ? on: October 05, 2015, 09:26:43 AM
I use the Trezor for online buying on different platforms, but I still have online accounts to diversify a bit and to use different wallets for different projects or experiments. You do not want to have one device to

link all your online activities, because it increase the risk for hacking. I know it's not a fool proof method, but it's working sofar.

I use the Trezor for more secure transactions in higher amounts, but I always keep the main stash in cold storage not linked to it at all.  Wink

I'm not asking you to share your personal details but what would you suggest I use for cold storage.  One problem I have is that I have no access to a safe deposit box so it would be difficult for me to use a paper wallet. I saw Xapo and was wondering about using that service.

10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Do I need a wallet on my computer if I have a Trezor or Keep Key ? on: October 04, 2015, 11:35:02 PM
I'm trying to understand how these work.  From what I understand so far the Trezor or KeepKey contain a "private key" that's used to sign a transaction.

I watched a couple of videos but most just show how the devices operate and don't give a high level view of what each actually does.

Can someone explain to me how this works in a few more words.  Does the Trezor or KeepKey generate a wallet address for example.  Also I understand if I lose either then I can restore if I know a set of words.  But how does that actually work?

11  Economy / Web Wallets / Have you used the blockchain wallet and did it meet your needs? on: October 02, 2015, 06:03:32 AM
I would like to have a wallet on my mobile to hold a small amount of bitcoin.  One that I was considering was the blockchain wallet which I believe is both a web and mobile wallet. Has anyone used this and would the recommend it?  I'm also interested to hear if anyone considers other wallets to be better or have more security. Thanks

14  Economy / Economics / What's pushing up the price today ( Sept 24th ) on: September 25, 2015, 11:19:45 AM
I've been watching the price go up steadily the last 24 hours. Anyone have any idea what's behind this price move?
15  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Is anybody storing their btc on Xapo or in Coinbase vaults ? on: September 25, 2015, 08:27:39 AM
It was my understanding that both coinbase and xapo had insurance up to a certain amount but I need to recheck.
16  Economy / Web Wallets / Is anybody storing their btc on Xapo or in Coinbase vaults ? on: September 25, 2015, 05:44:50 AM
I recently asked where people were storing their bitcoins. Most of the replies were cold storage but from what I see that meant offline, on an offline PC, paper wallet etc.

Is anyone out there using any of - Coinbase vaults or Xapo for offline storage?  How about other options that don't require paper or offline PCs etc?

17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where do you store your bitcoins ? on: September 24, 2015, 12:15:27 PM
I've seen a few mentions of "cold storage".

I'd appreciate hearing how and where?

Thanks

19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Where do you store your bitcoins ? on: September 24, 2015, 11:33:26 AM
Any suggestions on where a person who has already purchased bitcoins through Coinbase / circle should store them? I'm open to any suggestions from members. Thanks

I just posted a question about Gemini on another thread.  I guess we were both wondering the same thing and composing at the same time.
