Even though the risk is just $20, it sucks theres no form of security if the balance will still be good to use.

Well one way (if it's a person doing the escrow) would be for me to send them the card so they can check the balance, and if it comes out to the right amount (which it will), then both myself and the escrower know that the card is good; and the buyer can have confidence in purchasing.
