I believe the database system has changed.  I just ran 0.8 with the original files in place, and it imported from old to create new in the same directory.

Basically owning is the ability to transfer value from an address.  So if you buy some coin at mtgox, you can the transfer out to a blockchain.info wallet, or local client or whatever.  Moving bitcoin funds around is easy, usually free and quick.

You'll have trouble buying with paypal/credit card as they're reversible and bitcoin aren't.

ING direct in Australia does near instant transfers between members.

I believe the number or preceeding 0s is set according to the required difficulty to achieve a roughly 10 minute interval.

In terms of salt, it's a bit like hashing the transaction data with millions of different salts until you achieve an output with n preceeding 0s.
